Boats reach Gaza despite blockade

Two vessels spent 30-hours journeying to the Gaza Strip from Cyprus [AFP]

Two vessels carrying 46 international human rights activists have reached the Gaza Strip, despite Israel's strict 14-month siege of the Palestinian territory.

The end of the mission to symbolically break the siege came after Israel backed down from an earlier warning to the 'Free Gaza' protest group not to breach the blockade.

Al Jazeera's Ashraf Amritti in Gaza said: "The arrival of these two boats is a very symbolic gesture for the Palestinian cause, to end the siege, end the occupation.

In fact, those phrases are written across the peace boats which carry flags from more than 70 nationalities."

The boats set sail on Friday on a 370km voyage from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus carrying activists from 17 countries, including Israel, with the aim of drawing attention to Israel's blockade of Gaza and its affect on the people there.

The boats sailed through choppy waters into Gaza City's main port on Saturday, where they were greeted by thousands of people waving Palestinian flags, many of them sailing around the harbour in boats.

Unity call

Ismail Haniya, the Hamas leader and dismissed Palestinian prime minster, called on the world to follow the example of the international activists movement and "break the siege on Gaza".

"We deeply appreciate and salute the activists on the two boats", Haniya told Al Jazeera in a phone interview.

Haniya said that it was time for Egypt to reopen the Rafah crossing and end the siege once and for all.

Egypt reopened the crossing last January after Palestinians blew up part of the border barrier, allowing thousands to stock up on supplies from border towns.

Cairo sealed the crossing three days later under pressure from both the United States and the Israeli government, to "protect its own sovereignty."

Jibril al-Rjoub, a senior Fatah leader, also welcomed the "breach of the embargo", describing the international activists as "humanists".

"The two boats defiance the of the Israeli blockade is a glimmer of hope that could be an opening of an end of the siege", the former Palestinian security chief told Al Jazeera in an interview from the West Bank of Ramallah.

Rjoub called for both an immediate reconcilation between Fatah and Hamas to unite the efforts to restore national unity, and to forge ahead with efforts to alleviate Palestinian suffering.

'Overjoyed'

Local activists and charity workers had feared Israel's military would step in to prevent the activists from reaching their destination.

Andrew Mumcie, one of the activists on board one of the boats, told Al Jazeera he was "overjoyed" by their success in reaching Gaza's shore.

"Now we will go back to Cyprus and organise another trip," Mumcie said, adding the group would continue its activities until Israel's siege of Gaza was lifted.

Israel's foreign ministry said it had been closely monitoring the 21-metre-long "Free Gaza" and 18-metre-long "Liberty" boats after they left the Cypriot port of Larnaca.

Aviv Sharon, an Israeli foreign ministry spokesman, earlier said: "They want provocation at sea, but they won't get it.

"We know who the passengers are and what they are bringing with them, and so we have no problem letting them through."

'Death threats'

Sharon had said earlier in the day that "all options" were being considered to prevent the ships from entering embargoed waters.

Angela Godfrey-Goldstein, a Jerusalem-based spokeswoman for the Free Gaza Movement which organised the event, said the boats' communications systems had been attacked by "electronic piracy" earlier in the day.

The activists' group was comprised of people between 22 and 81, included students, lawyers, doctors, journalists and an online poker player, organisers said.

Mostly American and British, they included Lauren Booth, the sister-in-law of Tony Blair, the former British prime minister who is now a Middle East envoy.

Many of the activists said they had received death threats before they set sail, leading some to drop out.

Israel has tightened its blockade of Gaza since Hamas seized power in June 2007.

Protesters reach Gaza
SO wonderful that the two boats reached Gaza. Hopefully they are the first of MANY MORE. It is time to end the Israeli occupation. It is time for Israel to behave as any other country and be treated as any other country. It is time for the Palestinians to have every right and advantage that the Israeli's have.

Free Gaza boats
Fantastic effort to symbolically break this Israeli-imposed siege. The whole world should be ashamed for letting this collective punishment occur. This siege - a war crime, has not only been condoned by the world but actively participated in by Western government's calling themselves defenders of the free world - what hypocrisy!

Honour to the activists!!! Free Palestine - it is long overdue. Israel is NOT ABOVE INTERNATIONAL LAW. Gaza is the LARGEST CONCENTRATION CAMP IN THE WORLD Shame on humanity that it looks the other way to the longest human suffering in the past 60 years!!!!

Gaza protesters arrive in port.
Wonderful news. Now lets hope that Russia at least can also break the blockade. It is time Gaza was free to import and export. Ray Spring.

a hundred thousand congratulations!
This is a jubilant occasion! I never use the words "hero" or "heroic", but now I do: all who sail on both these ships are heroes and heroines, and they put to shame the governments of the world.

I hope these moves toward freeing Palastinians from Israeli persecution work. Israel never recognized the Democratically elected government Hamas Israel covers up and tries to hide its WMD and nuclear stockpiles, etc. then tries to come out as clean! Now get water, etc., to the West Bank and the rest of the Palastinians!

Gaza Blockade
Even though I do not agree with Hamas, I feel it is time for Israel to move forward with the peace process. As with all conflicts, all over the world, The only one's getting hurt are the very people who want only to live their lives in peace. The leaders of these revolts, like politicans, only get rich off of the peoples grief.

What wonderful news! I know that it has not been easy for the 46 men and women aboard these two boats. I wish them safe travels and continuing success as they bring attention to the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank to the World. Query, why is it that whenever the duly elected Hamas government is mentioned in the press it is always said that Hamas "seized power?" There was an election and Hamas won fair and square....

International group of clowns
It is funny and ennoying to see these clowns happy to fight Israel since Israel is a very nice adversory. They know - nothing is going to be done to them, nobody sinks their boats and they are free to say whatevere they want. Some of them need publicity, and some are naive enough to think that Islamic murderers in Gaza are not the same as their closest friends and allies exploring Muslims in Pakistan, Algeria, Lebanon, Somalia - I've only mention the last week events. Lousy clowns.

Break the Siege!
FANTASTIC! I just watched non-stop coverage on Al Jazeera of the arrival in Gaza. Congratulations to the wonderful international team! This must be the start of breaking the siege. Let boats come from Egypt. Open the Rafah crossing. Let small planes start flying in and out. FREE GAZA!

The Gaza Blockade
This is good news! The people in Gaza have suffered terribly because of the racist apartheid policies of Israel. The boats breaking the blockade is a sign that the world is fed up with what Israel is doing to the Palestinians. Here in Amerika the tail has been wagging the dog long enough. Support for the Zionist theocracy of Israel is collapsing among the Amerikan population Change is coming! If Israel hopes to survive, then it had better start treating the Palestinians as human beings.

its easyier to walk...
I don't understand, they couldn't come to Gaza through Egypt? why does the arabs country don't care bout the Palestinian? Is it possible that these is not a real aid, but just another cinical use of the terrorist against there own people??? Maybe Egypt is the country that these ppl need to fight for human rights and help for the ppl in Gaza???

To Nancy
I wholeheartedly agree. This action will assist in exposing the ruthless siege that is imposed by the Israelis on the Palestinians. A siege that, it should be added, is supported by hypocritical leaders of the Western world, notably USA. I was beginning to wonder, but you are proof that there are some sane people left in the US, willing to speak out on a gross injustice.

The seige of Gaza
It is now Egypt's turn to break the seige by opening Rafah crossing gate to Gazans. It is ashame that an Arabe country will co-operate with Israel in this unjustified blockade.

Now: do they also care for the rights of the Palestinian living under the Hamas regime? And how about the attacks on Shderot? And Gilad Shalit? indeed, the left has never been slow at jumping for the worst regimes on earth.

Israeli doing unto others
Israel today acts toward the boat LIBERTY like Britain acted toward the ship EXODUS. Jews then protested that the UK acted inhumanely, that it should "let its people go." Now the Jewish state acts inhumanely, keeping Arabs in a huge ghetto. Folks who condemn the Holocaust think nothing of Israel's mistreatment of Palestinians. The world lets Jews do unto Arabs what Germans did unto Jews. History repeats itself. Let there be more protests to stop Ashkenazis from becoming Nazis.

How long the so called democracy exporter will allow the execution of palestine people. This is slap on the face of the Arabs because it is there duty to rescue their brothers. May Allah help this group which did such a nice job to uphold the condition of Palestine people.

Thre cheers for FreeGaza & Liberty!
Re: Free Gaza and Liberty. The people on these boats are not pro-Israel nor are they pro-Palestinian. They are pro-people. Politics is the problem, not the solution. The governments involved are both extremist. The only solution lies in both sides giving up their extremist positions, in compromise which will benfit ALL the people, Israeli, Palestinians, and others, alike. And THAT is the point of Free Gaza and Liberty. That is the difference between humanitarianism and extremist politics.

Gaza Blockade
What Israel is doing to Palestinians in Gaza is no different than what Hitler did to Jews in Eastern Europe. They've got them in camps, ghettos without water, sanitation, limited food, schools and hospitals closed, without power, and are slowly starving the Gazans, who become ill or die daily due to disease, lack of healthcare, fresh water, fuel and food. The Israelis don't want the world to know they're acting worse than Hitler, and prevent our media in the US from showcasing their cruelty.

Peace Shmease
These "activists" have achieved a resounding "nothing". They should be made to stay in Gaza and live within a society governed by Hamas' values. Peace has been furthered - how? Israel smartly let them remain a nothing by letting them in. IF the $ s that such a venture went to feeding the hungry, schooling children in kindness or something signficant, they would deserve everyone's praise. Well done for achieving a big fat old Nothing. As far as furthering peace - peace shmease!

They came empty
The only thing the boat carried was the forty six activists and a few boxs of needed supplies. If they really cared, most of them should have stayed home and sent a boat filled with the basic needs of the Palestinian people.

did the boats bring peace?
The activist boats reaching Gazan shores may seem to some like an envoy of peace, but there is much more to be accomplished. However, the fact that foreign boats were able to get through such a tightly-controlled area is, I think, a sign that change is imminent. And nour, don't be so pessimistic about the activists bringing people instead of supplies. Which do you think would be more effective? A tiny boat bringing minuscule amounts of supplies or emmisaries of peace hoping for a better future?

no surprise
The ships making it to gaza is no surprise. There weren't enough palestinians in there to sink it. Israel has been opressing people for over 50 years but the muslims are the terrorists right? Wrong. The terrorists are the opressors and the supporters of the opressors because they support terrorism. Thanks

RE Tomcats comment
Tomcat, do you think that Israel would have allowed the protesters to breach the blockade if they were carrying one ounce of humaitarian aid destined for the Palestinians??? No in your life, not in mine... I can guarantee that Mossad had operatives amongst the protesters however. And more operatives on the docks waiting for their arrival.

Maybe Russia could sail one of their guided missle frigates into port and bring humanitarian aide and some man portable, surface to air systems, like the USA is doing in Georgia. Karma.

The symbolic breach of the siege in Gaza
My hat's off to the activists on the boat! Israeli persecuters of the Palestinians have a lot of humanity to learn from these people! It's time for Israel to stop presecuting Palestinians and it's time for Israeli authorities, who continuously commit nefarious war crimes before the eyes of the world without feeling no shame no remorse, to remember their humanity.

Israels Blockade Of Gaza
The Jews in general never let people around the world forget what the Nazi's had done to them during the 2nd world war. They are & have been doing the same things to the Palestinians since 1947.With Identity Cards, Restrictions on their movement and starving them of fuel and food also taking their land by illegal moves.
