Police shooting sparks Greece riots

After the shooting, riots and protests against the police spread across Greece [Reuters]

Riots have broken out across Greece after police shot dead a 15-year-old boy in Athens.

Police said the teenager was shot in the traditionally left-wing Exarchia district of the Greek capital on Saturday after the boy tried to throw a firebomb at a patrol car.

The teenage was rushed to a nearby hospital but doctors could only confirm his death.

The news enraged hundreds of youths in the neighbourhood, who began attacking police cars with stones and firebombs, burning dozens of cars and smashing shop windows.

"Hundreds of them hit the streets, probably for revenge ... Dozens of police units are gathering to try to control the situation," a police official, who declined to be named, said.

Police responded by firing tear gas at the crowd, evacuating some restaurants in the area, and closing several streets to all traffic.

Hundreds of youths also took to the streets in Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city, after the news of the shooting was reported.

The protests soon spread to the northern cities of Komotini and Ioannina and the Cretan city of Hania.

Government apology

Several hours after the incident, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, the interior minister, appologised for the incident on private Mega TV.

"On behalf of the government and the prime minister, I express my sorrow for the incident and especially the death of the young boy," Pavlopoulos said.

"An investigation to clarify the situation has already begun. There will be an exemplary punishment and measures will be taken so that such a thing will not be repeated." He added.

Police sources also said that two police officers were arrested and were being questioned over the incident.

I am afraid to say, but I agree with Miguel. I never promote violence, but If you're throwing a deadly weapon at people who have been charged with keeping the peace and saftey of everyone else...what do you expect? I believe the officer was worried for his own safety and did what he had to do. what was a fifteen year old boy doing with a fire bomb? Where are his parents? or if not parents, gaurdians? Funny, that if this youth were Arab, it would be called a terroist attack.

the Greek police are very bad, and always ill-treat the citizens and harass them . I am pretty sure the 15 years old boy is innocent.

the kid did not throw a firebomb. That's what the police claims in order to justify their action.

There are many ways for the police to retaliate and get a situation under control. Unnecessarily shooting and killing a civilian is simply unacceptable...It's disgusting!

Riots in Greece
Yes, the boy was throwing a fire bomb at a police vehicle. But was this just a random act or an expression of deeper political tensions in Greece ? I don't know the answer.

I knew the boy. He was in my school and he was the brother of a friend of mine. My friends were with him when the incident happened and I can assure you that he just threw a bottle of water on their car for fun. Then the police offiser attacked him verbally and when the boy told him that there is nothing he can do to him (the offecer to the boy) he pulled the gun aimed at him and shot him. Do you still think that the boy deserved it?

Greece Riots (Athens)
My wife and I were in Greece the first five days of the riots. I have to admit that we are not educated about the political issues that lead up to these riots. But I can say that the distruction that we witnessed was very troublesome. Here is a country that is already having economic problems and now because of these riots there are over 400 large and small business burnned and thousands of more people out of work just before X-mass. Maybe someone can help us understand why they chose this

There was no fire bomb, no gang. 3 kids attacked verbally the cops and one of them gets shot. There is a resident's video and witnesses to confirm the story.

Policeman has been charged with murder
Quick news is alwasy uncomplete news, and quick opinion based on quick news may make you murder-friendly. This is what has happened both to "miguel" from Mexico and "scott" from Canada, regardless of they being peaceloving or fascist minded. A few hours after the news spread, the policeman responsible for the killing of the boy has been charged with intended murder. Even if the boy was throwing a molotov bomb - these can hardly kill policemen at work , as videos of the riots clearly show.

Greek Riots
Dear friends at Al Jazeera, please don't follow the lead of the establishment media and report what 'government sources' or 'officials' state. Media has to be the watchdog of governments. We have to assume that all governments lie to protect their positions in power. Would they admit to shooting an unarmed 15 year old? Hardly. If you are going to give the government line then please make sure to interview witnesses to get the other side. There are ALWAYS two sides.

Boy got Murdered
I'm surprised that you are so badly misinformed! According to all existing evidence and testimonies from eye witnesses, rioting took place in the Exarchia Area of Athens, a police patrol car drove by, and the riots through stones at them. The patrol car with 2(!) police officers pulled up and according to the officers, they tried to make some arrests from the 30+ people that were present. The 15-year-old boy verbally attacked the cops, and one of them shot him 2 times!

first of all I learned not from the news that the boy threw a bottle. Whatever he did you don't have the right to shoot someone in the heart. You are not god to judge who is going to die. I know the area that the children where and I know the police in greece. In conclusion they are just murderers. And scott in greece is different than in canada (I am in canada right now) we go out till late and we learn by our own experience I used to go out till late that doesn't mean that I have been shot.

ok i believe after reading this that he didnt throw a fire bomb. it easy to fake verbally but not on a video. But the government apologized and the officers were charged. That kind of thing happens right or not, police (and other officals) get obsessed with power and think they can do what they want. this has been proven, its not just an opinion. Thats why stuff like this happens. Im not trying to justify the actions but it does happen. I think all are in the wrong the police rioters and the boy

The poor boy did not throw a single molotov cocktail at the cops. They verbally attacked them and threw a bottle. Then the cops run away, parked the car and returned on foot to shoot him. The cop responsible has been charged with assassination with intentionally rade.

Greek Riots
Naturally we aren't getting the whole story. My greek wife read from a greek news site that the teen threw a emtpy bottle at a cop car. The cops got out of the car and shot the kid, with witnesses all around. Soon after other police arrived and began threatening all the witnesses and telling them they didn't see anything. That's why the riots started

Police shooting sparks Greece riots
Dear all, please be informed for the real info about this story and do not criticise, even judge people where violence (in our case, governmental violence) hold them a place into 'eternity book' in a society where is trying to 'sweep all the unnecessities 'beneath the rug'.

Riots
I don't know much about police in Greece but from what I hear and have seen now they are abusive. However retaliating against the police shooting him with riots is just as bad or worse. Not only does in not solve anything it just Causes more problems and more violence. Of course people have a right to be angry but that does not give them the right to just go out and start attacking police officers.
