France blasts China's 'psychodrama'

China has accused Sarkozy of interfering in its domestic affairs by meeting the Dalai Lama [AFP]

A French minister has told China that there is no need to turn her president's meeting with the Dalai Lama "into a psychodrama".

Rama Yade, the junior minister for human rights, said on RTL radio on Sunday that the French government could meet "whomever it wants" and that it had no plans to change its relations with China.

Yade said China and France should be pooling their efforts to tackle the global financial crisis instead of feuding over Tibet.

"We need to co-operate, calmly," she said.

China's foreign ministry summoned Herve Ladsous, the French ambassador, to strongly protest against Saturday's 30 minute meeting between Nicolas Sarkozy and the Dalai Lama in the Polish city of Gdansk, on the sidelines of a gathering of Nobel Peace prize winners.

Beijing said the meeting was an "unwise move" and warned of broader damage to relations with the European Union, of which France holds the rotating presidency.

China had earlier pulled out of its 11th summit with the EU over the meeting.

'Undermined political foundations'

He Yafei, China's vice-foreign minister, said Sarkozy's meeting "grossly interfered in China's internal affairs and undermined the political foundations of Sino-French and Sino-European relations".

"This wrong action harmed the bilateral political trust, all round co-operation, and bright future, hard won in the 45-year establishment of Sino-French relationship," He said.

Liu Jianchao, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, said it was up to France to repair ties.

Sarkozy said the private meeting posed no threat to Beijing, but he defended his right to set his own agenda and also said there was "no need to dramatise things".
Bernard Kouchner, the French foreign minister, had said before the meeting that "we cannot have France's conduct dictated to, even by our friends".

Christine Lagarde, the economy minister, had earlier stressed that economic relations should be spared from reprisals.

"There are many French businesses working in China and I believe that it is in everyone's interest that this relationship continues, despite what China considers to be a minor incident," she said.

However, some in China's online community have already called for a boycott of French goods.

Boycott threat

Yade said France was free to meet
"whomever it wants" [AFP]
"I am going to boycott French goods for my whole life. I will never use French brands or any product made in France," said one internet user, who identified himself as Yan Zhongjie.

Angry Chinese boycotted French products after pro-Tibet protests in April marred the Olympic torch relay in Paris and Sarkozy threatened to stay away from the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics.

The French leader in the end attended the Olympics ceremony and
sent his wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, and Kouchner to meet the Dalai Lama when he visited France in August.

China has argued that the Dalai Lama is seeking full independence, something the Tibetan spiritual leader in exile dismissed on Friday as "totally baseless".

"When China becomes more democratic, with freedom of speech, with rule of law and particularly with freedom of the press … once China becomes an open, modern society, then the Tibet issue, I think within a few days, can be solved," the Dalai Lama said.

Addressing the European parliament in Brussels on Thursday, he said China lacked the moral authority to be a true superpower.

President Sarkozy is so untrustworthy! To be a leader of a big country as France, he must have some sense about how to communicate with a "friend". If somebody is going to say that Corsica is not part of France, I wonder how they respond it! Have he got any basic respect for his "friend"? I seriously doubt it!

"He has right to see anybody he want", of course. BUT hes showing off to shame his friends!
Of course, President Sarkozy has right to see anyone! But does he have to show it off to the whole world, trying to shame and hurt his friend's feeling? What's more, being a leader of a nation, he should be careful about what he says and what he does, isn't it? He is showing off his power and just want to make fools of chinese who used to regard French people as frineds. If he ever ever has any respect for his frineds, I think he should think over his swinging words and actions.

childish
The chinese are behaving in a childish manner. The Tibetans are poor people, they do not have economic or military power. They only have a little sympathy for their cause in some countries. Can China prevent the world from trading with Taiwan or from selling arms to Taiwan? If the chinese think they have become an economic/military super power they must try to stop the world from trading with Taiwan which is pretty much a developed country.

China should grow up
This seems to be a monthly event. Someone does something to offend the increadibly "important" middle kingdom and they threaten serious damage to relations. You can only say that so many times before people stop caring. If China wants to be a world power, it better be ready to take insults with charm.

Welcome to the Jungle, China
Dear China, As a world super power (which the US has been and you are becoming) your government is going to engage in shady events that abuse human rights and cause untold suffering. This may cause you some moral qualms. I recommend alcohol, which can help you forget what you are inadvertently a part of. Until then, everyone in the world is going to hate you and go to great lengths to anger you, insult you. You're going to have to get used to it. Good luck!

China a big bully
China is a superpower no doubt about it. However it is not appropriate to act like a bully. This is a free world, China might have enslaved and kept all their citizens in dark, but they need to realize that they cannot coerce every country in the world as they do to their citizens.

France meets D. Lama
It does not matter whether one group say the other group are being 'unfriendly' or 'childish'. The point is that way before france met with D.Lama, they knew it would cause a stir. So france has a been a bit naughty!

Boycott made in china.
If chinese want to boycott products made elsewhere just because other countries have the liberty to meet whoever they want, then go ahead. Maybe the rest of the world will boycott chinese products...no more made in china!

Jessie, Speaking with Dalai-Lama is not only talking about indendance, if you can understand it. This is also a nobel Prize and we French think it is worth to listen to great people too. In Corsica, Cutlure, traditions, freedom is totally supported by France. So I wish to know exactly what is your revendication. Friends: Dalai Lama is definitly a person we choose to meet, like real friends, and China is someone we have to meet (G8, economics) and you know it.

People from the United States shouldnt talk at all. At least China does things through talk and protest. When someone else in another country does this to america. america channels money to opposition or assissinates the leader. Look at South America. Look at the World. Again, people from America shouldnt talk. Go focus on your economy that your great leader Bush ruined. First you support him 100% now you hate him? haha, you make me laugh.

Why dalai lama got Nobel prize?
Because Dalai lama is a tool and engaging in independance of Tibet. That is the reason Europe and West countries honor this title to him. Did he really did something qualified to the Nobel Prize? Only in latest years, Dalai gave up his independance and now looking for self-Gov. Because Dalai realized that he is becoming old and do not have time to finish his "independance" job. West Countries, like USA, likes to gave a lot of prize or honor to people who are against China.

Dalai Lama is certainly good at talking nicely and entertain the host with beautiful words. Unfortunately he was the head of the slavery system in Tibet before China reexert soveignty over it. Chinese leaders are pragmatic people. They do not have graceful PR skills that western pliticians got, neither the tool of religion to brain wash people. They are judged by how much contribution they made to Chinese people.

i really wonder what wrong with Chinese poople or chinese government s way of thinking, sometimes they say the tibetan are so happy and enjoy their full right in tibet, also there is no word of repression and suppression in in tibet just in order to fool the world wide people but the world wide people awoke from this march protest in tibet and come to what is really happening in tibet and left the chinese government speechless. Now the chinese government long hand is touching in European.

The problem with the Dalai is he is not a true monk. True monks are very passive and do not respond even if you slap them on the head. But the Dalai is so talkative and noisy.

I think China's Government and its people have to realize that Western governments such as France have civil liberties. President Sarkozy has the right to talk to anyone he wants, without having to fear being condemned for his actions. The fact is China does not have these civil liberties and China hates Tibet for making the world aware of the injustices committed against the Tibetan people in their Olympic protests, which in my opinion are entirely justified.

i believe that france is making a politically just decision. Especially in light of its very active political scene, it cannot let itself be strongarmed into ignoring the Dalai Lama. It is also a wrong move by the chinese to so overtly try to inhibit contact between the Dalai Lama and foreign governments they know that freedom of speech is allowed pretty much everywhere else, and such thuggish political tactics will lead to resistnace and not compromise. free tibet.

If I were Chinese, I'd be more upset about my lack of basic rights. I also don't think many Chinese can claim an understanding of international affairs that isn't incredibly biased since all news is filtered by their government.

France blast Chinas psychodrama
When are the Chinese going to realise that the west don't like China's dominance in the Global Power play. They want China out of the sand box they are playing in. So China should take it calmly and start by cancelling all 150 AirBus orders. The French don't think you are worth worrying about. Beside do we really need French 'goods'. It's no big deal Europe is a big continent and it will do nicely without the Chinese. Free Corsica and return it to Italy then we talk.

the right to meet anyone
How great the man is! He has the right to meet whomever he wants to. If he likes to meet a terrorist, he has the right. If he likes to be a terrorist, he has the right. It is his right. But beware of such a man. When you meet a man who is going to make friends with anyone, eveny your enemy, it's better to stay away from him. It is not France blasts China's psychodrama, it is France that is showing its French impulse. As a Chinese, I feel sorry for France.

Proud of France
I'm deeply proud of Sarkozy's willingness to publicly roll up his sleeves and act on the global stage with conviction and integrity. He is surely the strongest leader in recent European rotation for the presidency. China has some serious soul searching to do int eh 21st century and more leaders must hold it accountable publicly.

Tibet
After reading the comments made by the readers. I don't belive anyone know Tibetans are in much better condition now than ever before. More schools, hospitals and jobs. There are many religions sets in Tibet. This Dalai Lama is a self serving politician. In exile so long, he is afraid of losing his power in Tibet. As for human rights, Ask him about human rights when he was in Tibet and in control. Ask the Tibetan people. If people are really interested. The libraries have books on Tibet.

if Sarkozy has the right to meet dalai lama then the Chinese Government and the Chinese people have the every right to boycott france's foreign policies. Westerners: Grow up and visit China and see what the real Tibet is like (not some fake pictures the dalai exile political party trying hard to paint and fool you westerners haha, sometimes it's just funny for us Chinese to see how naive the westerners are :P)

Freedom of contact
People in the so-called West - a term I don't like do not have the right to meet whom ever they like. In Australia we are prohibited from meeting members of certain groups - which, have been deemed terrorist. I am white Australian, I don't consider myself American or European and I can't help feeling that people like Sarkozy completely miss the point about the new world order - and that both beggars belief and is cause for concern

It was again china, who used to support tyrant leader of the world such as Burma, Sudan etc. and continue to suppress different minorities in the name of one china policy. We Burmese are fed up with China unconditional support of Myanmar military junta.
