Russia angry over US missile shield

Russia has reacted angrily to a deal signed between Warsaw and Washington to station a missile defence system in Poland.

Moscow on Friday said the US had shown that Russia was the true target of the defensive shield, as tension between the two powers continued to rise over the conflict in Georgia.

"The fact that this was signed in a period of very difficult crisis in the relations between Russia and the United States over the situation in Georgia shows that, of course, the missile defence system will be deployed not against Iran but against the strategic potential of Russia," Dmitry Rogozin, Russia's Nato envoy, said.

General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy head of Russia's general staff, warned that Poland was making itself a target for Russia's military "100 per cent" by hosting the defence system.

"It becomes a target for attack. Such targets are destroyed as a first priority," Nogovitsyn said.

Poland agreed on Thursday to host elements of the US global anti-missile system after Washington agreed to boost Poland's own air defences.

On Friday, Radek Sikorski, the Polish foreign minister, said that Poland was open to Russian inspections of the shield because it wanted to give Moscow "tangible proof'' that the planned bases were not directed against Russia.

Washington says the missile system is aimed at protecting the US and its allies from long-range missiles that could be fired by what it terms "rogue states", including Iran.

Moscow has long opposed the system, other parts of which are due to be stationed in the Czech Republic.

Georgia crisis

Moscow and Washington have been trading barbs over Georgia, a key US ally in the region, after Russian troops routed Georgian forces as they tried to take back control of South Ossetia, a Georgian separatist region backed by Moscow.

Russian units then went into several towns in Georgian territory, provoking US officials to invoke memories of the Soviet Union's occupation of Eastern Europe during the Cold War.

Rogozin criticised the US for failing to support Russia in the Georgia crisis and said relations could be harmed.

He said: "I consider that the United States is not acting in a cautious manner in this situation.

"Instead of getting full moral and political support in the struggle against real aggression and ethnic cleansing, we have heard a mass of unpleasant words and threats. That will, of course, not strengthen our relations."

Some Polish analysts have argued that it was images of the conflict in Georgia that push Warsaw to agree to the shield deal after months of talks.

They also said it risked putting more pressure on ties with Russia just months after Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister, vowed to improve his country's historically strained relations with its powerful neighbour.

Kazimierz Kik, a sociology professor at Poland's Swietokrzyska Academy, said: "It can now be expected that this will be the beginning of the end of Polish-Russian talks. This agreement can be seen as a purely anti-Russian agreement.

It's making Poland part of the US defence system and, in my view, pushes Poland along a well-worn road of mistakes - looking for allies afar and enemies nearby."

No one can ever believe it
Everybody knows well that the missile defensive sheild of the US is not to protect EU and their military bases from countries like Iran, or like President Bush said from AlQaeda, it is all about that USA had never trusted Russia nor the former USSR, they only forget that Russia is eversince a super power country.

World view of U.S.
I really hope that the citizens of other countries realize that U.S. citizens do not share the same views as our government. Most people are hard working, fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, and children...wanting to be happy and peaceful. It's like saying all U.S. citizens are like the KKK...or all Muslims are like the extreme Muslim groups...or all Germans are like Hitler. It's just not like that. The average person does not strive for world domination. Noone knows the whole picture.

US missile plans
What rights has that Busch to sign up that missile plan with Poland . What a war monger . What would be his reaction if Russia would put missiles say in Cuba ? Just high time that he gets out of that White House before he creates another war .

Puppets & Puppet Masters
In response to Craig from UK who claimed that the US & UK are the first you run to when confronted by an aggressive neighbor 95% of the time the aggressors in any conflict are the US/UK/ one of their puppets (like Saddam in the Iran-Iraq war). Poland is clearly being run by a western controlled dictator. All this talk about democracy is nothing but an illusion. This point is easily proven when considering that over 75% the of Polish people oppose this plan, but are powerless to stop it!

US missile shield
Its true that there is the need of another superpower in the world stage to stop the US colonialism. But it would be better if countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic in this case, stopped being US puppets and possessed just a bit of pride and not let themselves be used.

US missle shield
Many people in the US are worried about what their government is doing, too. However, most people are being fooled by the government, which has been telling them lies to convince them to follow along with hidden agendas. I only hope that, if another country wants to hurt us, they will remember who the real enemy is, and will not attack civilians.

Whos the puppets?
If you had not slept thru the history lessons you would know thar Poland and Czech Republic, and most of the other countries in eastern europe, was occupied by the soviet. It is not strange that they go for the opposite, who in a way helped free them.

Missile / Defence
After 20 , 30 , 40 years of occupation, countries in Eastern Europe have decided Democracy is the way forward. For all people who slag off the UK and US. Remember two important things. 1. Who is the first you ask when you need help from an aggresive neigbour or internal aggressor the US and UK. 2. Who gives £6 billion dollars between them each year in Aid to countries around the world. People have short memories. Poland and the Czech are looking after their best interests, by signing deal.

I will have nukes 300miles from home...
Seriously... this is not about US imperialism anymore. Had there been no conflict in georgia the shield would probably not have been accepted by the polish gov. I would suggest to read polish newspapers on the matter. It is a logical reaction to the current situation of russia that manifests itself as a direct threat. The idea behind this is a possible attempt to isolate russia from europe ( no one wants in Eastern Europe to have Russia as a superpower AND a neighbour)

yea right.
Speaking to the other Americans here. We do not share a lot of our governments decisions but we do stand togather when were talking about our allies. We help more, send more, risk more, die more, provide more then anyone else on earth. Some do not like us colinizing the world but would condemn us soon as we stopped helping. We are not in fear of anyone or anything togather we stand. If they dont get it togather we will step in. Here there or where you are too.

The Devil`s help
Sorry to say it to people like Joe, that US never has helped any country without any interest. US only help to get something back, to brainwashing or take advantage. Why countries like Haiti a very poor country does not get any help like Georgia? A. becouse there`s nothing to get back from there. US people, the world doesn`t need your help. Just leave us alone it`s the best help, we don`t like captain America. US give to one hand and steal with two!
