Dozens die in Iraq blasts

Women and children were among the many casualties in the explosions [AFP]

At least 31 people have been killed and scores wounded in twin bombings in a market in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, security officials have said.

In one of the attacks, a bus full of young girls was hit as it was transporting them to school in the morning rush hour.

Defence and interior ministry officials said that a car bomb went off in Adhamiyah on Monday.

A suicide bomber then blew himself up among the crowd that had gathered around the blast scene.

"There was a huge explosion and before I went out to look another bomb went off," said Fadel Hussein, a waiter at a teahouse near the scene.

"Heavy smoke was everywhere. There were so many bloody victims on the ground, we helped to evacuate those people to ambulances," he told the AFP news agency.

Al Jazeera sources said 68 people were wounded in the blasts.

A doctor said several women and children were among the casualties.

Bus destroyed

Witnesses said the attack took place on a street lined with restaurants as a bus carrying children to a school drove past.

"Innocent and simple people were gathering to have breakfast or shop in the nearby area. A minibus which was driving past was also hit and four or five of its passengers were killed," Jassim Mohammed, another witness, said.

"How can you explain this act? This is not a military unit, not a military barracks. There is nothing there."

Adhamiyah, a Sunni neighbourhood in a mostly Shia eastern half of the city, saw fierce clashes at the height of Iraq's sectarian violence. Attacks in the area have sharply dropped over the last year.

Despite the improvement in security in large swathes of Iraq, including the capital, armed groups continue to launch near daily attacks, most of them targeting US and Iraqi security forces.

In another attack, in Baquba, capital of volatile northern Diyala province, a teenager in a suicide bomb vest blew herself up at a checkpoint of US-backed security personnel, killing six people and wounding 18 other.

Police said the bomber was a 13-year-old girl.

No future
Bigmel1981. So, your claim is that someone is angry at the US presence and therefore blow up a bus full of kids? And then send in another kid to blow up those who try to help? And this will cease if just the US army go away? It has nothing at all to do with rivaling factions of militant islamists? All suffering will leave Iraq when the forreign troops go home. It's Disneyland....

This is very sad
It is also very, very regretable. But things like this happen in countries that are unstable, all you can do is pray and hope that the madness will stop.

This is not Islam!
This is how Al-Qaeda fights to help the Muslims, by blowing them up in hospitals. One thing is for sure, this is not Islam. It is the religion of Al-Qaeda. I think they call it Salafi Islam.

Were pressing for change...
I'm still not clear on the symbolism of this bombing. But it is obvious that U.S. military presence is nothing but a plague to the Iraqi people. I'm sorry for our for our great misuse of resources that could possibly be helping these people...

dozens die in iraq blasts
bigmel1981..how dare you blame the US for somthing that has been happening for years before the US stepped foot on that soil. these people that kill in the name of Allah are no primitive minded and no better than apes. they do not have respect for life or others lives. and you people that want to shift the blame on those others that are there to help are no better. Grow up, and open your blind eyes. You radical pieces of trash! if it happens to you, you would think different.

13 year old girl
I completely agree the US needs to get out of Iraq now. But did the US kill that little girl? Or did Iraq?

This was murder, not war.
It is my solemn hope and prayer that whomever is carrying these atrocities out has justice executed upon them swiftly. To strike a military force is one thing. But this wasn't an attack on the Iraqi police, army or US troops. This was a deliberate attack on a group of school girls and then a subsequent attack on the people who came to administer aid. It is not brave to mass murder. It appears to me that someone is trying to push Malacki on the SoFA negotiations by killing innocents.

Dozens die in Iraq blast
As long as neighboring countries allow these terrorist to continue to train and grow in their countries, this needless blood shed will continue. The world needs to wake up, this terrorism is going to get worse, not better, as long as islamic countries allow it to be there. This is not Islam, this is pure terrorism. America leaving Iraq is not the answer, unfortunately. I would love nothing more that to see our troops come home. But if they do, it will get worse for iraq, not better.

Dozens Die in Iraq Blast
Dear Bujin, Please refrain from calling people 'apes' and 'primitive'. This is the same colonial discourse championed by whites for hundreds of years. These acts of violence are structural and cannot be removed from the devastating impact that this U.S. colonial quagmire has brought. I highly doubt that apes have the capacity for so much hate, and that goes for Islamic terrorism and U.S. state terrorism. Look up "terrorism" in the U.S. Army Code...

I fail to see how the US military presence motivates someone to kill kids.

Sure blame it on Alqaeda.
It is possible US or Israeli agent give money to cause this massacre, just to let Obama know not withdraw from Iraq. Why weren't they (muslims) killing each other before Bush's "War on Terror" started. Alqaeda=CIA baby.

The people of Iraq will continue to suffer as long as the Us Army is there. So a total pull out is needed.

dozens die in Iraq blasts
I read that a 13 year old girl was responsible for a suicide bomb that killed a number of people. How tragic. Have the men who recruit children to carry out their dirty work no shame? Disgraceful! The day these people face God I think they will get the biggest shock of their lives, when instead of him welcoming them into paradise, he throws them in hell where they belong.

The comments
I dont understand everyones comments. How are these bombings the Americas armys fault. They did not order someone to strap a bomb to themselves and blow it up among innocent civilians. Right now, the only on killing iraqs people are muslim terrorists, not america, put the blame where blame is due.

Iraq
The Iraq turmoil started because of US illegal and immoral invasion. They should leave that country to give its people genuine freedom.

destruction in Iraq
Yes, bombing and killing each other hoping to catch a few Americans is very sensible. Suicide bombers are a brilliant concept supported by terrorists, looking for an excuse. Using children for such purposes and putting them in such jeopardy is shameful. Don't blame the US because we don't support this behavior. We consider such behaviour a crime. Those that have tried it are criminals not part of our society. There are worse things than dressing improperly or not praying.
