Iran expands nuclear operations
Aghazadeh said progress has been made constructing a 40 megawatt heavy-water reactor [AFP]

Iran has expanded its controversial nuclear programme and now operates more than 5,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges, the country's nuclear chief has said.

The figure released on Wednesday is a significant rise from the 4,000 Tehran said were operational in August at the Natanz plant in central Iran.

Gholamreza Aghazadeh, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, said Tehran had no intention of halting its nuclear operations over Western pressure and would continue to install centrifuges to produce fuel for future nuclear power plants.

US and EU leaders have accused Iran of using a civilian energy programme as a front to develop atomic weapons, despite a collective assessment made by 16 US spy agencies last year that it had ceased such activity in 2003.  Tehran has denied the claims.

Uranium enriched to low level is used to produce nuclear fuel but further enrichment can make it suitable for weapon use.

'Good progress'

Iran has said it plans to move towards large-scale uranium enrichment that will ultimately involve 54,000 centrifuges, with a target of 9,000 operational by next year.

Aghazadeh said Iran aims to start electricity production at its first nuclear power plant - the Russian-built Bushehr facility - in mid-2009.

He said "good progress" has been made in constructing a 40 megawatt heavy-water reactor near Arak in central Iran.

"The heavy water plant is experiencing a production beyond its capacity," Aghazadeh said without elaboration.

"The Arak complex will be used to make isotopes for medical and agricultural ends," he said.

The West has repeatedly called on Iran to stop construction of the reactor, fearing it could be used as a second track toward building an atomic warhead.

Rocket launch

Iran also announced on Wednesday that it had successfully launched into space its second rocket - the Kavoshgar (Explorer) 2.

"The rocket was launched to register and send correct environmental data and [to test] separation of the engine from the body," state radio said.

It said after reaching the lower reaches of space, the rocket returned to Earth on a parachute.

The first Kovoshgar rocket was launched in February.

The West fears Iran's space programme may form part of a bid to build missiles that could carry warheads.

Iran's refusal to halt its programmes has drawn three rounds of UN sanctions since 2006, as well as separate US measures.

Iran Expands Nuclear Operations
Not until the philosophy that hold one nation superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited there is always going to be conflict. If US has nuclear technology and where the first to use it against humanity(Hiroshima, Nagasaki) why cant other nations develop the technology for energy purposes. They don't trust IRAN but nobody trust them either.

I like the idea of a nuclear Iran. All countries who have nuclear weapons inmediatelly begin to use diplomacy instead weapons (just see India and Pakistan, US and Russia, etc). Nuclear warheads are a very deterrent tool and nobody wants to attack first!!

nuclear Iran
Our world abounds with dangerous animals, all human. They see no conflict in sending armed forces thousands of miles from their home to impose THEIR vision of light and truth on nations developing in directions other than their own causing death and destruction at will. If the leadership of Iran sees the nuclear option as a good defence who can fault it. In the absence of trust and security defend yourself, I would. My solution, bring ALL armies home. Give no one any reason to defend themselves.

Ahmadinejad visit
I am so greatful that the enlightend leadership of Qatar has arranged for this wonderful medium "Aljazeera". I also would like to warn them that Ahmadinejad does not have too much foreign experience, please give him some slack for his lack. We need to build trust and Qatar has done a great deal in creating a communicatative approach to solving regional problems. We should build on this.

Irans ambitions
Can any father stop his children from drinking alcholo or taking drug while he is doing them himself? if the answer is yes, then West and specially Americca has right to stop Iran from his nuclear plans.

Iran expands nuclear operations
Truthfully I can't tell whether things nowa days are sad or just funny? They say iran is using that as a FRONT. america and isreal use war as a front to suck the money from planets natural resources while the whole world falls into a recession? In my eyes this is all fake they make you see what they want you too, and blind us from TRUTH, Iranians should be able to do what thehy want whether its weapons or power, No one should interfere with there affairs.

Iran has every right to develop nuclear weapons or not. They are a soveriegn nation. Obtaining a nuclear arsenal will force the west to rely more on diplomatic means than on threats of invasion.

Iran and their energy
I think it is cool that Iran make themselves independent of oil for their electricity. As long as the fuel they are making remains for that purpose. The fuel is no good as a sword, it tends to recoil and cut the user.

What is the reality with Irans nuclear operations? Is it really for the development of nuclear weapons? Why is the West so mad for Irans civilian energy program? Jealousy, Fear??
I don't think that the way to go around with Iran is by imposing sanctions. I believe this issue requires diplomacy to be the key player. Dimplomacy not sanctions!! The question is: If Iran's nuclear programme is really for nuclear weapons, why has not this been confirmed yet? The IAEA , due to the West's pressure, has been in Natanz several times in order to esnsure that the nuclear facility is for peaceful purposes. The IAEA,as mentioned by Mohammad Elbaradei, did not seem any anomaly yet.

Three Cheers for the sovereign state of Iran!!!
Outstanding! I hope the Iranians have learned a thing or two about western criminals and that they DO have the capability to defend themselves, by any means necessary. Naturally, the mass murdering criminals of the west would rather their perceived victims not be able to combat their criminal intentions! There will never be peace in Mesopotamia until the criminals among us are forced to their knees once and for all for their deliberate crimes

I'm not unserstanding why the whole world is so curious about only Iran. Neighbour Israel has hundreds of nuclear wepons, and almost all the countries who is behind iran (including US,UK) has this. If somebody talks about nuclear disarm, it should be applied to all, not for a single country.

Irans nuclear energy
I can't see what the problem is with Iran getting either nuclear weapons or just generally energy for electricity purposes. Our country will have to build more new nuclear power stations soon to meet its shortfall in power in the next decade. As with nuclear weapons, Israel has several. Iran's unlikely to sell nuclear weapons to Al Qaeda as their two different religious kinds. Iran's Shia and Al Qaeda is Sunni.

Wake up!
If the terrorists in Mumbai had access to nuclear fuel, would they have used it? Iran's irresponsible chants of death can be heard on any TV. No one doubts what goal they have in mind. The controls available to the world through the IAEA inspections are the only hope. Iran must swallow it's pride and protect the world's children from such a terrible threat. Even if they are well intentioned, there are others, like those in Mumbai who are not.

Nuclear Iran
I wonder why people are making so much noise about Iran's nuclear. What is wrong with Iran developing WMD when the world is being held hostage by lairs, muderers, colonialists and irresponsible regimes in America, Isreal, Britain, and France? You expect the Iranians to wait until they are being humiliated by America and Isreal like Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq?

Iran x Nuclear Weapon
Iran don't need atomic bombs to destroy Israel. Only need to launch some rockets with enriched uranium over Telaviv and others big cities. Iran have boths. The basic question is: Israel can have atomic bombs and Iran no???!!! Why??????

If Isreal can have nuclear, why cant Iran have one as well?
The world seems unfair. Some countries can do anything whilst others are not allowed to do what they want. Iran is accused building atomic or nuclear bomb, what proof do the Western countries have to prove that??

What proof is there that Israel has nuclear weapons? This has NEVER been confirmed by anyone.
