Brown raises settlements at Knesset
Brown said Israeli settlements were hampering the peace process [AFP]

Gordon Brown, the British prime minister has urged the Israeli parliament to consider making Jerusalem a capital of both a Palestinian and Israeli state, and to stop building settlements on Palestinian land.

In the first speech to the Israeli Knesset by a British prime minister, Brown also promised more aid to help revive the Palestinian economy.

Criticising Israel's move to continue building settlements, he said that the EU as a whole is clear about wanting a freeze.

He also told the parliament on Monday that Britain would continue to lead the West's efforts to stop Iran's nuclear programme and that the Iranian president's comments calling for the end of Israel were "abhorrent".

Settlement freeze

Brown struck a positive note in his address, saying an historic peace with the Palestinians was within Israel's grasp, describing the current leadership of the Palestinian authority as the best partner Israel has had for peace in a generation.

Al Jazeera correspondent David Chater said it was clear that "this was a speech from Brown’s heart as well as his head".

The key issues he touched upon regarding Palestinians were his plea to envision Jerusalem as the capital of both states of a two–state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and to end Israeli settlement-building.

The right of return of Palestinian refugees, another divisive issue, was not mentioned.

"The place is as important as the words," Chater said.

"He is a prime minister that knows full well the complexities of issues here.

"As the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said, the expansion of settlements and outposts are the biggest obstacle to peace," Chater said.

"This is the first time a British prime minister actually mentioned the settlements. He didn't over emphasise it, but it was there."

Iran warning

Brown, on his first visit to Israel and the Palestinian-controlled territories since he took office last year, also warned Iran on Monday that it will face growing isolation if it rejects an offer from major powers on its disputed nuclear programme.

Brown pledged to stand by Israel and condemn threats against the country by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president.

"Just as we have led the work on three mandatory sanctions resolutions of the United Nations, the UK will continue to lead, and our European Union partners, in our determination to prevent an Iranian nuclear weapons programme," Brown said.

The US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China have offered Iran financial and diplomatic incentives to halt nuclear activity which the West fears is a cover for making bombs. Tehran says it is aimed solely at generating electricity.

After talks in Geneva ended in stalemate on Saturday, the six powers gave Iran two weeks to answer calls to rein in its nuclear activities or face tougher sanctions.

British government officials travelling with Brown said if Iran did not accept the incentives, the next step would be to increase sanctions against Tehran, possibly
including sanctions on Iran's oil and gas industry.

They said such sanctions could seek to target Iran's domestic energy market by making it difficult for Iran to obtain equipment and spare parts for its refineries.

Re: settlements
I completely agree. Israel should be facing international sanctions if it doesn't start dismantling the settlements (not to mention the wall).

Settlements and the future
I think am a minority here, but we are beyond two states resolution. The settlements and the changes in Jerusalem make that option impractical. You got hundreds of thousand of settlers in these settlements. What are you going to do with them? Now, it’s time to talk about one state. What do you call it?? It’s irrelevant

All talk and no action...
All these heads-of-state merely 'talk' about settlement dismantling, however it will be a cold day in Hell before any of them impose any sort of economic sanctions on Israel, the way they would on Iran. Quite frankly, Israel's settlement expansion is more detrimental to the West's "Middle East peace process" than Iran's quest for nuclear power, given the nature of the Iranians quest for electric advancement, and the Israelis quest for angering Palestinians by land-grabbing.

Settlements are more than counter-productive
One could say that armed car-jacking is counterproductive, or one could call it what it is. Forcibly taking what doesn't belong to you is armed robbery. Palestinian lands are being taken from them by force with the assistance of the Israeli military. It is theft, in violation of international law and in violation of the Geneva Convention. Counterproductive is far too mild a description.

Brown raises settlements
Jolly good effort on Mr Browns part, but until the other leaders of the world (read: USA) unite in condemnation of Israeli expansionism at the cost of international polarisation, then we will suffer as a species rather than a race, creed, or indeed religion. Anyway, what happened to Mr Blair the great Mideast Messiah? Maybe he's in rehab?

The British had their chance back in the 30s and 40s to implement a smooth transition from British rule to a 2 state solution. They failed to do so and ran from Palestine with their tails between their legs. A decade of Zionist terrorism, led by figures such as David Ben Gurion, Israel's first prime minister, sapped the British of their resolve. Why would Israel listen to the British now when the Zionist militias kicked the British out more than 60 years ago?

Actions required not speeches
Mr Brown & EU needs actions to control Israel rather than speeches in parliament. There should be honesty and justice towards the opressed and towards the opressors.

Western leaders
Note the wording "urged the Israeli parliament to consider making Jerusalem a capital of both a Palestinian and Israeli state, and to stop building settlements on Palestinian land." Have you guys ever wondered the type of indulgent language used by Western leaders when dealing with Israel. Only 'urge' and 'consider' are deemed necessary. Against Arab and Muslim countries it is always 'do it' or ' last chance' or 'gain the respect of international community' etc.

Brown raises settlements at Knesset
Brown sounded too weak and was subject to the Zionists' flattery. He had no muscle to be explicit that Israel should give up its agenda of Attacking Iran when it has nukes upto its teeth at Dimona. He does not want to lose as a PM of UK, does he? Shame on him!

Peace Process
Alow Apalestinians to live in the settlements - this helps solve the right of return issue. Make Jerusales the capital of Palestine and Israel. The 2 state solution is Gaza and Israel/Palestine.

stop sanctions
All know that Iran neuclear establishments can not be used for enrichment required fror making bombs. Please stop sanctions and the best way is to negotiate Iran since it is a relatively large oil producer and an effective country in midle east

Settlements
This is exactly what has been needed. Countries telling Israel that settlements are counterproductive. I would like to see sanctions until they stop and dismantle settlements.

Insult to Iran
To tell Iran what to do while addressing the Knesset is an insult to all Iranians, government and citizens. How dare you tell us what we can or can not do? Standing in the middle of a country that has a nuclear arsenal and whom Brown has never questioned about their nuclear arms he tells a country what they can do? As an Iranian I tell Brown mind your own business and try and keep your masters happy in other ways.

occupation
During the second world war, when Germany invaded France-they were called invaders. Those who were occupied and opposed the invaders were called the resistance. In Afghanistan the invaders are called liberators and the resistance is now the insurgents. How times change...

Brown raises settlements at Knesset
Gordon Brown, the British prime minister has made some healing statements toward a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian future. Yet, he also along with the western world make an equal effort to disarm Israel's nuclear program with sanctions inorder to show impartiality and fairness within the eyes of the world. Otherwise his words are meaningless!

Gordon Brown
Brown has no mandate from the British people to give support to Israel or to threaten Iran. He is showing all the signs of being lapdog to America as was Tony Blair.

Traitors to the Arab nation
Contrary to the US, the foreign policy of the UK needs always to be seen from a dual point of view. When they say that they are helping someone, we must look for who are they betraying in the process. For instance, when they appear to be complaining against illegal Jewish settlements, in reality the Brits are giving 100 % reassurance to the Israeli government that they encourage and support a war against Iran. In fact they are not giving to the Arabs anything since the whole Israel is an illegal

Settlements and the walls of apartheid
While Brown deserves credit for his speech today, the Israeil government is building meter after meter of walls around and between Palestine. When will the U.S. hold Isreal accountable for the oppression of the Palestinians? Or, at least, when will it stop funding and facilitating it?

Brown raises settlements at the Kenesset
It is about time someone from the quartet tells Israel that its behavior in building settlements is seen as impediment to peace. The U.S. cannot do this and is seen as being bias in the Palestinian Israeli conflict. Let some other country try to broker peace. The British should do this and clean up the problem it created by createing a partition of the land.
