Iran continues war games

The US says it has enhanced its security presence in the Gulf [GALLO/GETTY]

Iran has displayed its military power for a third consecutive day, carrying out more missile tests and holding exercises in the Gulf.

State-controlled television reported on Thursday that shore-to-sea, surface-to-surface and sea-to-air missiles had been fired by the naval section of the Revolutionary Guards.

It also said the war games had included the firing of a torpedo, unveiled in 2006, that Tehran describes as a super-fast weapon capable of hitting enemy submarines.

In a separate exercise late on Wednesday, the military also fired "longer and medium range missiles," state television reported, showing several missiles being fired into the night sky.

Those tests came after nine missiles, including the Shahaab-3 which is capable of reaching Israel, were fired earlier in the day.

'Provocative' actions

The White House said it could not confirm reports that Iran had carried out a new round of tests, but called Iran's actions provocative.

"The expanded use of ballistic missiles are in violation of UN Security Council resolutions," Tony Fratto, white House spokesman, said.

"We want to see them stop enriching uranium and we would like to see them stop these provocative tests that only further isolate the Iranian people."

Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, said that her country had enhanced its  presence in the Gulf and would not hesitate to defend itself or allies in the region.

She said it was time for Iran to "get on the right side of the international community".

"It ought to be talking about that, not about threats against America or threats against America's allies because frankly it's not going to do them any good," she said.

As Iranian television showed footage of the missile tests and naval manoeuvres, Israel unveiled an aircraft it said could carry out spying missions undetected.

Ehud Barak, Israel's defence minister, told Israeli public radio that his country was ready to respond to any threat from Tehran.

"Israel is the strongest country in the region and we have already shown in the past that we are not afraid of acting when our vital interests are threatened," he said.

'Set on fire'

On Tuesday, the first day of war games, an aide to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, said the country would "set on fire" Israel and the US navy in the Gulf as its first response to any attack.

Earlier this month it emerged that Israel had carried out manoeuvres in the Mediterranean which appeared to be practices for a potential strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.

The US accuses Iran of covertly seeking to develop nuclear weapons, a charge that Tehran vehemently denies. Iran says its nuclear programme is aimed at civilian energy production.

Diplomats are currently looking at Tehran's response to a package of incentives offered to persuade it to halt urnaium enrichment.

Israelis are all too aware that the Arab world has more to fear from the Persians than the Jews.

Why to talk about Iran only? Let there be no atom bombs in the entire world. The Occidentals need to change their partial mentality. Iran is very different from Iraq or Afghanistan. They are one nation. US and her allies will face tougher and possibly the deadliest resistance. The result will be more bloodshed.

Iran has a right to develop nuclear power and WOMD if it chooses. Bud out or blow up idiots.

Why all this?
Why are we campaigning for war? Islam is a religion of peace and christanity is a religion of peace too so why do we like to fight war. After fighting we will still come back and make peace so why do we fight at all? The US, Iran, Israel and everybody should come out and embrace peace. The amount of money that is going to be spent for war can be converted into meaningful things and even help poor countries who are suffering one natural deaster to another. LET PEACE REAIN.

IRAN WAR GAMES

Iran's nuclear ambition should not be allowed. They have sufficient natural resources and they are selling the gas to india. Also they are talking about the total destruction of Israel. In this era, we cannot allow a coutry or leader to have that type of ambition. Also, Irans nuclear program will strat other Sunni majority countries to start their own nuclear programs. That entire middle east will be chaos. SO PLEASE STOP IRAN.

Yes Israel more that likely has nukes, but obviously they're strickly for defense, otherwise they would've been used already against those rogue nations of the middle east. You know Syria, Iran & Lebanon...the latter not so much the government but certain radical groups within. Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons, NEVER! The people in control of that country are too fanatical....God Bless!

You are right Sisa. Why does not anybody say a word when that cursed country kills people in the Middle East? Every time that ‘israel’ can kill unarmed civilians, and steal their soil, their homes. These are facts which can be found in the news, but does anybody say a word? NO!! However, what do those “american sophists” say to the media? JUST LIES!!. Come on Iran!! You got the right to defend your home and stops the real threat to the world.

missile test
So Iran tests new missile's, and what is the problem with that? Iran has the right to have missile's like any other country in the world and here is a list: USA, France, England, Russia, India, Germany, Isreal, Pakistan, and many more countries. Listen people Iran has every right to defend it's self as a country. Isreal and the USA have a problem with Iran owning any kind of weapon so if one day they go mental and decide to attack Iran, Iran will not be able to attack. Arab leader wake up

Every country has a right to defend itself. As Americans, we have a right to defend ourselves, Arabs have a right to defend themselves and so forth. Why the hell should Iran be treated any different? Iran has a right to test its missiles and defend itself if necessary. Not agreeing with their politics and not agreeing with defending themselves are two different issues. Our war criminal President should mind his own business and stop acting like a high school bully on the playground!

Iran please save us!
Americans are against hostilities with your nation and yet have lost all control of our so called representative government. We have become enslaved by our own hand and lost basic rights afforded to most all civilized society.

UN
I think if "use of ballistic missiles" is a violation of UN resolutions, this should also apply to the US, and Israel. It just looks hypocritical to have UN resolutions apply to only certain states, and be flouted by others, such as during the illegal invasion of Iraq by the US.

Iran and US
It is right time for US to come to their right senses, enough is enough, they are proving themselves to be a curse on the Earth-by their dirty and cheap and non-sense politics, even a LKG, UKG boy would prove to more rational, wise and practical than the guys governing US and their public! US nationals, wake up atleast now, save your honour, if something like that is left over yet . . . .

Iran-Israel-USA-EU
If only Iran will decide to attack or having nuclear weapons next future, Israel, USA and all European Union will be united to respond in any way. How Iran president can say that Israel (such as any other Nation) need to be destroyed, how !! He's not a President, he is a monster. I hope iranians will understand soon what kind of president they have.

Iran has rights too!
Iran has every right to atomic energy & war games. I am ashamed of what my countries foriegn policy has become. I think both Iran and US Presidents need to step back and develop some respect. Destruction of each other will not solve our issues!
