Hezbollah prisoner swap under way
Kuntar, the longest held Lebanese prisoner in Israel, is to be repatriated [Reuters]

Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah have begun a prisoner exchange at the Naqura border crossing, with the bodies of two Israeli soldiers being delivered to the Red Cross.

The process got under way on Wednesday, with Hezbollah handing over what it said were the remains of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, two Israeli army reservists captured by the Shia group in 2006.

There had been speculation that at least one of the Israeli soldiers had been alive, but Hezbollah TV confirmed that both were dead.

Two coffins containing the bodies were taken in Red Cross vehicles across the border from Lebanon into Israel to be identified.

In return, the bodies of almost 200 people were received by Hezbollah, including the body of Dalal al-Maghrebi, a female fighter with the Palestinian Fatah movement.

'Difficult decision'

As well as handing over the bodies to Hezbollah, Israel has agreed to hand over five Lebanese prisoners including Samir Kuntar, convicted of murder and the longest held Lebanese prisoner in Israel.

"The Israeli cabinet agonised over it [the exchange] and voted in favour of it against the advice of the Israeli intelligence service ... which thinks it will only encourage kidnappings," David Chater, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Israel, said.

"But the bulk of Israeli public opinion is behind this deal," he said, reporting from Rosh Hanikra - the Israeli side of the border - where he said there was a strong military presence ahead of the exchange.

Miri Eisin, a former aide to the Israeli prime minister, said Israel found the release of Kuntar an "incredibly difficult decision".

"Today in Israel we are mainly reflecting on the price we pay in our country to defend our borders," she told Al Jazeera.

At the family home of reservist Regev, a crowd of about 50 mourners gathered and his family wept, seeing their son's coffin displayed on television for the first time.

Celebrations

While the scene was sombre in Israel, in Lebanon's Hezbollah-dominated south there was a mood of celebration.

Yellow Hezbollah flags lined the streets in towns and villages across southern Lebanon, as well as along the coastal highway from Naqura to Beirut, the capital.

One poster read: "Israel is shedding tears of pain, Lebanon is shedding tears of joy."

Hezbollah has dubbed the exchange Operation Radwan, in honour of Imad Moughniyah, known as "Hajj Radwan", the group's military commander who was assassinated in Syria in February.

Sheik Nabil Kaouk, Hezbollah's commander in south Lebanon, earlier termed Israel's approval of the prisoner swap an admission of defeat.

"It's regarded as being the final chapter of the 2006 war," journalist Robert Fisk, a Middle East expert, told Al Jazeera.

"The Israelis certainly lost that war, they did not get their prisoners back - not until now and they're getting them back dead. So more than 1,000 Lebanese civilians and more than 160 Israelis, most of them soldiers, all died for absolutely nothing and that's what today's prisoner exchanges prove."

Lebanon has declared a national holiday to celebrate the prisoner swap.

"This is a big day because it's the day we [Lebanon] have the liberation of four or five heroes," Wassim Manssouri, a professor in constitutional law at Beirut's Lebanese University, told Al Jazeera from the capital.

Palestinian reaction

Celebrations were also under way in Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank.

"The exchange is seen as a victory for Arab resistance," Nour Odeh, Al Jazeera's correspondent, in the West Bank, said.

Kuntar is a member of Lebanon's Druze population.

Walid Jumblatt, Lebanon's Druze leader, told Al Jazeera: "My father was the founder of a Lebanese-Palestinian coalition to fight Israel and recover the Palestinians' rights. My father would be happy."

"I am happy [too], but we should not forget the Palestinians who are detained in their own land," he said.

The Hezbollah exchange has prompted the public in Arab countries such as Jordan and Egypt - which have both signed peace deals with Israel - to question why their governments have not been able to repatriate the bodies of their soldiers.

However you may see it...I see it as a positive one for both parties concerned and as a step closer towards peace. Haven't we had enough war. Also, the fact remains that we all Lebanese, Israeli or other mourn our dead with grief, tears and pain.

Jewish law, tradition and history backs the redemption of captives, even in exchange dead ones, for what about the lives of their families? See the Shalom Hartman Institute commentary by Donniel Hartman - http://hartman.org.il/

" Warrior of freedom"
I still cannot understand how a murder of a 4 years old girl is calling a "warrior of freedom". I don't believe that the Qurean is calling for the killing of children, I still want to believe the Islamic religion is more humane than this

Kuntar deserves to die
This sick terrorist is a murderer of children and he should have been slowly tortured to death. May G-d give him cancer. If they kidnap 2 soldiers we should kidnap 20, and make sure when we exchange them for bodies, they are dead also.

Long Live Israel
We are deeply sad about the death of those great Israel Soldiers. The price for this should be paid by Hezbollah, gang of murderers. They say they are Muslims. Is Quran says to kill a captured soldiers ?

Interesting to see one group celebrating while another mourns. Somehow, to an outsider, the Israeli reaction seems more noble. The reaction in Lebanon and the slogan that there were tears in Israel and celebration in Lebanon seems somehow trite and hateful. Characteristics of humanity that we have all seen too much of...

Celebrate the arrival of your "Hero".....
Kantar is free and the celebrations in Lebanon are on thier way - The "Hero" is back home. The "Hero" that when he saw he is surounded, crushed the skull of a 4 year old girl with the butt of a rifle and then came out with his hands in the air and surrendered. This cowardly murderer is your hero. This is the man you are so happy to get back. Perhapse the heros of a nation tell more about the nation and it's people than anything else....

The Truth
The truth is Israel sends its young men and women to die for lost causes. Israel has massacred Arabs for the past fifty years. Arab countries that have standing 'peace' accords with Israel have not received the bodies of their fallen soldiers, yet those who resist have been able to do so. What does that say about dealing with Israel? Israel needs to realize that this moment has encouraged its victims to rethink the notion that Israel is invincible.

all sides are killers
I think some people should read more history. israelis always play the victims, but both sides are killers. How many palestinian and lebaneses children were killed by israeli snipers in cold blood? But no one talk about them. Israeli "setlers" in the west bank had killed many palestinian civilians and just a few were brought to justice. But the real price was paid by the 1.200 lebanese and 160 israelis as a result of the 2006 war. They were killed by the their leaders, who prefer war.

Don't people see that they are Hizbollah is exchanging 2 Israeli soldiers with 200 dead Lebnese? This exchange has to be in terms what has been achieved by Israel off the 2006 offensive against innocent Lebanese civilian in the name of attcking Hizbollah. These were those 2 soldiers for whicha war broke out. That Israel for sure lost today.

I am Australia born muslim with Lebanese parents. I dont find joy in seeing dead on either side. Hopefully this might lead to positive gestures by Israel and its Arab neighbours. In Islam you are not allowed to kill anyone without a valid reason. Allah knows best.

I can't believe they let this murderer free! As much as I hated the brief yet tragic war in 2006 this is not the end of the bitter feeling between Isreal and Lebanon. I love both countries and have friends of both nations. Is there any way the whole thing can be resolved?

Hizbollah prisoner swap
Plenty of 4 yeard old girls dying in Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq too. No one seems to bother about that. What does other religious books say about that? Quran does not say to kill innocents, only those who stand against Muslims. And that is a standard code of war everywhere.

Celebrating Kuntar
Lebanese, Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims who celebrate a child murderer as a hero... Israel did this, Israel did that... So, what if Israel is wrong? There are no excuses for making a child murderer a hero. What does it say about you who celebrate such a man?

IDF statement reflects Jewish/Israeli values: Wednesday afternoon (Israel time), July 16, 2008, update: IDF statement about the identification of the fallen soldiers, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev: "This painful process exemplifies Israel's moral commitment to secure the return of all of their soldiers sent out on operational missions. It demonstrates a compelling moral strength which stems from Judaism, Israeli societal values and from the Spirit of the IDF."

Freedom Fighters
1. In 2006 Israel wasnt inside Lebanon hence the phrase "Freedom Fighters" does not fit here. 2. In my personal view, there are many ways to get freedom other than Terror. 3. Independant nationts (not like Syria and Lebanon) have found a way to talk to Israel directly and achived a peace agreement. 4. We love our childrens, we fear for our life, we cry when we are sad, we Question our leaders and grief our deads but we have never lost a war... dont try us.

Celebrations? - For what?
More then 1000 Lebanese killed, vast destruction in Lebanon. What exactly is the gain? - A civilian and his kid's murderer released? Hezbollah have a lot to explain to the Lebanese.

Are these your heros Labanon?
I do not believe there is realy a single lebanese or a single Arab or a single human being who truely thinks that kuntar is a hero. How come the president of lebanon will shakw the dirty hands of such a man? Doesn't lebanon has even a bit of self or human dignity? Aren't you afraid that such people will walk free in your streets? Will you let such a man play with your own 4 year old girl? He had crushed the litle girls head but was too scared for his own skin. Are these your heros Lebanon?

Prisoner Swap
To say that either has reason to celebrate is lunacy. This is procedural after a war, you get your dead back. Their is no joy in that. If you are lucky, you get prisoners that are alive, their family can celebrate a reunion. The war was fought in 2006, you can't "win" it now with rhetoric or posturing. Please put your energy towards peace.

Kuntar
Every Israeli soldier is an accomplice in mudering not one child, but tens of thousands of Arab & Muslim children. Why is their blood any cheaper??!! Samir Quntar gave one example of what the Israeli military does to palestinian & lebanese children EVERY DAY! And BTW, Quntar denies the charge of killing the little girl. He was convicted by an occupation force which has wiped an entire country off the map, during a time when the SAME occupation force invaded another!
