US embassy in Yemen bombed

The US embassy in Yemen was attacked
by two cars, witnesses said [AFP]

At least 16 people have been killed in an attack on the US embassy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa by a suicide bomber and armed fighters, the country's interior ministry has said.

A suicide bomber on Wednesday morning drove a car close to the embassy before detonating his explosives, witnesses said, leaving part of the building on fire.

Armed men then attacked the embassy from a second car, they said.

Six guards, four civilians and six attackers died in the assault, the interior ministry said.

A group called Islamic Jihad in Yemen has claimed responsibility for the attack and threatened to target the British, Emirati and Saudi embassies in Sanaa, reports say.

Police cordon

A vehicle was on fire on the road near the embassy compound's perimeter and police sealed off the area, witnesses said.

Roads leading to the embassy were closed after the attack.

Mohammed al-Qadi, a political columnist for the Yemen Times, told Al Jazeera: "The attack came at about 9.30 in the morning, when there were not so many people passing in the streets outside the US embassy.

"Otherwise, the casualties could have been a lot more."

US reaction

Washington accused al-Qaeda of being behind the attack.

"I think it is safe to say ... the attacks bear all the hallmarks of an al-Qaeda attack," Sean McCormack, the US state department spokesman, said.

George Bush, the US president, said the attack was a bid by extremists to drive the United States out of regions like the Middle East.

"This attack is a reminder that we are at war with extremists who would murder innocent people to achieve their ideological objectives," Bush said as he met with General David Petraeus, the former top US commander in Iraq.

"One objective of these extremists as they kill is to try to cause the United States to lose our nerve and to withdraw from regions of the world, and our message is - is that we want to help  governments survive the extremists, we want people to live normal lives," Bush said.

High alert

The US state department had in April ordered all non-essential diplomatic staff to leave the country after an attack on the embassy the previous month.

A residential compound used by US oil workers in Sanaa had also come under attack from rockets at that time.

The embassy called on Americans in Yemen to "exercise caution and take prudent security measures, including maintaining a high level of vigilance, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, keeping a low profile, varying times and routes for all travel".

There have been several attacks by fighters in Yemen in recent years.

US Embassy bombed
the US should stop throwing dust into the eyes of the international community. They (US) plan and execute these attacks against themselves so that they can enlist the sympathy of unsuspecting nations to promote their so-called war on terror and further their quest for world dominance. What a shame!!

Yemen Bombing
Lets blame the USA for a cowardly attack on innocent civilians by terrorists in Yemen. Such is the ignorance and hatred of the USA in the Muslim world. Time for the USA to leave all Muslim countries and let you kill each other.

Sad, Unfortunate, and Unnecessary
No one who is sane can say that this type of tactic is acceptable. It's deranged and only served to kill local citizens. However, America must also accept that it needs to realign and balance its policies in the Middle East. It needs to stop treating Israel with kid gloves and has to begin to treat Arabs with respect and dignity. This will lead to a deflation of the anger felt in the Middle 'East against America, restore its respect, and pull the carpet of support from under the terrorists.

those stupid and murderous actions may help Mc Cain and Palin win the US election. It won't get better, il will be worse ! People should think twice before murdering civilians to be a martyr. I don't think their God is going to thank them and welcome them in heaven.

Yemen attack
Maybe they were radicals aimed at disrupting diplomacy in Yemen and abroad. The US government is too large, clumsy and it's employees can't keep a secret to make 9/11 an "inside" job.

Weve seen this before
Doesn't this sound so much like the American Embassy bombings in Kenya and Sudan and the USS Cole incident before the 9/11, all of which were staged by the CIA? There is little doubt that this is also another false flag operation. It will help scare Yemeni government, make it support US more, while covering up other things and adding another gig on the list of islamist terrorist attacks, another mischief of their forever unbeaten (and nonexistent) enemy. Unfortunately these news influence public

Yemen - more innocents killed by ignorance
You cannot seriously believe the CIA staged this. Can you be that ignorant? As for the cowards that killed innocent civilians, you are nothing more than the scum we scrape from the soles of our shoes. Learn to bring yourself up out the situation you are in by educating youself and not listening to the radical fools that fill your head with lies and promises of greatness. It is always easier to point a finger at others and pass blame instead of fixing our own problems first.

Usually it happens
Whatever had happened in Sanaa isn't something unique, US bombing is not something to be wondered with. How many people do US soldiers kill everyday? I don't think whether US, wherever they are, they can leave in peace as Bush has turned his back on all muslims, and turned them as Al-Qaeda. No save place for You America unless or otherwise you change your foreign policy and learn how to leave with muslims.

US embassy bombed in Yemen
What a monstrous act, killing our Yemeni brothers and sisters in the name of their own religion. What kind of interpretation of Islam allows this? When are these murderous monsters going to drop the sword and try to fulfill their cause with a pen. Why are so many killings carried in the name of Islam, we truly have to examine our knowledge of our religion and why it strayed of course. We cannot keep saying that islam is a religion of peace when we let these monsters live amongst us.

Habibi Eray, You forgot about the CIA and MI-6 operations in Istanbul!! Certainly you are right - all people in the Middle East are very happy with their lives and their governments work perfectly. They have no reason to be upset, so these bombings must be organized by the CIA or some other devious organization (maybe Lehman Brothers?) I have been to Turkey many times - it is a truly nice and lovely country! That is why I am convinced that there is no PKK or other troublemakers - just CIA

I'm sorry, but I CANNOT believe that the United States would do such a thing. I have been taught all my life that others must be treated with respect and dignity, and that senseless violent acts can never help us acheive anything. And, By the Way, the Job of the CIA is to track the most dominant threat to the U.S. and analyze itand PROTECT the U.S. How does bombing the U.S. embassy help protect our country?

I would also like to hear some proof that the CIA did in fact stage these attacks. Since only the group Islamic Jihad has confessed to bombing the embassy, they are who I believe. And someone please tell me what are the hallmarks of Al-Qaida? I didn't know there wer any defining styes for crashing a plane into a building of blowing up an embassy with a car bomb.
