Fuel-starved Gaza faces blackouts
Israel repeatedly closes the crossings into Gaza
in response to rocket attacks [AFP]

Citizens in the Gaza Strip are bracing for more electricity blackouts after Israel cut off fuel shipments to the territory's only power plant.

Israel has closed crossings into Gaza, making it likely that electricity would be completely cut off in the territory from about 1600 GMT, Palestinian officials said.

Israel's defence ministry closed the crossings on Sunday after Palestinian fighters fired rockets into southern Israel. No one was hurt in the attack.

"More than 30 per cent of the electricity supply in the Gaza Strip could not be guaranteed this evening," Jamal al-Kudari, head of a committee campaigning to end Israeli sanctions, said on Sunday.

"Our fuel reserves are on the verge of being exhausted."

The Gaza City plant provides about a quarter of Gaza's electricity, while most of the rest comes over lines from Israel. Egypt also provides a small amount.

Fuel needed

"Right now about a third of the Gaza Strip is being effected by these [power] outages," Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin, reported from Gaza.

"The situation is getting worse by the hour ... The power generating plant here in the Gaza Strip powers about a third of the homes, business and factories in the northern part of the Strip. We're talking about five hundred thousand people that as of 6.30pm local time [16:30 GMT] will be without power."

A network of tunnel linking Gaza to Egypt is known to be used by Gazans to bypass Israel's blockade of the territory and bring products, including some fuel, into the Strip.

"That is one way the Palestinians in Gaza have been able to get by," Mohyeldin said.

"But none of the fuel that comes through the tunnels can be used to power the critical infrastructure of Gaza. There's two reasons for that - the Egyptian quality of petrol isn't high enough to power the generator, but at the same time the generator is monitored by EU observers and they will not allow any blackmarket fuel to be used to generate electricity for Gazans."

Palestinian appeal

Peter Lerner, the co-ordinator of Israeli activities in the Palestinian territories, said: "We received a request [from the Palestinians] for deliveries of fuel to resume and we forwarded the request to the defence ministry in Tel Aviv."

The Israeli defence ministry has given no indication of when fuel supplies will be renewed.

Most of the fuel and gas supplies needed by the Gaza Strip usually goes through the Nahal Oz terminal between Israel and the Palestinian territory.

Israel repeatedly closes the crossings into Gaza, derailing the Gazan economy and putting the territory's citizens under pressure, in response to rockets fired from the Strip by Palestinian fighters.

Even as the crossings were closed, there were fresh calls for the largely stagnant peace process between the Israelis and the Palestinians to be revived.

The Middle East Quartet - which groups the EU, Russia, the UN and the US - held a meeting in Egypt on Sunday and called for peace talks to be carried forward.

Fuel-starved Gaza faces blackouts
The effects of occupation just like Iraq. Change must take place here soon. All sides here must change their leaders as none at the helm are doing a good job. They are all in it for their own gains and not the peoples.

well
The caption under the picture says it all - "Israel repeatedly closes the crossings into Gaza in response to rocket attacks!" Solution - stop the rockets = peace. If one side shows they can be trusted, they will be trusted :)

Fuel-starved Gaza
Sadeeq, The UN already lets the muslim world get away with numerous human rights abuses far worse than this and it is essentially a tool which focuses exclusively on Israel bashing. Why would you want Muslim countries to overthrow it - it's already their pawn?

blackout
I am so sorry for the people of Israel and Palestine. This back and forth fighting going on all their lives is very sad. No one on either side seems to realize that both have equal claim to land. No one on either side seems to understand that the "baggage" created over all these years of killing nearly makes it impossible to trust, negotiate, or find peace among each other. I wish you all could unite to protect your country of both heritages and both peoples. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE though!!

whos the REAL terrorist?
this is blindingly obvious. Israel is the REAL terrorist, yet HAMAS is being accused of being one. And the world is blinded by this, simply because everyone is afraid of Israel. Even the USA bows in prostation to this God-damn country...

its very simple... If hamas will stop the launching of the rockets at cities inside israel, fuel and goods will flow freely. I believe that israel's response is very moderate. i will take lack of fuel over rockets falling on my neighbors anyday....

Hypocracy
For 42 years the Arab world not only boycotted Israel but organized secondary boycotts.Israelis cannot visit most Arab countries because we are not allowed in. Hammas calls non-stop for a boycott of Israel. Hammas has breached the cease fire in the war that it has declared on Israel - and they come crying about our boycotting them. You rely on our humanitarian gestures and assume them to be rights? You want more humanitarian gestures - stop firing rockets - talk peace and release Gilad

Where is the Humanity?
Where is the Humanity? How do we stand by and let this happen. It seems the powers that be will not be happy until every last Palestinian child dies of starvation. And the U.S. does nothing but look the other way. Sad.

blackouts
Alex, don't you think the west have got away with their fair share of human rights abuses! 60 years of oppression by Israel and you expect Palestinians to do nothing and hope Israel give them freedom! that's never going to happen because firstly Israel are far from a peaceful and democratic country and secondly Israel want all of Palestinian land!

"palestinian" blockages
Firstly, "palestine" has never been an estalished State - Israel was, and praise God, is once again. Secondly, if the so called "palestinians" want to avoid blockades on fuel supplies, then stop firing rockets at the hand that feeds you! It's pretty simple.

1973 oil crisis reversed.
How interesting !?! Its the Arab Muslim countries which produces the oil, and its Israel which blocks the delivery of oil in Gaza. Looks like Israel in employing the 1973 oil crisis in reverse action.

Blackouts
Lets do the math. Rockets fired at Israel = 0 fuel. 0 rockets fired at Israel = fuel to run the power plant. Maybe Humas should return to the classroom for a refreasher course in basic math. If Palestinian were wise, they would take any peace deal that Israel gave them to get their state. Then in 15 or 20 years, they would go to the U.N. for their remaining requests. 95% of something is much better than 100% nothing.

There isn't enough fuel and money in Gaza for hospitals, food and basic needs. Yet there is enough money and fuel to make bombs and rockets. Just a question of priorities.
