Livni: No crisis in Gaza Strip

Tzipi Livni held talks with Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris[AFP]

Tzipi Livni, Israel's foreign minister, has again rejected a French proposal for a ceasefire to allow aid into the Gaza Strip saying there is "no humanitarian crisis".

Israel's foreign ministry quoted Livni as having said in a statement during a trip to Paris that "there is no humanitarian crisis in the [Gaza] Strip, and therefore there is no need for a humanitarian truce."

Over the past six days more than 400 Palestinians have been killed and 2,000 wounded under an Israeli aerial bombardment.

The strip, home to 1.5 million people, is already suffering shortages of power, food and medical supplies due to a two-year blockade imposed by Israel on the area.

Livni was quoted as saying: "Israel has been supplying comprehensive humanitarian aid to the Strip... and has even been stepping this up by the day."

The Israeli cabinet had previously rejected a French proposal for a 48-hour ceasefire on Wednesday.

Livni held talks with Nicolas Sarkozy, France's president, in the French capital on Thursday as pressure built on Israel to agree a truce to allow aid into the besieged Gaza Strip.

Sarkozy ceased to hold the rotating presidency of the European Union as of midnight on Wednesday, but decided to go ahead with the meeting which was aimed at brokering some form of end to the Israeli assault on Gaza.

The Israeli cabinet rejected a French proposal for a ceasefire on Wednesday on the grounds it was seeking a "durable solution" and that a temporary truce would simply allow Hamas fighters to regroup and re-arm.

Hundreds dead

France has been vocal in the diplomatic push for peace in Gaza and chaired an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers in Paris on Tuesday to discuss solutions to the conflict.

The Czech Republic has now taken over the EU presidency and a spokesman for the country's foreign office confirmed to Al Jazeera that it would be continuing the line of the French ceasefire proposal.

A Czech mission will begin a trip to the region on Sunday with visits scheduled to include Amman, Tel Aviv, Ramallah and Cairo.

Rula Amin, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Beirut, said a senior Hamas source had confirmed on Thursday that there had been a European proposal for a ceasefire, but that its terms were very vague and that Hamas was still looking into it.

Amin said the ceasefire called for a halt to all attacks from both sides on civilian targets, the opening of crossings into Gaza and some kind of European presence to help organise the border crossings.

Bernard Kouchner, France's foreign minister, said on Wednesday that he and Sarkozy would be in southern Lebanon next week, and "will see if it is possible to go to Israel".

your objective news coverage
I'm impressed by your coverage of the current Israeli situation, namely the Livni: No Crisis in Gaza Strip. No name calling, no slanted rhetoric, just facts about who said what. Our U.S. news sources would do well to emulate this story.

shame on Livni and her associates
One big lie, among other lies, is the Israeli government propaganda around the world to convince the European population that the massacre in Gaza is aiming the Hamas (democratically elected ) group. But the reality, that should be more emphasized on al jazeera english news, is that the Israeli bombers are killing people in Gaza. and the Gaza strip is an open concentration camp where million of Palestinians are starving. USA and there allies in Europe block any attempt to stop the aggression.

the real of rights!
I think what happends currently in Palestine (Gaza) has many things to learn! Israel attacks with much modern weapons (you can see the targets) and kills 400+ people (and 2000+ wounded) and say "THERE IS NO HUMANITARIAN CRISIS" vow! My friends! please study about the history of Palestine-Israel conflict to learn about our real world, especially Human Rights.

Gaza - no crisis
Of course not. We have Ms Livni's word for it. Incidentally, when was she last there? It's a paradise, clearly. Wonder why the international Great Ones don't try it instead of Sharm-al-Sheik for their get-togethers. I'm sure there'd be an impressive "firework" display.

Deception and provocation
u know what is so ironic, israel boasts such a hi-tech defence system (which it proposes to strategically target hammas).... YET could not the IDF use common sence when estsablising the towns which are in close proximity to gaza.. if the israelis really cared about its citizens it would have rather set up their miletary bases in those hamas target areas, this just proves that israel wanted this war and provoked it

the crisis in gaza
I am not fully agreed with livny, there is great suffering in the strip. war is suffering, and I'm sure a lot of innocent might be killed. from the other side I could't see any other solution for the terror act. If someone declares He want's me dead I'll try to make sence on Him, but If he start, surrealisticly to hurt me, and won't stop, even in the price of human life and disaster. well, I prefer to hear from you what to do because I'm bribed on this.

Double Standards for Palestine
How dare Livni say there is no crisis in Gaza. There are over 500 people dead, most of which are women and children. What i dont understand is why the world is just sitting back and watching. Can you imagine how the world would react if Israel was under the any sort of attack never mind one of the is horrific scale Israel is a selfish nation which has resorted to cowardly actions in order to stop the so called terror. The truth is that Israel are the real the terrorist. God bless Palestine

Gaza
Shame on Hamas for putting its people in that situation. Maybe the people will wise up and ban Hamas from Gaza.
