Iran missile photo 'doctored'
Experts say the top image may have been doctored to cover up a failed launch [AFP]

A photograph of a recent Iranian missile test was apparently doctored to show a fourth missile firing from a desert testing range, analysts and photographic experts have said.

The image was posted on Wednesday on a website run by Iran's Revolutionary Guards and was quickly circulated by news agencies, appearing on front pages of hundreds of newspapers and websites – including this one –around the world.

The scene was described as part of military manoeuvres in which nine missiles were test fired, including an enhanced version of the Shahab-3 missile.

But a subsequent version of what is apparently the same image has since emerged, showing just three missiles lifting off and one remaining on its launcher.

That has led some analysts to speculate that at least one of the missiles involved in the test failed to fire.

Iranian officials have made no comment on the photo.

The missile test was part of a show of force by Iran, drawing sharp responses from both the US and Israel amid escalating tensions over Iran's alleged nuclear weapons programme.

Smoke trail

Photo experts say the fourth missile appears to have been added digitally, pointing to similarities in the smoke trail and dust clouds from two of the other missiles.

The photo arm of the French news agency AFP, which was one of the first to release the original image, said on Thursday the picture was "apparently digitally altered to replace the grounded missile and launcher with a fourth successfully launched missile".

Mark Fitzpatrick of the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies told AFP: "It very much does appear that Iran doctored the photo to cover up what apparently was a misfiring of one of the missiles."

"The whole purpose of this testing was to send a signal, so Iran both exaggerated the capabilities of the missile in their prose and apparently doctored the photos as well," he said.

Gerard Issert, a technician at Granon, one of the largest photo laboratories in Paris, also told the agency that the photo was a "doctored image".

"Although the missiles weren't all equidistant from the camera, they're the same size in the picture," Issert said.

Doctoring photos of missile launch...
Just another attempt to mask the real truth. These missiles are nothing compared to that of Israel or the US, they are merely a propaganda tool. The truth is that Iran's military might isn't so mighty. They know it and we know it.

Why would Iran publish both photos?
And why not report on US media picture fakes and TV fakes? Like 9/11 for example.

@Fortone
Fortone, it sounds like you don't think anybody should be able to have missiles except the United States and its pledged allies... can't you see the immense hubris in such insinuations?

IRAN
Iran should stop playing with fire. They are continually destabilizing the whole region, and supporting terrorism abroad. They should pay more attention to their own poor economy rather than embarrass themselfs in a fight.

The image which had been shown earlier and the one came after, how they were distinguished...its ok if we leave that part to the photo experts but how this news was disseminated...i mean to say is there any middle man who released this information to photo experts or is there any iranian who leaked this information????????

Iran missile photo being doctored...
Why the various media focuses on the photos being doctored is irrelevant compared to the fact that the Iranian government has launched the missiles. Whether it is one or eight in one day, and one being photographically altered. The point is being missed that Iran has this capability to launch missiles. Just my two cents in this feedback

Iran missile photo
The pictured meant to be cropped to show a fourth missile gets even more interesting... One news site is reporting the whole picture is a scam. 4 different angles of same missile , as well as these pic's being old photo'sof an old outdated missile. Too,too funny , reeks of a kind of desperation

Not Even the Whole Truth
Al Jazeera has not even updated this article with the full truth. Not only was this image doctored, but CURRENT reports (check other news agencies) have determined that these are not even the missles they claim to be. These are old outdated missles not even capable of crossing the Iranian borders much less hit the Jews. Ha! Iran is a joke. All bark and no bite.

Iran missile photo doctored
If the photo is doctored or not so what? That missile could have been sitting there for a later on launch so what? What is important is that Israel and US and all its allies can make weapons to protect themselves but when an Islamic state does that its called "Axis Of Evil" as a Canadian Christian I am sick and tired of watching powerful nations bully smaller and weaker countries. What is the difference between this bully and the school one? Worry about your problems not others.

iran missle photo "doctored....
i am not an expert at photoshop, but i can tell you one thing, that top picture has definitely been "doctored" on! the person that did it wasn't even smart enough to get a missile picture from another source, he/she used the same picture for the forth missle from the same picture.... what a doofus... he must have been rushed to get this done, or he/she could have done a lot better job...

Iran missile photo doctored
I am sure there must be hundreds of pictures taken by Iranian officials during this demonstration. My question is that why would they want to pick this one, alter it and post it over the Internet!? I think the media simply picked the second picture, doctored it and blamed it on the Iranians!

It s an attempt to accuse Iranians of doctoring the image. Its too fake.
Not even a starting CG-artist with the job of a cover-up would leave the similarities in the trails&clouds. It was made obviously fake so the public can see the fakeness without using advanced methods. It' s to accuse Iranians of doctoring the image.

Doctored photos
Regardless of politics or who or why did it, the first photo was definitely doctored. But look at the plume of dust near the ground coming from the second missile from right. It is basically a copy of the first one on the right with a few pixels copied over in photoshop. Smoke and dust don't just repeat themselves like that. I think it is actually a really badly doctored photo.

the piture of Iranian missiles
Missiles are destructive weapons, be it three or four. Lets not underestimate Iran's, US, nor Israel's millitary capabilities. Let's work together to prevent another bloody war on the devestated people of Middle East
