Arab driver held after Acre riots
Scores of cars and shops were damaged in four nights of rioting by Arab and Jewish youths [AFP]

Israeli police have arrested an Arab man who drove into a Jewish neighbourhood of the northern city of Acre on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur sparking four nights of riots.

"Tawfik Jamal was remanded in custody for three days for reckless endangerment and harming religious sensitivities," Micky Rosenfeld, a police spokesman, said on Tuesday.

Jamal was detained on Monday night, despite having apologised for what he said was a "mistake" when he appeared before parliament's interior committee the previous day.

A group of Jewish youths assaulted Jamal, accusing him of deliberately making noise and disrupting the sanctity of Yom Kippur, when most Israelis observe a religious ban on driving.

At least three people were injured in the nights that followed as groups of Arab and Jewish youths clashed with each other and police. Arab homes were torched, while more than 100 cars and 40 shops were damaged.

'Politically motivated'

Arab politicians said that the arrest was politically motivated and demanded Jamal immediate release.

"I am sure some Jews also drove on Yom Kippur. Will the police arrest them?" Abbas Zkoor, an Arab member of parliament from Acre, asked.

While Ahmad Tibi, another MP, said: "It is the first time anyone is arrested for harming religious sensitivities.

"Police caved in to pressure from the fascist right which demanded his arrest, demonstrating it is a Jewish, racist and idiotic police.

"I wonder if the Israeli government will in future arrest Jews who eat or drink in mixed cities during Ramadan," he said in reference to the Muslim month of fasting.

Arabs with Israeli citizenship, the descendants of those who remained when the Jewish state was created in 1948, make up about 20 per cent of the Israeli population.

The ancient port of Acre is populated by both Jews and Arabs who live in adjacent and some mixed neighbourhoods.

Acre riots
Mike makes a good point, I agree. Why were the Jewish Israelis who assaulted the Arab Israeli not locked up for the same reason he was: a lack of religious sensitivity. I think it’s reasonable to suggest that if Jews do not drive during Yom Kippur they shouldn’t assault people either. Were they not equally, if not more, in the wrong? Blatant hypocrisy I think. Doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Driving a car?! Surely that is classified as an act of terrorism. I'm so pleased there are rock throwing, house torching Israelis around to restore the order!

what ... ??
This was wrong!!! Religious sensitivities?!? This really an enforceable, written law? This was “bad manners” on the part of the driver, but certainly now worthy of all the destruction that it causes. I confess to be rather pro-Israeli but this their rioting and the arrest of this man is totally unjustified. Bunches of apologizes “should be given” but never will be.

Release him
Driving on Yom Kippur isn't illegal (though it may qualify as stupid if you go into Mea Sharim and similar neighborhods). This man did nothing illegal and has even apologized before a Knesset committee. Arrest, instead, anyone who threw a rock. Rioting is reckless endangerment and, on Yom Kippur, harmful to religious sensitivities. I hope Mr. Jamal is released very soon, as this is insanity.

Arab Held
When will the Israeli police start holding and prosecuting Israeli settlers in the West Bank that leave their settlements and go into the Palestinian controlled areas to murder innocent Palestinian civilians?

Whats the problem?
I don't see why you are all so upset, I mean it IS a *Jewish* state after all, and Arab Israelis are second class citizens, who do not enjoy the same rights as Jewish citizens. You're all reacting to this incident as if Israel is not a racist state - it is! Wake up!

Riots
What a bunch of jokers you all are. I will start by saying that all who rioted should be thrown in jail but its unfortunate that you are all so ignorant to the facts. The Arab driver drove through a religious area blasting his volume and screeching his tires. Imagine an Israeli setting up a BBQ in a Muslim town on ramadan. That is just asking for trouble. Also, the rioting was started by the arabs who spread rumors that an arab was killed. The Israelies responded later.
