Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgia's president, has called for an immediate ceasefire to the conflict in South Ossetia, adding that Russia has launched a "full-scale military invasion".
The Georgian town of Gori, 30km from the breakaway region, is the home to a military base but it is civilians that have borne the brunt of the Russian assault.
