Iran steadfast on nuclear programme

The Iranian leadership says it will not dismantle its nuclear programme [AP]

Iran has said it will not back down "one iota" with respect to the continuation of its nuclear programme.

Tehran has voiced defiance on the day of an informal deadline set by Western nations to halt its work.

The informal two-week deadline set on July 19 expired on August 2. The UN Security Council has already imposed three sets of sanctions on Iran over the issue.

The West accuses Iran of seeking to build nuclear weapons under cover of a civilian power programme. Tehran denies the charge.

Iran faces a fourth set of sanctions if it rejects incentives offered to it by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany to suspend its uranium enrichment and reprocessing programme.

Syrian alignment

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president, said: "In whichever negotiation we take part ... it is unequivocally with the view to the realisation of Iran's nuclear right and the Iranian nation would not retreat one iota from its rights."

He made the remark in a statement posted on the presidential website after talks with Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president.

Al-Assad visited Tehran a few weeks after he said in Paris he would respond to a request by Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, and use his good relations with the Islamic Republic to help resolve the nuclear stand-off.

The presidency website quoted al-Assad, on his third trip to Tehran since Ahmadinejad gained power in 2005, as saying that "Syria strongly stands by Iran and will not change its stance".

On the nuclear issue, al-Assad said: "We have told the Europeans that Syria believes that any country including Iran, and based on international treaties, has the right to enrich uranium and have a nuclear power plant."

Ali Reza Ronaghi, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Tehran, said that the Persian carpet, Iran's most famous export, could provide a guide to the country's approach to nuclear diplomacy.

He said: "Two weeks ago - at the conclusion of talks in Geneva - Saeed Jalili [the chief nuclear negotiator] said that diplomacy "is very precise work, in certain cases a very beautiful endeavour, and hopefully the end result, the final product, will be beautiful to behold."

"Like carpet-weaving - the process of negotiating Iran's nuclear future would move ahead in millimetres."

'Fails to win support'

Meanwhile, unnamed US officials on Friday claimed that Iran has failed to win support from non-aligned nations this week for lifting UN sanctions and removing the UN Security Council out of the dispute over its nuclear programme.

The US is not a member of the non-aligned group but learned of the negotiations from representatives of countries that are members, said officials who spoke to reporters at the State Department on condition of anonymity.

One US official said the conference, which operates on a consensus basis, had deadlocked on portions of a draft statement presented by Iran that demanded the removal of sanctions and dismissed UN authority as well as affirmed Iran's right to possess the entire nuclear fuel cycle, something world powers object to.

The official said that some members, notably Cuba, Belarus and Venezuela - who all have poor relations with the United States - spoke in favour of the Iranian draft, but other opposing countries prevailed in watering down the statement.

Copies of the draft and the final statement provided by the US officials, show the Iranians unsuccessfully tried to get approval for a paragraph that said "sanctions imposed on Iran for its nuclear programme are of a political nature and should be promptly removed".

That paragraph, which also said there is "no legal basis" for the UN Security Council to be involved in the issue, does not appear in the final statement.

After the final statement was adopted on Wednesday, Iranian officials said it was a victory.

Ali Ashgar Soltanieh, the country's senior representative to the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, said it sends a "strong positive signal that the only way is negotiation and dialogue" over the nuclear stand-off.

Here we go again with the double morals and standards. Israel has over 200 nuclear war heads. Response. Total silence and hush, hush. Iran has NOT A SINGLE ONE of such weapons. Response. Outrage, talk of therat to "world" peace.

Iran must continue with its nuclear policy. Giving in now will surely mean defeat in the future and will embolden the US to even more intolerable acts.

Even if Iran is destroyed in a possible aggression or attack by US or Israel .. it should be steadfast in it's claim to neuclear rights. At least in future history books - portrayal of US or Israel will be no less than that of Halagu Khan. And everyone knows what has become of once mighty Mongol empire....

Israels nukes
The reason nobody throws a fuss about Israel's nuclear weapons is that Israel does not threaten to use them on anyone. Iranians yell "Death to Israel! Death to America!" No wonder the world does not want Iran to have nuclear weapons. They will use them!

to greg..israel Nukes
Israel has used chemical weapons and cluster bombs in lebanon and will use nukes if they need to. The US does not threaten (just like your israel) and they have used them - twice. The answer is all existing nuclear weapns to be dismantled first before asking countries working on nuclear energy to stop

Peaceful Purpose?
If Iran is really honest about their nuclear programme being only for peaceful purposes, why won't they comply to IAEA or show their respect to the international community? We all want to live in peace and do not want to see conflicts between anyone. So if Iran really wants nuclear energy, they do it the right way. The US can be out of the picture if Iran is willing to show the international community that it has no hidden agendas.

Purpose of atom bomb
They say that if Iran has atom bomb it is likely to use it. This brings a simple question to mind. Are the atom boms made by Israel, U.S.A., or any other country for that matter, are for decorating their living rooms?

Iran
Well, I can see double standards, frankly if the US is dumb enough to start a war they should check their bank account, and the price of oil if they pick a fight. Secondly if Iran wants nukes let them have them, a second power in the middle east is needed. Israel should not ever have the final say in the middle east, and should not have total control over everything! Iran has enough missiles already to level Israel, so what is one nuke going to do?

Iran steadfast on nuclear programme?
The ones who clearly want to stop this Iran nuclear program are Arab countries. You know why, right?

Has Iran nuclear weapon? Is Iran so threatening for world?
NO!!! I do not know, but who wants to judge anyone else? Who will judge Izrael, France, North Corea or China for their nuclear programes. US and Izrael whant to provoke the war and they want to fix their might. Iran has gas reservoirs and they need them! People, let Iran live. This is only the political game from the side of US, Izrael and EU. They want to hide their own problems. If we want to judge Iran for nuclear program and to stop it, we need to start from our own coutries!!!!
