'War criminal' Karadzic arrested

Karadzic had evaded capture for more than a decade [AFP]

Radovan Karadzic, the former Bosnian Serb leader and one of the world's most wanted men, has been captured by Serbian security services.

The office of Boris Tadic, the Serbian president, said on Monday that Karadzic had been "located and arrested".

A statement said that he had been taken to a war crimes court in Belgrade, the Serbian capital.

Police officials said he was arrested in a Belgrade suburb late on Monday after weeks of surveillance of a safe house.

Karadzic is accused of organising the 1995 massacre of more than 7,500 Muslims in Srebrenica and other atrocities in the Bosnian war.

The UN tribunal for the former Yugoslavia confirmed his arrest.

Olga Kravan, of the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia, told Al Jazeera that Karadzic's initial appearance in front of the judges should occur in the "near future".

He will have to answer to all the charges against him, "including genocide, complicity in genocide, exterminations, murders, and many other crimes", she said.

Most-wanted

Karadzic was indicted on genocide charges in 1995 by the UN tribunal, and he topped its most-wanted list for more than a decade.

He was arrested on a public bus around 9:30am on Friday and held until he was brought to the court on Monday, Sveta Vujacic, his lawyer, said.

"[Karadzic] just said that these people showed him a police badge and then he was taken to some place and kept in the room. And that is absolutely against the law what they did," Vujacic said.

One of the world's most-wanted war crimes fugitives.

Came to power in Bosnia's first democratic elections in 1990.

Accused of masterminding a number of atrocities in Bosian war, including the massacre of 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica in 1995.

Also accused of organising four year siege of Sarajevo where thousands were killed and brutal ethnic cleansing campaign.

Indicted twice by the UN war crimes tribunal but evaded arrest for 13 years, often reportedly by using elaborate disguises.

US offered a $5m reward for information leading to his capture.

"The judge also said that he will look into this matter, who and why kept him for three days."

Haris Silajdzic, a member of the Bosnian presidency, welcomed the news of Karadzic's arrest.

"This is a big day for international justice," he told Al Jazeera. "It will provide a big relief to the victims".

Silajdzic urged that those killed and exiled by Karadzic be remembered.

In order for "justice to be complete, we must erase the consequences of this genocide in Bosnia", he said.

Serbia has been under heavy pressure from the European Union (EU) to turn over those suspected of involvment in war crimes commited during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war to the UN tribunal in The Hague.

The arrest of Karadzic and other suspected war criminals, is one of the main conditions of Serbian progress towards EU membership.

Javier Solana, the EU's foreign policy chief, described Karadzic's capture as "excellent news."

"The place where Radovan Karadzic belongs is in front of the tribunal in The Hague, having a fair trial and responding to the crimes of which he is accused."

Karadzic is still seen by some fervent Serbian nationalists as a hero following the collapse of Yugoslavia.

Heavily armed Serbian security forces were deployed around the war-crimes court in Belgrade where Karadzic was taken and dozens of Karadzic supporters were reportedly seen gathering near the building chanting "Karadzic Hero!" and "Tadic Traitor!"

Several were arrested after attacking reporters.

Officers were also deployed outside the US embassy which was the target of nationalist protesters after Kosovo declared independence earlier this year.

Transfer expected

Aljosa Milenkovic, reporting for Al Jazeera from Serbia, said Karadzic was captured by Serbian special forces inside Serbian territory.

"It's interesting that he has been captured under the new government ... during the previous three or four years the Serbian government said he [Karadzic] was not hiding in Serbia," Milenkovic said.

He said that Karadzic would be questioned by a special court in Serbia and then sent to The Hague.

"We will probably see Mr Karadzic, within seven days, in The Hague tribunal," he said.

Ratko Mladic, his military leader during the Balkans war from 1992 to 1995, is still at large.

Karadzic would be the 44th Serb suspect extradited to the tribunal in The Hague.

The others include former Slobodan Milosevic, the former Serbian president, who was removed from power in 2000 and died in jail in 2006 while on trial on war crimes charges.

Edward Joseph, a Balkans analyst, told Al Jazeera that following Karadzic's arrest, the capture of Mladic - whom he labelled a "major figure" in the war crimes of the 1990s - would be "significant".

current war criminals
It's nice past war criminals are finally being brought to justice, but meanwhile, the outrageous war criminals currently heading the US government are reeking havoc in the world. The Germans weren't the ones to stop Hitler, and Americans won't put a stop to the Bush Gang. Won't some moral country come forward and prosecute the Washington criminals engaging in torture and preemptive war?

Radovan Karadzic war criminal
i see the arrest of Radovan Karadzic at this time justification for the indictment of President Omar Al bashir because Karadzic was staying in Serbia since 1995, and was not captured so why he is arrested now? i think this is some kind of moving world muslim eye from Sudan leader and blinding International concern about Sudan. Western Powers really are playing rough game, and i think every one can understand what is behind the arrest of Karadzic.

"War criminal" Karadzic arrested
Karadzic is a cold blooded murderer who killed innocent people in Bosnia during the war,he should be given the maximum punishment by The Hague tribunal for the crimes he did, and the Serbian nationalist who call him still a hero are evil men of this planet earth.

Karadzic
I wonder if like those senior defendants before him, Karadzic will 'get ill' during the trials. This is actually an opportunity for the WHOLE truth about Srebreniza to come to the world. The release of Naser Oric recently is a slap in the face of justice, as his forces terrorised and murdered thousands of Serbs around Srebrenica before the take over of the city, and he and his men fled, leaving the innocents behind to face the revenge of the Serb forces. Where is justice for Oric's victims?

karadzic
this has nothing to do with what the US is doing in Iraq or what Blair did during his time as prime minister, this day should be focused on expressing joy for the justice that has been brought to the victims of the war. this is great news, and although completely strategic on behalf of serbian officials, better late than never!! finally something is being done about the heinous crimes committed against innocent people

radovan, welcome to the hague!
sarajevo was celebrating last night. after so many years.. if karadzic believes his political project was a dignified and lawful one, let him defend it at the ICTY. i hope he is provided with a fair and impartial trial and i hope all the evidence against him (and there are many) will be publicized so that nobody can claim this is an anti/serb court. the ICTY is not perfect, but it is not anti/serb. he is guilty of killing civilians in bosnia and turning sarajevo into ruins. iva, sarajevo

Arrest of Karadzic
Why is this man already being labelled a "war criminal"?He ahs neither been tried nor condemned as such-yet! Nevertheless,a positive step when can we expect to see the US and British war criminals,Bush and Blair in handcuffs,on similar charges?Naturally, double standards do not apply here for they are "leaders" of democratic countries-as they say, yeah, right!

Karadjic
am very happy he is cought, but Mladic has to be caught as well. Bush has not recognised the Yugoslavia Tribunal and the International Criminal Court. Lets hope Obama will win and then clean up the mess of Bush and friends, and recognize the International Criminal Court. I would not mind to see Bush here in the Hague prison as well. I am happy to see the happiness of Bosnian people , hope it helps them in their relief of their sorrow.

Maybe the world will get better
I remember watching the news when Milosevic was arrested and I was disappointed when he prematurely died while in prison, with the trial unfinished. I thought: when will they get Mladic and Karadzic? Now at least one of them has been caught, and I hope justice will be done. I shared this news with all my students today, and will do so all week long. Let history not repeat itself. Let justice be done. The world is watching. Never again.

Why now?
Even though this is a positive development, there isn’t much satisfaction, particularly if we reminisce of the trials to late Milosevic and other unremitting saga trials at ICTY. Haydara is probably right Bosnian experience proves that the International community always chooses one of the 2 strategies for the Balkans, either ‘stick or carrot’ or the ‘diversion’. I am just not sure if this one is a small scale, to distract from yet another political disaster in Bosnia or from a larger, world c

Other war criminals..
Russia, China and US are not full members of the ICC so stop expecting anyone like Bush or Putin to be brought before the court.
