Israel resumes Gaza bombardment

Israel has threatened to widen Operation Cast Lead after Saturday's deadly air raids [AFP]

Israeli warplanes have resumed their air strikes on Gaza Strip, hitting targets across the territory, including a mosque and a television station.

Two bodies were retrieved from the rubble of a mosque near Gaza City's Shifa hospital early on Sunday, witnesses said.

The blast, just after midnight, blew out windows at the hospital, hospital officials said.

The studio building of al-Aqsa TV was also destroyed, but the station remained on air with a mobile unit.

Palestinians counted about attacks in the early hours of Sunday, after more than 225 people had been killed and hundreds of other injured in air raids the previous day as Israel launched Operation Cast Lead.

Ehud Barack, Israel's defence minister, has warned that the air raids could be followed by a major ground incursion into the Gaza Strip.

"We are ready for anything. If it's necessary to deploy ground forces to defend our citizens, we will do so," Barak's spokesman quoted him as saying on Sunday.

Israeli television has reported that hundreds of infantry and armoured forces were massing on the border of the territory.

No truce

Earlier Barak rejected calls for a new truce between the Palestinian Hamas movement and Israel.

"For us to be asked to have a ceasefire with Hamas is like asking you [the United States] to have a ceasefire with al-Qaeda. It's something we cannot really accept," he told Fox News from Tel Aviv.

Ehud Olmert, the outgoing Israeli prime minister, described the assault as a war on the Palestinian faction which took full control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007 after pushing out security force loyal to Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president.

Members of the Israeli cabinet say the attack was in response to an increase in the number of home-made rockets being fired into southern Israel since a ceasefire ended on December 19.

At least one Israel was killed and six other wounded in missile attacks by Palestinian fighters after the raids on Gaza began.

Carnage

Gaza witnesses reported heavy damage after dozens of missiles were fired from helicopter gunships and fighter jets on about 40 different locations in the strip on Saturday.

Hamas "not shaken"

Many of the dead in the series of attacks were police officers, including Tawfiq Jabber, the Gaza chief of police.

The toll is expected to rise further, with bodies still lying buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings.

Hospitals, already suffering from shortages due to an 18-month blockade on the Gaza Strip, said they were struggling to cope with the number of injured, which included women and children.

Gaza is densely populated. Its 1.5 million residents were already experiencing shortages in power and basic supplies due to the siege which is widely condemned by human rights movements as a collective punishment.

'Ugly massacre'

Ismail Haniya, the Hamas leader in Gaza, called the assault Israel's "ugliest massacre".

About 40 installations were hit in the first day of attacks by Israel [AFP]
"I call on Palestinians to remain united and together in the face of this crime, in the face of this massacre and continued aggression, targeting our soil and our citizens," he said.

Olmert, speaking in Tel Aviv on Saturday, said the operation would take time and called on Israelis to be "patient".

"The quiet we offered was answered with mayhem. Our desire for calm was answered with terror," he said.

"You are not our enemies. We do not fight against you," Olmert said in a direct address to Palestinians.

"[Terrorist organisations] are disastrous for both peoples. Israel is not fighting against the Palestinian people, and the targets attacked today were chosen with the intent of avoiding civilian casualties."

Long operation

Jacky Rowland, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Jerusalam, said: "People have been forewarned about further operations of this intesnsity for many days to come, with more sorties flown by Israeli planes and helicopters and more targets in Gaza.

"In response, more than 50 rockets were fired into Israel today. Defence officials are warning that there could be as many as 200 rockets fired every day into Israel in the days to come."

Salam Fayyad, the Palestinian prime minister in the West Bank-based government, condemned the attack and demanded an immediate cessation.

Many leaders added their voices to condemn the onslaught, including Ban Ki-moon, secretary-general of the UN, who called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Mousa Abu Morzouz, the deputy leader of Hamas, said: "Nobody in this world can accept what happened and the Israeli aggression ... [we expect] the international community to stand against this and say that it is not acceptable."

Mustafa Barghouthi, the former Palestinian information minister, said: "This is not an attack on Hamas. It is an attack on the whole population and the free will of the people of Gaza."

He accused Israel of committing "war crimes" and demanded that Abbas and his government stop all relations with Israel.

'Only just beginning'

The Israeli army released a statement on Saturday saying "terrorist installations" were hit and that all Israeli pilots returned unharmed.

A police graduation ceremony in Gaza City was struck by an Israeli attack [AFP]

Avi Benayahu, an Israeli military spokesman said: "The operation against Hamas is "only just beginning".

The air raids follow a breakdown of a six-month-old Israel-Hamas truce earlier this month.

The ceasefire expired on December 19, with Hamas arguing that Israel had violated the truce by preventing vital supplies from entering the Strip.

Egypt has opened the Rafah crossing with the Gaza Strip to receive injured people, Egyptian officials said. Ambulances have been sent to the crossing and two Egyptian hospitals emptied to take in the wounded.

Hamas won control of the Palestinian Legislative Council in elections in January 2005. The international community refused to accept a Hamas-led government, demanding that the faction recognise Israel and renounce violence. Economic sanctions by the EU and US followed.

Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007 after bloody street battles against its rival, Fatah.

Air raids on Gaza
One day very soon when the western economy collapses, the usa will no longer be able to pay for the ammunition. When that happens the Arabs will retake Palestine with ease. This is inevitable. My heart is with the people of Palestine, hang on, it won't be long now. Fred.

Sorry to hear of the suffering of those of the palestinians who have nothing to do with the fighting, but how can palestine expect isreal to sit back when the hamas fires rockets at isrealis who have nothing to do with the fighting. Get the hamas and hezbollah out of the gaza strip and teach young people to be tolerant of isreal instead of being raised to hate isrealis and maybe in about 50 years you may experience some peace. Or keep killing each other and spreading hate till no one is left.

Never again will I respect Israel
I was raised in Canada, comfortably Christian British-descent middle-class. We went to schools where we had lots of Jewish friends. We thought the film "Exodus" was just fine. Now, after all these years, I despise the zionists who took over Palastinian land. I have nothing good to say for the Jewish state. I only hope that Israel realizes it has not only caused carnage to the people it attacks, but it has caused equal carnage to any hope of any respect from folks like myself. Israel is horrible.

Carltons comments
Carlton, How would you expect Israel to react to the hundreds of missles fired by Hamas from Gaza into Israel, 100% of which are targeted at civilians? Or the fact that Hamas has spent the last three years during which it has basically had full control over Gaza smuggling not food, not medicine, not educational supplies, but missle parts and bombs to kill Israeli civilians? Carlton, I'd love to see how you would react if it was YOUR FAMILY Hamas was targeting!

This article is not balanced journalism
This article failed to even mention that the military strike was Israel's response to as many as 500 mortar and rockets fired from Gaza into Israel against civilian targets. Israel gave up all of Gaza and there has been no peace for those land concessions. 90% of the dead are Hamas in this attack so far. 100% of those killed by the Hamas rocket attacks have been civilian Jews.

Angry in Canada
Israel is disgusting. Hamas rockets have killed a handful of Israelis in the last 5 years. There is absolutely NO justification for this. Israel has the 4th largest army in the world and one of the most modern. If they want the rocket fire to stop they need to give the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza the country that rightly belongs to them.

Israel Attack
I believe this has been planned for a long time. A cordination between egypt, USA, Israel, and Abbas the palestinian president. Israel is doing it for Abbas so he can go back and rule in Gaza, since he couldn't beat Hamas. That is the only way I srael can stop the attacks. They are all on it regardless of what you hear them say on TV.

Support of Israel
As an Israeli, I am not happy to see this violence. The Hamas was chosen in a democratic society and the people of Gaza chose to be represented by a terror organization. That is the reason why they are being punished for the terror actions of the Hamas. No one in Israel wants innocent civilians to get hurt, but unfortunately, it is impossible to avoid it. Let's not forget that the Hamas was launching dozens of rockets and missles a day in Israel. I pray God has mercy on the innocent.

Jews must act against Israel and Zionists
We Jews are already being blamed, unjustly, for the massive rip-offs by a small number of mostly-Jewish bankers. But, given that so many Jews are openly supportive of the Zionist terror-state, the rest of us had better speak and act forcefully against Israel and its enablers if we don't want to be JUSTLY blamed for its crimes.

No place to hide
Did Hamas really think that Israel would allow it to send rockets and suicide bombers against its citizens and let it continue with impunity? Would anyone, or any country, tolerate that situation? Hamas has stung a giant and now is being swatted. Israel has the capacity to destroy all of Gaza. It is showing humane restraint in targeting only military. Unfortunately Hamas send rockets from mosques and schools, bringin collaterai damage on innocent civilians. Jews believe it is tragic. Do you?

Israeli air strikes
I am an American Jew-not a Zionist though. These strikes are a response-that is neither legitimate, nor not-to the thousands of strikes the past few years that were meant to break Zionist moral. Israel should cease hostilities as should Hamas. Israel's existence should never of happened-BUT it has and therefore must be accepted. Hamas should accept it. The Palestinians and fellow Arabs must-at all costs-cease its nostalgia for a "liberated Palestinian state" and work for peace and accept it.

Palestinians are suffering
All hidden under the name of defence, when they are clearly acts of terrorism. How can peace be established with oppression and destruction? And the building of illegal settlements? It is only provoking violence and retaliation. Israel should truthfully adhere to the UN resolutions, cease covering up their acts, and treat the Palestinians with dignity and respect this is the answer to preventing attacks.

Palestinians are suffering
The news is devastating and heartbreaking, and illustrates the continual oppression of Israel against the Palestinians. It is totally unacceptable and unjustifiable. First the blockade, preventing vital food, water, medications etc. and now this? It is an atrocity. How will the Palestinians cope? How long do they have to suffer? For how long is the world prepared to keep quiet about these actions? When will the world take actions against these criminal acts?

Israels timing
I suppose it is entirely a coincidence that this attack was launched just ahead of Israeli elections. And, of course, it will just be a coincidence that Israel's right wing parties will benefit from the war hysteria. Odd how it all works out, isn't it? Just another historical accident, I'm sure. Hamas wanted the Israeli attack and Hamas is responsible for thousands of new orphans today. Only the Hamas leadership. Common sense would lead any leader who cared about his people to stop bombing their neighbor, especially when their neighbor has a great army and the will to negotiate with them. The Israelis will have to retake Gaza to secure their borders. They should push back the population in Gaza from whatever points they shoot off missles.

When Hamas gained political power, they assumed more responsibility for their actions. When you attack another country, as a political entity representing your people, it is more than just a terrorist strike. It is a declaration of war. You CANNOT attack a foreign nation as a political entity with a superior military and not expect repercussions. If the leaders of Hamas cannot see that fact, then they will doom all Palestinians, not just themselves.

The Gaza Airstrikes
Homemade bombs & rockets are NOT in the same category as as the missiles dropped in the air-strikes. The retaliation is proportionately off the scale. This is not the path to peace - this is the path to the annihilation of not just the Palestinians but ultimately to the state of Israel. A new paradigm is needed here and a solution must be found.

These are serious crimes against humanity. You mouthpieces for the Israeli murderers commenting here should be ashamed of yourself! The attacks carried out in Gaza which killed and injured a huge number of civilians including women and children is shocking. Equally shocking is that the rest of the international community stands by and observes this happening. This is an ugly crime against the Palestinian people. After the humiliation suffered by the IDF at the hands of the stalwart youth of Hizbullah it is understandable that they would fear facing the Mujahideen again in face to face combat. WOW a lot of HYPOCRISY there is here! On one side Hamas is firing hundreds of rackets to Israel during the truce and Israelis don't react! Moreover Israel let Gaza assistance in food and medicine . Are the people in Gaza blind?! Have they forgot that Hamas killed Fatah men?! This was the real massacre! Can any one imagine what would happen if Russia was in this situation… be sure Gaza was disappear…

Gazas Plight
There are a lot of dumb folks in the world who condemn Israel for retaliating for the almost daily rocket bombardment. The only mistake Israel has made is its failure to act more quickly. If Hamas is truly the Gazan's representives then they know how to end the suffering. Stop the cross border fire of missiles and rockets and Israel would surely stop the air raids and forego a ground assault. But Hamas want Israel proper and that wil simply not happen.

Just being a Muslim. Everyone consider his own family - if someone did with your family like this? May Allah understand you because you do not know Islam so that's why you are doing this?

Defence!
I'm really shocked about the justification which says that Israel is responding to the rockets. The ceasefire originally includes the ending of the siege over Gaza which didn't happen, that means the Palestinians should keep quiet until they die from hunger and the lack of medicines! Of course they will resist and that is what Israel wants to justify the war which was already decided. Besides that, the occupation of Palestine 60 years ago by the colonial settlers supported by US and UK is the problem.

Mr. David
David from the US says that Israel should not exist but it happened so the Palestinians have to accept it! I want to ask you a question: why didn't the brave Americans accept the British occupation as a fact on the earth, why did they fight until they gained freedom? Occupation is occupation, no matter for how long it exists it doesn't change the fact that the land is occupied and the native people have been driven away.

To hell with my govermernt
This is the worst attack as in my life experience. My government is the most chicken **** and I am so shy to be in my own country. The Israeli soldiers have no balls at all because they are only brave enough to attack civilians. For myself I hope the zionists will be doomed and gone fom the face of the earth.

Response to Eli from Israel
It is because Israel has stopped allowing Gaza from getting food and medicine and made them live in hell that they responded by throwing rocket onto Israel. How is Israel torturing Palestinians in both West Bank and especially in Gaza and you do not expect them to do the least thing such as throwing rockets. And Israel's response to the entire situation proves it strongly that they do NOT want peace.

Israel resumes Gaza bombardment
Every dog has his own day - you finish Palestine today they finish you tomorrow, the more you bombard them the more the enemity grows in their heart.

Solution for World Peace
The only undeniable solution leading to World Peace is just 2 simple words... Disarm Islam. Every newsworthy story since 9/11 cries out for this. THe UN should make it a 10 year prison term for selling any bombs, bullets, missles, RPGs to any muslim anywhere by anyone. Arabs and Muslims would then only die of Old age or at their own hands.

Carlton's comment
It seems that most people do not understand the right to defend oneself. With 50 missiles a day coming into your city or town, it's not a joke. I hope this guy has experienced missile attack same as I had in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. I don't think that Israel will just say thank you for all the missiles fired into their country. Hamas is making this point again so that the world will rally behind them in condemning the Jews. But look who started it, Hamas has no concern for the civilians.

The history on the matter
I find myself siding with Israel for the most part.If everyone checks their history, they'll know that the Jews were there in that area for a long time before being slowly exiled & then coming back. The hostile actions of the Arabs to being with were because they were threatened & felt Israel would kick all the them. I am sorry to see innocents suffer. Hamas is the reason for its people suffering, Palestinians should rise up and overthrow them

to all who are against Hamas
all those missiles fired into Israel hmm.... I wonder how many missiles actually killed any civilians. Only a total of 18 civilians died while in Gaza, nearly 415 people died because of air raids

The key of the matter
Fascists on both sides should be goners. It's hilarious has most of North-Americans who answered this feedback, maintain the same CNN new-title type of discourse in their mouths, Hamas is terrorist and it played it on itself. I wanna ask you if all those babies and kids who died are also apart of the "terrorist" organization. Use your heads people, USA, Britain and all those who supply Israel and Palestine weapons have blood on their hands the rest are just side-effects. War is big business!!!

Go Hamas
Let's put a few millions to the concentration camp, prohibit any movements, stop trades, prohibit external aid and keep them there for 50 years. Then make surprised face and say - why don't they just quietly die there?

The US/Israel is using the excuse that Hamas fires rockets at their miilitary bases to carry out it's atrocities against the civilian Palestinian population of Gaza. Well, lets see they have no army to use they have no other way of exerting any pressure on their occupiers and no hope of a peace treaty in sight. I would like to ask what do you expect them to do apart from dying quietly?
