'Uranium found' at Syrian site
Mekdad said Damascus will consider an IAEA request to revisit the bombed site [EPA/FILE PHOTO]

Samples taken from a Syrian site bombed by Israel on suspicion it was a covert nuclear reactor, contained traces of uranium combined with other elements that merit further investigation, diplomats have said.

Syria had no immediate comment on the reports on Monday. It has previously denied any covert nuclear programme.

But Fayssal Mekdad, Syria's deputy foreign minister, said Damascus would consider a request by the nuclear watchdog to revisit the bombed site.

Nuclear link

The diplomats, who demanded anonymity because their information was confidential, said the uranium was processed and not in raw form, suggesting some kind of nuclear link.

But one of the diplomats said the uranium finding itself was significant only in the context of other traces found in the oil or air samples taken by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts during their visit to the site in June.

Syria has a rudimentary declared nuclear programme revolving around research and the production of isotopes for medical and agricultural uses.

But the diplomats said the uranium and the other components found on the environmental swipes "tell a story'' worth investigating.

The findings will reportedly figure in a report on Syria that will be presented to the IAEA's 35-nation board next week ahead of a scheduled two-day meeting starting on November 24.

IAEA investigation

Diplomats already said late last month that air and soil samples taken at the site bombed last year by Israeli warplanes had turned up traces of elements that the agency felt needed to be followed up on.

The findings are important after months of uncertainty about the status of the investigation by the nuclear watchdog.

Preliminary results of the environmental samples collected from the site by an IAEA team were inconclusive, adding weight to Syrian assertions that no trips beyond the initial IAEA visit in June were necessary.

The United States says the facility hit by Israeli warplanes in September 2007 was a nearly completed reactor that, when on line, could produce plutonium, a pathway to nuclear arms.

But Damascus denies running a covert programme.

Ibrahim Othman, Syria's nuclear chief, has said his country would wait for final environmental results before deciding how to respond to repeated IAEA requests for follow-up visits to the one in June, when the samples were collected.

Syria fears the IAEA probe could lead to a massive investigation similar to the probe Iran has been subjected to for more than five years - and to related fallout.

Iran is under UN sanctions because of its refusal to heed United Nations security council demands to curb its nuclear activities.

How about someone investigating Israel's nuclear program? What's good for the gander is good for the goose.

look towards israel
the bombs used by the zionist possibly contained the substances found in the samples. the IAEA is a farce, only used to further the objectives of select governments.

Hypocrisy?
DGS, first try spelling the world correctly. Then, explain why a free country with millions of people should drop a deterrent that works. Israel says: we have the moral highground and the right to defend our people. Syria is a dictatorship bent on our destruction. No hypocrisy there!

Uranium
Anytime the US and Israel are involved - 'setup' comes to mind. This incident has 'setup' written all over it.

Israel
Richard, the wonderful thing about the English language is even it is spelt wrong you can still exact the meaning! Israel began by terrorism, they committed a number of terrorist attacks against the British! They should be subject to the same international law and treaties as most other "civilised" countries! And how easy would it be to put some uranium inside the missiles fired by the Israelis?

No hypocrisy here
Israel needs to defend itself against countries that cannot even bring themselves to sign a peace treaty. And now some people think these countries can be trusted with nuclear weapons? Where is the logic there? I am new to this news source (I think it is good to read other viewpoints) and blogs/forums in general. A friend got me started last week with a new blog on this and related subjects: http://www.israelconflicts.com/

Wolf in Sheeps clothing.
I agree to the 1st post. Everyday Israel is killing hundreds of Palestinians without check and no one knows how many war heads they own and still making or getting...... But a small trace in Syria is terrifying everyone. WMD allowed only for Israel?

Because they're such innocent, honest little lambs? There are no saints involved in this matter.

Hypocrisy? Of course! The posts above that describe Israel as this peace loving nation that needs to defend itself are either severely misinformed by the Israeli propaganda machine or are themselves part of it. Let's get something straight: As of today, Israel is the country that is occupying land that is Palestinian/Syrian territory. This is a recognised fact by everyone in the world. Would you sign a peace treaty with a country that is occupying your land? I think not.

Uranium
It's very convinient to "find" this now: especially since the sources are unidentified. Could the traces of uranium found at the now bombed site be simply residue from U.S. supplied depleted uranium munitions used by the IAF?

How can Israel brandish nuclear weapons at the rest of the Middle East and not expect others in the region to wish to do the same? As long as Israel continues to act in this manner, its enemies will feel justified in seeking an equal deterrent. It is the height of hypocrisy to expect anything less.
