Gazans plunged into darkness

Israel repeatedly closes the crossings into Gaza in response to rocket attacks [EPA]

Thousands of Gazans have been left without electricity following Israel's suspension of fuel shipments to the Hamas-controlled territory's only power plant.

The power station was shut down on Monday evening after Israel refused to restart deliveries, despite warnings that fuel supplies were almost exhausted.

Al Jazeera's Sherine Tadros, reporting from Gaza City, said there was an almost complete blackout across the territory, with ordinary Gazans likely to exhaust personal supplies of fuel very quickly.

The Israeli defence ministry closed the crossings last week after Palestinian fighters fired rockets into southern Israel.

Late on Monday, Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, revised his decision to keep the crossing completely sealed and authorised a "limited resumption" of supplies to the Gaza Strip.

The partial resumption of fuel shipments, expected to begin on Tuesday at 06:00 GMT, followed a request by Tony Blair, former UK prime minister and envoy of the Middle East Quartet - comprising the European Union, the US, Russia and the United Nations.

"The fuel supply will be resumed completely when rocket fire from the Gaza Strip has ceased," Barak said.

Hospital fuel fears

"Some of the smaller hospitals will start running out of fuel in the next 36 hours"

Sherine Tadros,
Al Jazeera's correspondent in Gaza

Aside from general supply problems, Tadros highlighted two areas of serious concern following the cut in power.

"The electricity supply affects the water pumps that deal with the sewage system here, and electricity is needed for hospitals," she said.

"Some of the smaller hospitals will start to running out of fuel in the next 36 hours - that's going to be the immediate concern."

However, Israel insisted the Strip was getting enough electricity from the Israeli and Egyptian grids to meet 75 per cent of demand. The foreign ministry accused Hamas of exploiting the situation for political gain.

"The cynical Hamas exploitation of the civilian population in Gaza is contemptible," a ministry statement said.

The European Commission, which funds fuel deliveries to Gaza's sole power plant, said it had been informed that the Israelis may authorise fuel shipments on Tuesday.

"The Israel liaison office with the Palestininan territories told us that the deliveries to the power station could resume tomorrow," an European Union spokeswoman said.

Israeli sources said, on condition of anonymity, that shipments would resume if no more rockets are fired into southern Israel.

'Collective punishment'

Gazans have been using blackmarket fuel smuggled into the territory to get by [AFP]
Kanan Obeid, a Gazan energy official, criticised the move as an example of "Israel's policy of collective punishment".

The Gaza City plant provides about a quarter of Gaza's electricity, while most of the rest comes over lines from Israel. Egypt also provides a small amount.

A network of tunnels linking Gaza to Egypt is known to be used by Gazans to bypass Israel's blockade of the territory and bring products - including some fuel - into the Strip.

Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting for Al Jazeera from Gaza, said while the trickle of unofficial supplies has enabled individuals to get by, it cannot be used to power "the critical infrastructure of Gaza".

"There's two reasons for that - the Egyptian quality of petrol isn't high enough to power the generator, but at the same time the generator is monitored by EU observers and they will not allow any blackmarket fuel to be used to generate electricity for Gazans," he said.

Peter Lerner, the co-ordinator of Israeli activities in the Palestinian territories, said: "We received a request [from the Palestinians] for deliveries of fuel to resume and we forwarded the request to the defence ministry in Tel Aviv."

Most of the fuel and gas supplies needed by the Gaza Strip usually goes through the Nahal Oz terminal between Israel and the Palestinian territory.

Press freedom 'violated'

The crossing closure has also prevented journalists from entering the strip for five days, something that has drawn protests from the Tel Aviv-based Foreign Press Association (FPA).

The FPA, which represents foreign reporters in Israel and the Palestinian territories, branded the Israeli-imposed restriction as "a serious violation of press freedom".

Israel repeatedly closes the crossings into Gaza, derailing the Gazan economy and putting the territory's citizens under pressure, in response to rockets fired from the Strip by Palestinian fighters.

Even as the crossings were closed, there were fresh calls for the largely stagnant peace process between the Israelis and the Palestinians to be revived.

The Middle East Quartet - which groups the EU, Russia, the UN and the US - held a meeting in Egypt on Sunday and called for peace talks to be carried forward.

What bothers me most is how both parties in this conflict create situations designed to draw sympathy from their various supporter countries Isreal collecting billions of dollers from the US on security fears that does not exist, and Hamas from from the Arab world. Enough already! It was not too long ago that the world reacted collectively to save the Jews from extermination camps run by Nazis today, Israel seem to have modified and modernized the same tactic against the Palestinians. Sad!

Gaza would have to be considered in the top ten category as primary candidate for "hell on earth." Gee thanks Israel. Your chilling apartheid cleansing of Palestine is an inspiration to any and all budding war criminals that wander our sorely plagued Planet Earth.

collective punishment
Right on Steve. By your logic, committing war crimes because someone elects a political party you don't like is the right thing to do. Some program! As for Richard. Gazans don't want sympathy, they want what they are entitled to. Health, security, commerce and education, not starvation under the boot of Israeli oppression and western indifference.

Israels illegal policy
What people keep forgetting is that Israel is an ILLEGAL COUNTRY settled on stolen land, a country that started off on the wrong foot will never end up on safe ground. Israel, or perhaps we should call it ‘isntreal’ is and always was a oppressive country, who have put us Palestinians through much torture and pain for fighting for our lands which were taken from us by force. What isreal did and always does is terrorism! Saudi Arabia should cut its petroleum supply to israel in return

The view from Ponca City OK
"They have 75% of their electricity" "When they stop firing rockets" "When Israel opens the border" Bah, humbug! All finger pointing. No one will have peace in the area until everyone on all sides become tired of the killing and maiming and children wailing for their mothers, Israeli and Arab alike, and sit down to -make- a peace.

John: I said Gazans expect compassion (eg. services, electricity, the things you mentioned) from Israelis. I did not say sympathy. This is because they know, as do all Arabs, that Israelis are the only real humanitarians in the region. By the way, I lived and studied in Canada for years and have come to understand how your national inferiority complex causes delusions about moral equivalency between Israel and Palestine, or the West and Arab World Generally. Get over yourself.

Please...find a resolution to this. The killing has to stop!

Sovereignty means responsibility
Can someone tell, why Hamas dug tunnel by the Israeli border during truce? To make peace with J's?Why Hamas rejected previously signed agreements in Oslo? Why they publicly retracted recognition of Isr.made by Arafat? Why they refused to change their chart publicly aiming at annihilation of Isr.?Why after Isr.left Gaza,Hamas started shooting qassams instead of proposing to sit and talk?Be responsible.

Reply to Ayub Inhumane Animals
I don't sleep well, not because of matters across the globe. I don't sleep well because there is a homeless person on my street, there is a classmate with only one meal to eat, and there are children in my community who get beat. Do you not sleep well because of them? Do you care about them? You may, but not as much as me, and I don't mind. Because I'll take care of them, they are my neighbors.- I hope you help those close to you too, Ayub. It is humane. It is humane to help ANYONE in need.

To Ayub
You are a pathetic bigot! I think your argument about the poor, suffering Palestinians would have more substance to it if they didn't spend so much of their resources on rockets and weapons. Both sides need to respect the humanity of the other. FYI - Obesity is a greater problem in the Gulf Arab countries than it is in the US (look it up). And I don't see them rushing to give up their oil wealth to send food to the Palestinians. They seem to sleep just fine.

Egypt abandoned and boycotted Gaza long before Israel did. Funny isn't it that Gazans expect more compassion from Israeli Jews than from Egyptian Arabs.

I am disgusted to see US taxpayers money go to Israel where is is used to create illegal settlements, support a criminal military occupation by a theocratic state, and prolong the suffering of the Pal estinian people.

Isreals genocide of Palestine
Apartheid walls, nuclear weapons, invasion of Lebanon, Golan, Gaza, West Bank, starvation, collective punishment, incarceration, disobeying UN resolutions, denial of Geneva Convention of Human Rights, establishing colonies on conquered lands. Isreali policies. Why does the US send this horrid nation any funds at all?

Sending Rockets into Israel caused this. Perhaps Hamas should try to stop the rockets. This is a political stunt, and has been done before. Don't forget that they still have 75% of their capacity.

Genocide also comes with reponsibility.
They didn't have to modify it. It's the exact same policy. That's your "program". Of course they voted for Hamas. They're ruled by a murderous state that's denying power and food to thousands of people. And since it's tabboo to criticize Israel, they're getting away with it. Someone has to do something, and Hamas is the only group I see truly steping up the plate. Palestinian suffering is the foundation of Israel's existance. Israel absoultley owes power and food to Palestine.

Lets examine the facts. 1) Israel is the occupying force and the victim. 2) Israel has applied an economic and military seize to Gaza, but, yet the Israelis are again the victim. Something is not adding up here.

A Little Perspective
.6% of dead Jews from Auschwitz> all dead Palestinians from the entire Al Aqsa Intifada. And more than half of the Palestinians were combatants. If you are sane then you'll see how saying "extermination", "war crimes", "cleansing", "genocide" to describe Israeli behavior is an insult to Jewish lives and human beings in general. The holocaust gave meaning to these words and you trivialize them. Israel has the moral high ground and none of your lies can change that.

Can we not see that the major impetuses for anti-Americanism is because we have consistently supported Israel. What Israel is doing is so blatantly terrifying, we need to push our Congress, Senate and new President to stop the US aid money now, or at least put some strings on it. A thought, why does the Israeli peace movement receive little to no international press?

I am sure that FOX news and other western broadcasters would NOT have given much prominence to this latest blockade and also to the recent deaths of innocent civilians in US bombings in Afghanistan and Pakistan. I guess that in the words of Madeline Albright, " it is all worth the price " and in the words of Donald Rumsfeld " collateral damage ", and this is from Israel the country that is proclaimed to be the most democratic in the Middle East. If this is democracy who needs it ?

Pushing the US Govt for Gaza
Even if the US' past deeds weren't enough, our self-anointed messianism in world affairs gives us a real responsibility for bridgebuilding, reconciliation and justice - so the call to push Congress, the Senate, and a (hopefully!) more open-hearted and real-world new President is very timely. US residents can visit Congress.Org, a site which helps us contact our elected reps from the White House on up, based on our Zip codes. So why can't we start to change the future, beginning now?
