US blames Hamas 'thugs' for deaths

The White House said Palestinian fighters were responsible for the deaths in Gaza [EPA]

The White House has said that Hamas "thugs" were responsible for provoking the Israeli air raids that killed and injured hundreds of people in the Gaza Strip.

Gordon Johndroe, the Bush administration spokesman, said Israel must try to avoid civilian casualties, but laid the blame for deaths on the Palestinian groups that controls the impoverished territory.

"These people [Hamas] are nothing but thugs, and so Israel is going to defend its people against terrorists like Hamas," he said late on Saturday.

The remarks late on Saturday came as the United Nations held an emergency meeting to discuss the attacks, and just hours after the Arab League announced it was preparing to hold a summit in Doha, Qatar on January 2.

Truce urged

Johndroe said the US wanted to see the six-month truce between Israel and Hamas, which ended on December 19, restored, but that this could only be done if Palestinian fighters end their missile attacks on Israel.

"If Hamas stops firing rockets into Israel, then Israel would not have a need for strikes in Gaza," he told reporters. "What we've got to see is Hamas stop firing rockets into Israel."

"We call for an immediate ceasefire and urge everybody to exert maximum restraint"

Javier Solana,
EU foreign policy chief

George Bush, the US president, discussed the fighting with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, Stephen Hadley, the US national security adviser, and Condoleezza Rice, US secretary of state, Johndroe said.

The Saudi state news agency SPA reported that King Abdullah had discussed "the Israeli aggression against Gaza" and the "implications of continuing Israel's policies of blockade, occupation and torture against the Palestinian people all over the occupied territories."

He reportedly called for "the major countries to shoulder their responsibilities to stop this Israeli attack and save the lives of the innocent and remaining infrastructure in the Palestinian territories".

Rice released a statement urging "all concerned to protect innocent lives and to address the urgent humanitarian needs of the people of Gaza".

Arab response

The Arab League summit has said it plans to hold a summit on the issue in Doha, Qatar on January 2. At least 10 nations have already agreed to take part.

Arab foreign ministers were due to hold an emergency meeting to take a common position on Israeli raids on Sunday but the meeting was postponed until Wednesday.

Amr Moussa said Arab foreign ministers would meet on Wednesday [AFP]
Amr Moussa, Arab League secretary-general, said the meeting was postponed because many ministers were busy in separate meetings of two Arab regional groups - the Gulf Co-operation Council and the Maghreb Union.

"The time worries us very much because of the delay in holding the ministerial
meeting but we will not remain silent and consultations are continuing," he said.

However, the attacks were likely to dominate an economic summit of Gulf leaders in Oman.

"The issue will impose itself on the agenda. The events of yesterday will have their deserved place in the discussions," Hamad al-Rashdi, Oman's information minister, said.

On Saturday, the head of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which comprises of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, described the attacks as "barbaric" and "ugly".

Egypt condemned Israel's raids and said it would keep trying to restore a truce between Israel and Gaza.

A presidential statement quoted by the Mena news agency said Egypt held Israel responsible for the deaths and injuries that result from the raids.

"Egypt will continue its contacts to prepare an atmosphere conducive to restoring the period of calm and achieving reconciliation between the Palestinian groups."

Ceasefire calls

Javier Solana, the EU foreign policy chief, also called for an immediate ceasefire.

"We are very concerned at the events in Gaza," he said. "We call for an immediate ceasefire and urge everybody to exert maximum restraint."

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, said the "escalation" must be halted.

A statement from the Elysee Palace said that there was "no military solution in Gaza" and called for the "conclusion of a lasting truce".

The Russian foreign ministry said: "Russia believes it is necessary to halt immediately the large-scale acts of force against the Gaza Strip, which have already caused considerable victims and suffering amongst the Palestinian population.

"At the same time, we call on the leadership of Hamas to stop firing rocket on Israeli territory," it said, adding that the most important priority now was for the parties to restore a truce.

Tony Blair, envoy for the so-called Middle East Quartet, deplored the "tragic of loss of life".

He called for a "new strategy for Gaza, which brings that territory back under the legitimate rule of the Palestinian Authority in a manner which ends their suffering and fully protects the security of Israel".

No win situation
Both the Palestinians and Israelis will not win this conflict. It's just a matter how much casualties each side is willing to take. The dilemma is that Israel will not accept one casualty and Hamas is willing to have all Palestinians murdered for the sake of a false or pyrrhic victory. Only the innocent will suffer and in the end, there will still be no Palestinian state and Israel will modernize their wall with sophisticated electronics in the hope of stopping all rocket and mortar attacks.

What did Hamas really expect?
Hamas fires 300+ rockets and mortar shells into Israel in the last 10 days, and they whine and cry when Israel fires back. Hamas just wants attention, and most smart and wise people will not fall for Hamas' childish games. Hamas has a chance to show the world what they can do in forming a well run govenment and soceity, but they waste their time showing the world how foolish they are in running their government. Grow up Hamas because we can see through your childish games.

The Death of Common Sense
Ok. So let me get this right. After months of ceasefire, during which Israel put up blockades to stop almost all essential goods from getting in, militants start firing rockets to vent their anger. The shelling does not kill a single Israeli. Now Israel is fed up so it decides to bomb any building in Gaza it deems as a 'Hamas institution'-be it Civilian or otherwise-and kill a hefty 250 people while injuring 600. Now the US says Hamas is responsible for the deaths. That makes perfect sense.

Israeli Air Raids
Have we not been here before! The world condemns Israel apart from America who blames Hamas, Syria and Iran. It seems that everyone wants peace talks but the major players are not invited. Peace in the hands of the major powers in the region, Europe and America appears not even to be a token gesture. The conflict is not only a trajectory for the Palestinians/Israelis but also for the entire human race. Furthermore it shows that humans have not evolved beyond animalistic instincts.

What did Hamas really expect??
Dear Robert, with all due respect, as a human being you have no compassion for the civilians that have died and are injured.. as far as you are concerned, ''they deserved it''.. thousands of lives have been affected and you believe it is a commendable act? Hamas may be volatile at times but never do they kill so many civilians.. you tell me, who are the real terrorists??

blame game
I suggest that each side must stop the violence and talk. Nothing will happen but endless killings, I bet even when I grow old, this will be the same scenario. For the Palestinians, stop firing rockets to the Israeli side so that there will be no pretaliatiatory actions that kill innocent civilians. On the Israeli side, they should consider negotiations first. This will be a continous cycle of revenge on both sides unless both of them each side do someting.

Perceptions
Everyone looks at this violence from a different angle. The US sees Hamas as "Thugs" and terrorists. The people living in Gaza see Israel as murderers, the Israelis see Hamas attacks with rockets as unprovoked. Maybe we all need to just stop the violence no matter who started it. You can't change the way people see things through a veil of bloody tears. God values life and apparently many humans do not value his gifts.

Gaza
Talks? Who will listen to Blair - ever again - after Iraq? The incoming American President? I fear we will have more of the same we have heard from Bush - only phrased differently. The Arab States must combine to help Gaza. And they should do it NOW. Hasn't this small nation suffered enough?

War crimes
Again no European country or the US is condemning what is happening with ther Palestinians. For years Israel has organised a blockadeagainst Gaza with the help of the EU, US and Egypt. A crime of war and against humanity, still no one in the West with their mouth full of words like freedom and human rights when it comes to Russia, China or Zimbabwe is willing to condemn these criminals. Olmert, Barak, Livni and those who are aiding this crime should all stand trial in court and be condemned.

Forgive me and let me do as I please
Dear Robert and Gary, Let me take your house, lock you in a room, set rules which you must follow, prevent neighbours from assisting you, beat you up when you protest, give a room and some loose change to your brother as he acknowledges me as the master of the house, invite all my cousins to stay in as long as they like - because my grandpa used to live there many years ago and my sacred book says that the house was promised for me and my cousins. Will you allow me to do all this, and forgive me in a year or two?

Thugs! - the irony
No surprise! What is even more sickening is that Israel and US are trying to justify the genocide. Livni is despicable. When will Israel understand that Hamas is not a terrorist organisation. They are a social movement - theyARE the Palestinian people fighting for their rights that have been oppressed for so long. A social movement can never be 'bombed' to destruction. The more leaders they kill the more people will step up to fill those positions.

Fiesta
Publish some good news for a change! Give the citizens some hope. Have a festival where all are invited. Good food, dances, songs. All are invited. No faces covered, leave your weapons at home. Play nice, make new friends. Invite westerners and Israielies if they agree to leave all weapons behind. Remember the story of WWI Christmas when the fighting stoped and both sides met for a few hours of peace and frendship (Silent Night Holy Night all is calm all is bright).

Hamas and Arab lack of credibility
I find it incredible that Arab nations think nothing of Hamas criminals continually baiting Israel and firing rockets into Israeli civilian areas while expecting no retaliation! Where is all this Arab outrage when Hamas and Hezbollah initiate these actions and kill Israelis, and then whine about the retaliation. Maybe they could be rational for once and place the blame for all of this on Hamas and their criminal associates.
