Gaza mortars wound Israeli soldiers

Hamas said two of its fighters were wounded in an Israeli air strike on Gaza earlier on Friday [AFP]

At least six Israeli soldiers have been wounded when mortars fired by Palestinian fighters from Gaza landed in a military base in southern Israel.

Israel's rescue service said one of the soldiers was critically injured, and the others were slightly or moderately hurt.

According to the Israeli military, armed Palestinians fired a total of 11 mortars at southern Israel on Friday. Three of them landed at the base in the western Negev desert.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility from any Palestinian group.

Earlier in the day, Palestinian gunmen clashed with Israeli troops elsewhere along the volatile Gaza-Israel border.

Gaza's ruling Hamas faction said two of its fighters were wounded in an Israeli air strike.

The violence is further marring a five-month-old truce between Israel and Gaza rulers that began breaking down in early November.

The truce was meant to be renewed next month, and its fate is unclear.

Armed Palestinians have fired dozens of rockets and mortar bombs at Israel in the past three weeks after Israel launched raids that killed about a dozen gunmen, and closed crossing points with Gaza, choking off some food supplies to the coastal territory.

No Deal
Israel wants to work on deal? The same deal they've spent 60 years on? the deal could be AFTER recognizing the democratically elected gov't. AFTER Israel ceases control of all resources and access. AFTER they relenquish settlements. Otherwise the demand should be: 1 vote for every 1 person in all Palestine or refugee camps in upcoming Israel elections. Without that vote Israel is NOT a democracy. FREE GAZA NOW

Gaza mortars wound Israeli soldiers
Nobody in their right mind likes to see innocent people die and suffer or destruction caused by military operations. The effects of these rocket attacks are cause of Israeli discontent with the current government and calls for military action. A peace process is progressing. Time is needed to strike a deal with the Palestinians and Israelis. Hamas missle strikes need to stop and aid resumed to Gaza. Arab League council intervention to stop missle strikes urged. There is no hope for any truce being effective as long as the state of Isreal bullies the Palestinians. As long as the western mentality of being disturbed when a person or country denies the right of the existence of Isreal but allows the denial of the right to be a Palestinian, then nothing will change.
