Obama vows support for Israel

Obama visited the town of Sderot, which has been struck by rockets fired from Gaza [AFP]

Barack Obama, the US Democratic presidential candidate, has said he backs Israel's decision not to negotiate with the Palestinian group Hamas.

Speaking in the Israeli town of Sderot, which has been hit by rocket attacks from Hamas-controlled Gaza, Obama said the US also supported Israel's right to defend itself "against those who threaten its people".

He also reiterated his position that Jerusalem "will be" the capital of Israel.

But the Illinois senator said that he believed the city to be a "final status issue" that must be decided by negotiation and said he remained committed to a two-state solution to the conflict.

Early on Thursday, Obama concluded his Middle East tour and left for Germany to begin a series of visits to European cities.

Iran 'threat'

The status of Jerusalem remains one of the most contentious parts of any solution to the Middle East conflict.

In June Obama caused anger in the Arab world when he said that Jerusalem should be Israel's undivided capital.

The international community, including the United States, does not recognise Israel's claim that Jerusalem is its undivided capital and Palestinians hope to have East Jerusalem, currently occupied by Israel, as the capital of any future Palestinian state.

Obama also said that he would take "no options off the table" with regards to Iran, saying the country posed a "grave threat".

In focus

In-depth coverage of US presidential election
"A nuclear Iran would be a game-changing situation, not just in the Middle East but around the world," Obama said.

The Illinois senator, who had earlier held talks with Palestinian leaders in the West Bank city of Ramallah,
said that if he was elected he would adopt a policy of "big sticks and big carrots" regarding the Iranian government.

"I would at my time and choosing be willing to meet with any leader if I thought it would promote the national security interest of the United States of America," he said.

Obama travelled from Jerusalem to the West Bank city on Wednesday for talks with Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, and Salam Fayyad, the prime minister, before heading to Sderot.

Saeb Erakat, a senior aide to Abbas told the AFP news agency that Obama told the Palestinian president that "if he wins the election in the United States he will be a full and positive partner in the peace process and will not lose a single moment in pursuing it".

Mustafa Barghouti, the secretary of the Palestinian Initiative, told Al Jazeera that as the candidate of change, Obama should also bring change to the Middle East.

"He cares a lot about the Jewish vote but it's time to care about the Arab vote and the Muslim vote.

"The whole stability of the Middle East depends on resolving the Palestinian issue."

Later Obama told Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, that he had an "unshakeable commitment to Israel's security".

Security was tight for Obama's West Bank visit, with helmeted riot police carrying truncheons and rifles lining the access road to the walled compound as he shook hands with an Abbas aide and then entered the building.

The Illinois senator's Middle East tour has been an attempt by the Democratic presidential candidate to bolster his foreign policy credentials ahead of the US's presidential election in November.

The visit is in contrast to John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, who did not visit the West Bank during his time in the region.

Some goodwill

Earlier on Wednesday, while meeting Shimon Peres, the Israeli president, Obama pledged that that as president he would preserve the close ties between the US and Israel, and that Israel's security would be a top priority in his administration.

Obama travelled to the West Bank, unlike his Republican rival John McCain [AFP]
"I'm here on this trip to reaffirm the special relationship between Israel and the United States and my abiding commitment to Israel's security and my hope that I can serve as an effective partner, whether as a US senator or as president," Obama said.

At Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, he laid a wreath, lit a memorial flame, and deemed the place to ultimately be "a place of hope".

He was also due to tour the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site.

Obama's visit in the West Bank has generated some goodwill, particularly since his Republican rival, John McCain, did not visit the Palestinians during a Middle East trip earlier in the summer.

Nour Odeh, Al Jazeera's corrrespondent in Ramallah, said: "The Bush administration only began to be engaged in the Middle East peace process in November 2007 at Annapolis. That peace process is yet to yield any results and is not expected to conclude with a Palestinian state - as promised - at the end of 2008.

"There were a lot of Palestinian frustrations right before Barack Obama came to Ramallah ... but keep in mind that this visit to the West Bank town is only for 45 minutes. Obama is keeping the better part of his day visiting Israeli officials and concentrating on the very important Jewish vote in the US".

Obama Israel Trip
No surprises there. Did anyone think that he went there for any reason other than to pledge allegiance to Israel. Did you see how those Israeli officials were grinning and gloating in the backround. Obama's worst performance. What a shame.

Re: Obama backs Israel?
Palestinian leaders need to adhere to international law? By far the biggest violator of international law in the entire world is Israel: extrajudicial assassinations, routine torture, building a wall on someone else's land, attempting to annex territory acquired by war, transferring its civilian population to occupied territory, using human shields, firing artillery into civilian neighborhoods, denying Palestinians the right to freedom of movement...the list goes on.

World & US leader?
It continues to baffle me how US leaders continue to refuse to hold talks with Hamas. How else can the conflict be stopped than by engaging ALL involved? Its sad how winning votes surpasses doing the job properly.

Obama backs Israel?
In response to Mahmood's comment: It's funny you should mention international law, basic human rights, and to a greater extent, the United Nations Security Council resolutions condemning Israeli atrocities and war crimes against helpless Palestinians and other neighboring countries...Israel has not and will never adhere to any of those humanitarian standards so long as biased Israeli support in the US and on the International arena continues. It's a shame that Obama supports such monsters...

Obama's "support" for Israel amounts to a slavish denial that such a thing as Palestinian history even exists. It seems that Israel is licensed to break international law at every turn, building new settlements illegally on land that does not belong to them. Nothing changes, inclduing the suffering of a nation that was once called Palestine.

Just Taqiyya from Obama
Nothing to worry about, I'm sure all the leaders of Islamic nations already got the secret memo that his public backing of Israel is just the latest taqiyya. The Middle-East will fake some outrage to make it look believable.

"E"s comment
"a nation called Palestine"??? There never was a nation called Palestine - ever! There might have been if there was no war in 1948 and the Arabs acceptied patition, and there yet might be one if the Palestinian leadership cared more for their people and less about hating Jews and Israel.

change?
dont judge a man by his words, judge him by his action. am still optimistic that once obama is crown, he will fulfil his promise change. with regard to zion and pals conflict, at very least adopt complete neutrality. am not saying abandon the zions landgrabber because its unfair, whom they going to ask help when no more aparthied regime left in this world.

Obama backs Israel?
If Obama is backing Israel in unprecedentedly stronger way than which 'change' is he talking about? This change that he will make Jerusalem 'undivided' capital of Israel? Something that even US itself doesn't recognize! Obama came out favorite because he talked about some 'change' but I am afraid to say that he, too, is one of those blind Zionist supporter not interested in any peace in Middle East.

Everyone should know that Obama was in Israel to ask for permission to be the next president of the U.S. If he cares about the world peace and poverty he could have visited some poor tiny country like The Gambia or even Guatemala to assure them that he will help them when he becomes president next year. But not surprisingly he had to be forced to wear a skullcap, blue and white tie and pray at the Wailing Wall. So Muslims do not expect a lot from him

Moderating comment
I believe Al Jazaeera should moderatethe comments posted on this website. I have found countless comments which are offensive to me as an Arab and as a Palestinian. I believed that Al Jazeera was supposed to give us a voice. Instead I see it becomming more and more like the BBC. Comments such as "Jordan is the Palestinian Homeland" and pro-Israelis who use the word Palestinian in quotations marks! The BBC would NEVER allow any comments which would offend Jews!

Obama's "change " is a myth. His disregard for international law in recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel effectively rules him out as an honest broker. He has identified himself so closely with Israel as to negate any possible advantages his roots may have given him amongst the Arabs Much as I hate to say it I would rather have McCain as President rather than Obama . He was somebody I had fervently supported till I heard him grovelling to the IAPC

I disagree with the way western powers shaped nations in the middle east, but I believe that thousands of likeminded people deserve a homeland to cultivate and formulate their lifestyle properly. It isn't without education, and an open mind that we make can these transitions into a peaceful world. I am proud of the steps my presidential nominee has taken towards peace in the middle east. I hope the regional officials can overcome their disagreements so that Obama can focus on ours (The US).

i don't think that obama as he says he would end iraq war. anyone who buy's that is fooling him self. america went to iraq for the sake of isreal and to make money.this a war that would go on for decades until there enough profit made. america wouldn't spend billions if she knew iraq's occupation would end soon. infact i am 95% sure that he would attack iran. this is another lier with false hope out to fool americans again.

Obama Backs Israel
Did someone really accuse Israel of using human shields? If that isn't the pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what it is. Video shows Palestinians launching Ketusha's from the roofs of civilian buildings and right next to areas where women and children live. They know full well these areas will be attacked. There will never be peace until Palestinians ACCEPT ISRAEL'S RIGHT TO EXIST. Until then, Israel has no choice but to defend itself.

I think it's really sad that conversations about this conflict always degenerate into hateful banter. There are no innocents in this conflict. Murder is murder. Both sides are wrong and have committed horrible atrocities. The US is wrong for supporting Israel, we should stay out of this, end financial and military support and only involve ourselves in helping with the peace process. It's a pipe dream but would be just. Hopefully Obama is just saying what he needs to get elected, then seek justice

Re: Obama spent more time in Jordan
Actually, Jordan is the Jordanian homeland. "Palestinian" comes from the word "Palestine". That's why the International Court of Justice calls Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, "Occupied Palestinian Territories" (OPT). Surely it doesn't take a wealth of intelligence to figure that out...

extrajudicial assassinations, routine torture, human shields
Mr. French, those behaviors are common to Hamas and Hezbollah, but you don't seem to notice. As for firing artillery into civilian neighborhoods, why don't you notice that Hamas and Hezbollah fire their rockets from areas in and next to civilian neighborhoods, which draws Israeli artillery fire to civilian areas. It's Hamas and Hezbollah that cause the danger. As for building a wall & restricting the movements of Palestinians, those are defensive actions necessitated by Pal. violence.

Funny statement coming from a Canadian. The seed of an "Economic Contrivance" why doesn't your country welcome the Zionists, god knows you have the extra land, you can't miss it on a map (plus they'd be closer to there supporters) Palestine exists in the hearts of the Palestinian people. fact is, israel was CREATED in 1948. the majority of jews are from EUROPE and not the middle east. youcan palestinians for wanting the right to be alive and they will use ANY MEANS NECESSARY (heard that before?). israel is a military power and still gets funds from the US. if Palestinians had the same weapons, they would not need to resort to extreme measures to survive.

Why do they always say that Israel has a right to defend itself against attacks? It's always self defense for Israel and acts of terrorism from others. When one fights with the best weapons available and the other side fights with homemade weapons and rocks..........I don't understand how they just turn a blind eye. It's a sad state the world is in.

Needless to say, a "Kennedy like" would be, american candidate is always good news for everyone. But this time, I think we just cant buy it anymore. Israel has always been and will always be an utopia and a terror generator. Mr. Obama, through his clearly visible ignorance has demonstrated, once again, the amazing capacity of americans to deny anything that they dont understand and to give their avail to anything that could bring them a few bucks.

Obama in Israel
Yes, the US supports Israel on many points. If you want to believe they do this because the Jews are so powerful, I'd like to know where or how, outside of Israel, where they have this power. Do they control the oil industry, which is pretty much the basis of the world economy. Maybe they do it by numbers and Obama needs the Jewish votes at all costs. He can sacrifice the rest of the people to get those Jew votes. Everyone in the US votes to appease Jews.
