Peace plan adverts target Israelis

Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has placed advertisements in Israeli newspapers in an attempt to increase interest in an Arab peace plan for the region.

The full-page advertisements were published in Hebrew in four Israeli newspapers on Thursday.

The initiative, which offers Israel normal relations with Arab countries, was first proposed in 2002, but has not been acted on depite Israel's president saying in October that he was open to the plan.

The text of the advertisement read: "Fifty-seven Arab and Islamic countries will establish diplomatic ties and normal relations with Israel in return for a full peace agreement and an end to the occupation."

It also lays out the concessions that Israel would have to make for Arab states to put the plan into force, including full withdrawal to the 1967 borders and respect for UN Security Council resolution on the right of Palestinian refugees to return.

'Misinterpreted'

Yasser Abed Rabbo, a senior Abbas aide, said the campaign was meant to inform Israelis about the Arab peace, which until now has been "misinterpreted by the extreme Israeli right-wing as an Arab conspiracy against Israel and its future".

But it was unclear if it was a success with many Israelis spoken to by Al Jazeera on Thursday. They said they did not trust the Palestinians and were suspicious of the Arab initiative.

"The initiative could be good but cannot trust the Palestinians"

Jerusalem resident

"The initiative could be good but we cannot trust the Palestinians ... they haven't made peace within themselves so they certainly cannot make peace with us," one Jerusalem resident said.

Another said that most people would not accept the initiative after previous peace deals.

"They are used to disappontments because they always involve painful compromises. We saw what happened when we gave up Gaza," she said.

The advertisement, bordered by the flags of dozens of Arab and other Muslim states, also ran in Arabic in three Palestinian papers.

It received a mixed response in the Arabic press, with Al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper criticising the move in an editorial.

"We doubt that the advertisements of the Palestinian Authority, which were paid for from the funds offered to the Palestinian people, will be able to get Israeli public opinion to support the Arab peace initiative, just as we doubt ... that it will change the Israelis' position toward the key issues."

'Constructive'

But Asharq Al-Awsat, another pan-Arab newspaper, took a more positive view.

"This is one of the rare times that the PA [Palestinian Authority] has done a political move that is constructive even if they had to pay for it," it wrote.

"Addressing the Israeli public directly will ... put pressure on Israeli politicians who have constantly refused the initiative and scared the public from it."

In October, Shimon Peres, Israel's president, told Hosni Mubarak, his Egyptian counterpart, that although he did not accept all of the plan it could form the basis for negotiations between the two sides.

Egypt, Jordan and Mauritania are the only countries in the 22-member Arab League to have full diplomatic relations with Israel.

Peace plan adverts target Israelis
For any peace, the Palestinian refugees/diaspora would likely like a referendum - for that you need voter registration. The sooner the refugees/diaspora have their voter registration cards, the sooner they can vote on peace. Israelis go to the polls next year - so how about Palestinians doing the same, including the refugees/diaspora? Let the refugees also elect their own representatives who can also talk in negotiations. Same Day Elections.

Waste of money
Israelis will never have "respect for UN Security Council resolution on the right of Palestinian refugees to return" because it means the end of their state. This is a complete non-starter. That Palestinians leaders are still talking about the right of return as a realistic possibility shows how completely unrealistic and impossible Palestinian demands are.

If they wanted to seal the deal...
We here remember when Anwar Sadat came to the Knesset to speak about a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. His visit made a huge difference in the public discourse in this country. We recognized the risk that Mr. Sadat took with his own people when he came here, and we realized that he was serious about peace. If King Abdullah wants to promote the Saudi Plan, the Knesset is only a short flight away. We want to believe that this plan is worth more than just the paper it's written on.

Israelis
There really isn't anything to negotiate. Israel simply has to obey the UN resolutions. All of the Palestinians forced out since 1948 have to be allowed back. If that means that the majority of Israelis are not Jewish then tough. The US is becoming a non-White country and most of us do not have a problem with that. There is nothing special about Israel - get over it. You are a multi-racial, multi-religious, multi-cultural nation. Just get with the times and carry on!

Peace is unreachable today
It is a very simple implementation of the games theory: there is no Israeli politician whois able to approve in the Knesset (ot the referendum) such withdrawal of about 200,000 people and elimination of beatiful developed towns + the "return" of even 10% of the"refugees". And there is no Pal. politician to accept less than it and to stay alive-he will be killed 15 minutes after that like Sadat or Abdullah in 1951. So, peace is impossible now. People lives have to be improved, and then, maybe...

Missing one group
I really applaud this move by Abbas I think it's a great approach to target the Israeli public instead of the elite for a change. But at the same time, we have to remember that the PA doesn't control all of Palestine, and unless this proposal is supported by Hamas or unless Hamas and the PA reach some sort of effective compromise, it will just become another lame duck policy that will go nowhere.

Good Idea
This is a good idea because now Israeli's cannot say that the Arabs are not interested in peace

Someones got to give
Give the kids in Palestine a better place to grow up in. End this bitterness! Selfishness from both sides is only destoying the people. President Abbas might not have the prefect plan, but it sure beats the situation now! People need to start being productive in the towns they live in, if nothing changes, they will only continue to be smothered in politics. Everyone is talking, no one is acting out for change. I hope this plan goes into action. I hope its not just another article.

I realize that people who live in a country don`t always agree with the entire foreign policy of their own governments. I do not agree with some of the foreign policy of the US. I think attempting to speak directly to peoples hearts is noble. I pray the people and the government of Isreal could let go of fear, revenge and fighting. Please stop the bloodshed. Please all peolple and goverments in the region let go of all of your hatred. The world needs heroes that can stop bloodshed and fighting.

Palestinians & Bani Israelees are children of one father Anabi Ibraheem - PBUH - Ameen
The world must be very realistic & tell my brothers Arabs & Banee Isralee to stop this insanity. Banee Israelee are descendants of Prophet Isaac & Arabs are descendants of Anabi Ismaeel. What same unto both of you. Can you visualize the South Africa and form a federation and be a mighty nation rather than blood shocking vampires full of greed and without shame? No body owns lands in this world. Peace now and live in prosperity Banee Israelee & Al Qudus.

Palestinian/Israeli peace plan
I have a suggestion- the Palestinaians and Israelis should both insist that any US team involved in this should be comprised completely of American Indians. We actually do understand both sides and being tribal people ourselves we understand proper protocols for reconciliation. We are the one people on the planet that both sides not only like but feel a sense of kinship with, and we do not have the usual US agenda- we are motivated by compassion not greed or powerlust.

History and israel
I don't think that history reconises something called isrel before 1917. This miscariage is since its struggling to become a birth. Palestinian should continue their struggle against their colonial power until the country goes back to its owners and that day is ver near. Please publish now
