Freed prisoner vows to fight Israel

Samir Kuntar, one of five Lebanese prisoners released by Israel as part of an exchange deal with Hezbollah, has said he had no regrets over his imprisonment in 1979 for the murder of three Israelis.

Kuntar, a Lebanese Druze, returned to his home town of Abeih, southeast of the capital Beirut, where politicians from both sides of Lebanon's political divide greeted him.

As Kuntar received a hero's welcome in Lebanon on Thursday, Israel buried the remains of two soldiers returned as part of the deal with Hezbollah.

Thousands of people attended the funerals for Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, who were captured during a cross-border raid which sparked a 34-day conflict between Israel and the Lebanese movement.

The four men released with Kuntar were captured during that war in 2006.

'No regrets'

Kuntar was convicted and sentenced to five life terms for killing a police officer, a civilian and a four-year-old child in a raid in the northern Israeli town of Nahariya.

But on Thursday he told the crowds that came out to welcome to his home town: "I haven't for even one day regretted what I did.

"On the contrary I remain committed to my political convictions," Kuntar said.

"I feel enormous joy because I have returned to the ranks of the resistance and to my family."

Kuntar's family says that he did not commit any of the murders and that the victims were killed in crossfire during a shootout with Israeli security forces trying to apprehend Kuntar and other members of his group.

Walid Jumblatt, a leading member of the pro-government camp, and Talal Arslan, a Druze member of the opposition, as well as Mohamed Fneish, the labour minister, took part in the ceremonies in Abeih.

Israeli condemnation

Ehud Olmert, Israel's prime minister, on Thursday labelled Kuntar an "animal" for the crimes he was convicted of carrying out.

"Woe betide the people who celebrate the release of a beastly man who bludgeoned the skull of a four-year-old toddler," he said in a statement.

But Mohamed al-Sayed Said from the Al-Ahram Centre for Strategic Studies in Cairo, said Olmert "should not take the moral high ground" with respect to what he sees as the "destructive effect" of the 2006 war.

"I don't think Olmert has any right to declare moral victory. While he may call Kuntar an animal, the war that he launched in 2006 resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 people," he told Al Jazeera.

"The whole world saw and continues to see how destructive it was."

Mostly of the Lebanese victims of the conflict were civilians, and about one-third of them were children. About 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers, were also killed.

Soldiers pledge

Al Jazeera's David Chater, reporting from Goldwasser's funeral in Nahariya, said that the Israeli government had reiterated its pledge to bring home missing or dead soldiers.

"Ehud Barak [Israel's defence minister] made a big promise that Israel would do anything to get any of their soldiers back again," he said.

"He said that efforts would not cease to get back Gilad Shalit [an Israeli soldier] from the Gaza Strip ... and that Israel would continue efforts to look for Ron Arad, a missing Israeli air force navigator who disappeared when his plane crashed in Lebanon in 1986."

Goldwasser's coffin, draped in the blue and white Israeli flag, was carried to the graveside by his comrades from the elite Golani infantry brigade.

Regev was buried at cemetery in Haifa later in the afternoon with members of the Shalit family among the several hundred mourners.

Chater also said that Israel had acknowledged that Hezbollah had got the best of the latest deal.

"There is a lot of thought going on. A committee is being prepared by the Israeli government so that some kind of rule can be set for prisoner exchanges," he said.

Hezbollah also received the bodies of almost 200 Lebanese and Palestinian fighters from Israel.

On Thursday, the coffins containing the remains were driven from south Lebanon to Beirut on the backs of eight lorries. Crowds of supporters showered the convoy with rice and rose petals as they made the journey.

The coffins were taken to a Hezbollah educational complex near Beirut airport where forensics experts will carry out DNA tests in an attempt to identify the bodies.

Samir Kuntar
Take a good look at Samir Kuntar! That is the face of a very ill person. It's better for him to die outside of Israel then in a jail cell where Israel can be blamed for his death.

No one here knows for sure if Kuntar killed those three people in cold blood or if they were killed in crossfire while he was defending himself. The Irsaeli govt cannot be trusted any more than the White House can. The fact of the matter is that Israel has thousands of political prisoners who's only crime has been to resist their regime. No one but Kuntar and the Israeli officials know what really happened. Anyone else who says they do are lying...

Cold Blooded murderer?
Kuntar is hardly a hero, in fact killing a 4 year old girl is unacceptable by any standards. But overseeing wat Israel does to Palestinians. Shame on you all for having a one sided opinion. What about the babies, infants, kids that the 'Heroic" Israeli soldiers kill? And yet, America see the devillish Israeli soldiers as heroes? Double standards again!!!

Prisoners Swap
I hope the exchange of victims will be the beginning of more toward reconciliation. The event proved failure of military solution and engotiation is the only civilized way to resolve disputes.

Kuntar
Eitan Haran's brain tissue was found on Kuntar's gun. The issue with Israel is not "occupation." The issue is Israel's right to exist. Hezbollah started the last war and brought ruin to Lebanon.

While the history between the Arab world and Israel is full of claim and counter claim, lets not forget who initiated this last episode of war between Hezbollah and Israel. Lets not forget that the ultimately futile act of Israeli retaliation was brought on by Hezbollah’s repeated shelling of northern Israeli border towns. Worrying indeed how simple facts become skewed after only 2 years. Another myth is born!

The heroes
Greeting a cold blood murderer of a four-year girl as a hero - shame on you, Lebanon. In the primitive festivities, nobody mentioned the 200 bodies returned to Lebanon... 200 families that nobody cares about... This exercise caused Lebanon 1200 deads, thousands of wounded, $5Billion losses, 20 year backwards. All that while Israel is blooming, it's economy has never been better, people enjoy their lives in democracy, advanced hi-tech and much more. So this is the "eternal victory".

Freedom fighter Creed
It's good to know that he have not come home to be a traitor like Nelson Mandela who never understood the power of resistance. The Afrikaners tortured, whined and dined him to break the movement and that is why the people still have a symbolic black president and the whites have control of the land, enconomy, wealth and military. This is exactly what's happening in America today with the hype over Barrack Obama. You see the body, but the money and minds behind the campaign is the enemy of blacks.

Israel should think twice before talking about moral...!
Israel troops are killing innocent Palstenian civilians on daily bases. The world will not forget what they've done during the Gaza incursion which their troops killed days old baby, and cold blooded and continued to systematically kill the innocent through unjustifiable seige on the sefocated Gaza strip. It's closing the charity institutions in the West Bank whcih has nothing to do with Hamas or any poletical factions...Then how they dare saying Kuntar is "Animal" forgetting there barbaric act

Congratulations!!!
A heartfelt warm welcome to all the heroic freed prisoners of Lebanon. This is a great victory for the Islamic resistance in Lebanon and is a lesson for all Arab nations. God willing, the 11,500 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention will be freed in a similar fashion. The demise of the Zionist entity is near and this is just the beginning of something much greater. The eternal victory we crave so much is not wealth and oppression of the weak, but living with honour and dignity.
