Egypt court freezes Israel gas deal

An Egyptian court has overruled a controversial 20-year deal on gas exports to Israel.

Judges ruled in favour of Ibrahim Yousri, a lawyer who says that Egypt is losing $9m for each day that Cairo upholds the fixed-price agreement with Tel Aviv.

Many Egyptians view the gas deal with their former enemy as a betrayal, although Tuesday's court ruling can be appealed against by the government.

"Ibrahim was supported by other political activists who think that exporting gas to Israel helps the Israeli army continue its occupation of Palestinian territories," Amr el-Kakhy, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Cairo, said.

Egypt began to pipe natural gas to Israel in May, in line with a 2005 agreement to deliver 1.7 billion cubic metres of gas per year.

Price difference

In recent months, Ahmed Mohamed Nazif, Egypt's prime minister, has signalled that Cairo wants to increase revenues from its energy exports amid the rising cost of gas, although he has not explicitly referred to the deal with Israel.

Private media organisations and opponents of the Egyptian government have led calls for Cairo to raise its prices for the gas it delivers to Israel.

"According to some experts and analysts here in Egypt, the country pledged to supply Israel with petrol and oil from Sinai in the Camp David peace treaty [between Israel and Egypt in 1979]," our correspondent said.

"When Egyptian oil supplies began to run out three or four years ago, Israel stepped in and demanded the export of gas.

"This is why the Egyptian government went into this memorandum of understanding with the Israeli government. It was not subject to approval by the Egyptian parliament – this is what has angered activists here."

Anti-Israel sentiment is still pervasive in Egypt, 29 years after the two countries signed a US-backed peace treaty.

Egypt and Israel fought against each other in four wars between 1948 and 1973.

Gas deal
Egypt should not allow the export of gas to israel until the occupation ends. After 67 borders are established, then all trade should commence.

Lets face it folks, Israel has never and will never abide fully by the Camp David accords. So why shoudn't other Arab countries, Egypt included, use whatever economic power they have to force Israel to make good on the accords and all the other agreements it purports to support but in reality does not. Bravo to Egypt for taking a stand.

Occupation
I think the question of occupation cannot arise in this case! The palestinians must stop firing rockets so that Israel can reciprocate by opening crossings!I imagine that if rockets were fired into my country, the drums of war would be sounded for the government to retaliate!Israel left Gaza years ago but hamas' agenda is very clear!

han leave everyone alone
so Egypt should ignore the deal it already signed with Israel? That makes a lot of sense for their trade relations in general.

Are you serious?
does anyone even check these feedback postings you are gonna say to allow a country to take a natural resource? This is the problem in this world first you steal a country an leave its people barricaded in settlements now lets just take what we want if Israel would follow threw and actually get the borders none of this would have probally be happening. 1 Hand washs the other...

Positive Action
Energy security affects everyone. I feel there is a good lesson here for Israel and others to learn - that holding and exercising a position of power over another people and doing harm to all of humanity can be played both ways. If a child will not listen, further encouragement is necessary.

in reciprocation of m from afghanistan
if we recap the 1967 peace accord between israel and egypt. the sinai was already in the possession of israel.in the sake of a peace deal with egypt it was returned.obviously with agreements imposed. you talk of one hand washes the other my friend, but yet you have the example of gaza. which fought itself into instability shortly after its liberation. as a jerusalemite and a soldier there is nothing more desired than satisfying peace.yet palastinians can't promise this amongst themselves
