Firms sued for Israeli settlements

The separation wall has engulfed half of the West Bank town of Bilin [GALLO/GETTY]

A Palestinian village has sued two Canadian companies for building in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, the village's lawyer said.

This is the first time a private company has been sued for investing in settlements, which are a violation of international law, Michael Sfard, the attorney representing Bilin village, said on Thursday.

The claim was filed on Wednesday in a Canadian court against Green Park International and Green Mount International, sister companies registered in Quebec.

The companies could not be reached due to the time difference.

The construction is taking place on land seized from Bilin after Israel captured the West Bank in 1967 - a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which forbids an occupying power from transferring its own civilians into occupied territory.

The suit asks the court to halt all construction and to demolish the homes the companies have built in Modiin Illit, Israel's largest settlement.

About 250 apartments in 30 buildings are at issue, Sfard said.

The village also seeks punitive damages of $1.98m.

The unprecedented suit "will serve as a blinking red light for any investors and corporations that are considering doing anything in the settlements," Sfard said.

Bilin is best known for its weekly protests against Israel's West Bank separation wall, which is being built to stop suicide bombers, but has also taken half of the village's land.

Daylight Robbery
The "separation wall" is being built to separate areas of palestinian territory from the rest of the West Bank and incorporate them into the State of Israel, not "to stop suicide bombers". Why repeat Israeli propaganda?

Re: Firms sued for Israeli settlements
I agree, it's about time somebody took some action like this. The settlements are illegal and someone needs to take action!

Suing Canadian Companies for Settlements
Great article and great move. The Israeli courts are completely useless in the face of these crimes against the Geneva Convention. Hurt the illegal Israeli settlement proliferation by making foreign investment a losing proposition!

suing
Right on!!! Sue the pants off of them and let's continue the list: Caterpiller, and any of the US companies and Jewish" philanthropy" organizations promoting the "right to return" that makes these settlements so appealing to American Jews

sueing for settlements
good article, and yes, bravo to the people of biliin, but i don't see the logic of the author perpetuating the myth that the apartheid wall is being built to "stop suicide bombers". we all know this is a false portrayal and excuse for israel to continue human rights violations and vioence against palestinians.

Suing Firms
Joe. I completely agree. But wouldn't it be great if the UN had the strength to stand up to Israel and support the people who really need some help on such matters.

Those companies should be sued. After all, they are violating laws and should be prosecuted. Bush wanted "democracy" in the Middle East. Here it is in action! Hope Canada enjoys this piece of democracy that they hoped to foster. War criminal Bush should be careful what he wishes for:)

At the Canadian Tax Payers expense
This is not a Canadian matter, why bring it to Canada and make us pay for it? Canada has already contributed to the PA.
