Bulldozer attack hits Jerusalem

Twenty people were wounded in the attack [AFP]

A driver of a construction vehicle has wounded 20 people after going on a rampage in west Jerusalem, before he was shot dead.

The driver rammed into cars and a city bus in the Jewish area of the city on Tuesday, police said.

The attack was the second such incident in west Jerusalem in three weeks. Three weeks ago, a similar attack took place in Jerusalem and left four people dead.

The Palestinian attacker smashed into vehicles and pedestrians before being shot and killed.

A police spokesperson said: "The bulldozer driver left a construction site, and hit two cars.

"A civilian who saw what was happening shot him."

Copycat incident

Police identified the perpetrator of Tuesday's attack as Ghassan Abu Teir, a Palestinian resident of occupied east Jerusalem.

Al Jazeera's David Chater, reporting from Jerusalem, said that according to police, the assailant had a criminal record.

"This attack was very similar to the one carried out three weeks ago, and has stirred debate as to how the authorities here should respond to such incidents. There have been calls to demolish this man's house, but people are asking whether it is right to punish the family of this 22-year-old man," he said.

While Abu Teir was not known to be part of a wider group, the Hamas movement based in the Gaza Strip labelled the attack as a "natural reaction to the crimes of the [Israeli] occupation".

However, Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, said he "condemned and rejected" the attack and said such incidents "hurt our reputation and peace in general".

commending the attacker?
Two of the feedbacks commend the attacker? There is simply no excuse for violence, regardless of ideology. When I'm asked by Arabs why the West takes issue with Islam and Middle Easterners, it is precisely this mind-set that comes to mind. No one with credibility will support grass-roots movements in the Middle East when racial violence is exalted.

Motivation
It seems odd to me that the question of motivation is raised about the Palestinian and his bulldozer. When did anybody discuss the motivation of Saddam Hussein or any other murderer of that ilk? I can admire soldiers and heartily abhor terrorists. Killing civilians with bulldozers comes into the latter category - without any doubt in my mind.

Bulldozer Attack
Frankly speaking I am amused by some of the feedback you are recieving. People seem to think this struggle is pitting the Muslims against the Jews. Truthfully this is a fight for land between Palestinians and Isrealians. Its a family fued between the children of Abraham. The rest of us should keep our noses out of it. This goes for the Americans as well.

Comments from many of ME talkbackers are just shameful
To all talkbackers saying 'brave Palestinian'or 'what drove this person?'etc. If even something drove him, then this terrorist decided to take revenge by killing some accidental civilians!Supporting this is a tribal morality.Muneeb, following your reasoning a soldier shooting into a feet of Palestinian might also be justified by the direct danger of losing lives the IDFsoldiers face in WB.Such reasoning just cannot go-a terror induces terror, which induces terror.Call things by names and be just!

What about Israeli bulldozers?
What makes a palestinian behave like that? Israeli bulldozers demolishing houses and killing palestinians almost every day? Shame on you.

civilians?
You can't be considered an innocent civilian when you're ex military, armed, and part of an orchestrated invasion/occupation. When you remove people from their homes, demolish their house, and live on their land, you are the aggressor, not the victim.

Please, try to understand: Israle does not want peace with palestinians
Come on, Yoni and Reza Santorini! It's pretty easy for you to call palestinians "terrorists" what about "Israeli apache helicopters" bombing palestinian villages? Is that good terrorirism? You surely believe that as you are totally alienated by your local TV. Israel does not want PEACE!!!!

When Christians kill Muslims it's a crusade. When Jews kill Muslims it's a massacre. When Muslims kill Muslims, Muslims shrug. When Muslims kill Christians or Jews, Muslims say they had it coming.

NOT a dozer
I would like to clarify that the machine shown on the cover page for this article is NOT a bulldozer, but a back-hoe. Not a big deal, but sort of makes the title of the article seem silly.

Irony
Not that violence of any sort is ever acceptable, but I hope the people of Israel will be able to appreciate the symbolic nature of the bulldozer, that many Palestinian lives that have been destroyed by Israeli bulldozers.

bulldozer attack
This attack was not the same as the last and there is nothing natural about it. The man who did this is a terrorist, the man who did the last was a man with an illness. If this man attack is let to go as simple lash back to Israel, all Muslims will suffer...even the ones who are Israelis and given citizenship. Why do terrorists want to punish those that want peace?

Just how BIG are these attacking tractors???
This has happened twice now. I like big equipment. Just how big does a tractor need to be to cause this kind of damage, and how come the tractors used are never shown? Is this information being hidden from us? I expect this from the BBC and US news agencies. I thought Al Jazeera might actually show pictures of the tractor. Even model numbers, etc. would be interesting. Thanks!

Bulldozer attack
Although I sympathise with the Palestinians in their plight and am vehemently opposed to the ISraeli occupation,I cannot condone these sort of attacks upon civilians.Does the perpetrator really think that he will change the Israeli policy through acts of mayhem? The Israeli fascists will increase the pressure on the palestinian civil population Hamas will gear up for more assaults and so the whole shabby story-a story without end,so it seems-will be continued.Hopeless.

why?
Eli Rabin, what drove this person to do this...maybe the shooting of a blindfolded man by a cowardly Israeli soldier?

First of all, the Palestinian was arrested as part of a violent demonstration against the anti-terrorist fence that Israel has built which has saved thousands of lives. Second of all, the soldier fired a rubber bullet toward his feet, and then end result was a swollen toe! Yet Israel is still investigating the incident and will punish those responsible. Get your facts straight.
