Violence at Gaza protest in Yemen

Protests have been held across the Middle East against the four-day-Israeli air attack on Gaza [AFP]

Demonstrators in the Yemeni port city of Aden have broken into the Egyptian consulate in a protest against Cairo's response to Israel's offensive against Gaza, a security official has said.

The protesters, who were mostly students from the University of Aden, "vandalised furniture before they were removed peacefully from the building", the official said on Tuesday, asking not to be identified.

Another security official said three staff members were inside the building at the time but they were unhurt.

The official said one protester was wounded when a consular guard opened fire and that the protesters retaliated by setting fire to two consular vehicles.

More than 20 demonstrators were arrested.

Protests have been held across the Middle East against the four-day-Israeli air attack on Gaza, which has killed at least 360 Palestinians and wounded more than 1,600.

Many Arabs have accused Cairo of giving the green light to Israel's assault after Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's president, hosted Tzipi Livni, Israel's foreign minister, for talks just two days before the launch of the onslaught.

Rafah closure

In the absence of Israeli embassies in most Arab capitals, Egyptian diplomatic missions have been a particular focus of the demonstrations.

Demonstrators in Beirut, Lebanon - angry over Egypt's response to Israel's raids on Gaza - attacked the Egyptian embassy, throwing stones before police used tear gas to disperse them.

Protests have also been held outside the Egyptian embassy in Amman, the capital of Jordan.

Egypt has come under heavy criticism from Arab and Muslim countries over its refusal to re-open its border crossing with the Gaza Strip at Rafah over the past year, thereby aiding Israel's blockade of the territory.

Mubarak announced on Egyptian television on Tuesday that the Rafah crossing will not be fully re-opened until Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, regains authority in the territory.

"We will not deepen the division and that breach [among the Palestinians] by opening Rafah border crossing in the absence of the Palestinian Authority and the European Union monitors," he said, making reference to a 2005 agreement over the border.

Jakarta rally

Thousands have also rallied in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, to voice their opposition to the Israeli assault  on Gaza.

Demonstrators waved Palestinian and Indonesian flags while some carried banners with slogans such as "Move Israel outside Palestine land".

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation and many Indonesians have been staunch supporters of the Palestinian cause.

The protest coincided with a condemnation of the raids by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesia's president.

"I have sent a letter to the secretary-general of United Nations as well as to the UN security council condemning the Israeli military attacks and urging swift action to resolve the conflict," Yudhoyono said.

"The security council must formally meet and issue a resolution to force Israel to end all attacks, so that Israeli and Palestinian can continue the peace process."

Jakarta has no diplomatic relations with Israel.

Violence in Gaza
I do not agree with the politics of groups like Hamas but I strongly believe that Israelis have been the major obstacles for peace and the reason for the current crisis. How can we blame the victims? How would you react if you were locked in your house, starved and bombed with advance weaponary any time your enemy wanted? Israel just wants peace at its own terms because it is a bully and has the support of the west especially US and more importantly has the support of several Arab puppet regimes

Massacre in Gaza
There is no comparison between Palestine and Israel. One place is under occupation and siege the other is not.

Israeli massacre
Those, like Farouq, who defend the right of Israel to defend itself forget the fact that Israel is the occupier of Palestinian land and is choking 1.5 million Gaza population into starvation. Let these peoples' homes be occupied by an outsider and then see how they defend the occupier. Leaders like Mubarak are worse than dogs in the eyes of many Musims. He can sell his mother for a few bucks in his account

How come Arabs in the Middle East do not protest the rocket attacks by Hamas? Is one act of violence more acceptable than the other? There is such a double-standard in the Middle East. It seems to be alright if you commit acts of violence as long as it's not against a fellow Arab.

Maybe we should ask the question "why the palestininans attack the israelis?" Is it because of the inhuman living conditions being forced upon them by the jews, and therefore they act upon desperation

Israel war crimes in Gaza
Farouq (United States), before you can defend Isreal, first ask "WHY", Hamas is defending the Palestinian people from an occupying army who has starved and stolen the land of the Palestinian people. Just as the U.S.A has done to the Iraq people. Israel in my opinion is a "BULLY" like the USA, thinking that "MIGHT MAKE RIGHT" and all rational people know it doesn't.

Peace an justice
Without justice the peace is imposible. How many more Palestinians must die. WhenIsrael return their land to the Palestinians. This is the first step.

Nothing else...
Egyptian people must, Must, Must force their puppet government to open up the Rafah crossing. There is nothing else to it. The rest of the Muslim world is waiting to see at least little bit of heart beat from the 70 Million strong in Egypt. If they can not do that, they should rather not call Egypt their country any more.

Up Against (and behind) a Wall
I read a lot of comments here and there and I don't see anyone mentioning the fact that when the rocket attacks were non-existent weeks ago, people in the Gaza Strip were enduring some of the worst restriction of aid to the region. Israeli's have been cutting off rations from the outside to Gaza by land and sea for weeks. Scores of people were starving. What would the Jews in the German ghettos have done if they had international attention and RPG's?

Cmon?
I agree with Farouq. Its seems the Middle Eastern countries could careless whenever they start something. Besides didn't they start the bombing first? Like when the towers fell, weren't they celebrating it? If they spent less time protesting than looking for the military group that started it, maybe they wouldn't have as much dead. Besides no country in the Middle East could stand up to any military in the world to be honest. Just be glad America is merciful.

maybe hamas is not being protested against because they have done nothing wrong. They have a right to defend thier people and land. Is that wrong? If someone is killing your children are you gonna wait and not defend them because that might be an act of TERRORISM? Please!

Arab states curb New Year events
I am a Muslim, and I pray for the Palestinians, but I can't understand the bottom line, why the hell the Arab states can't unite and achieve some peace. Do they think cancelling events will make the Gaza people any better, well no. If you guys don't give an ultimatum to Israel and unite against their aggressions anytime soon, they will eat us apart. They enjoy our defeats against each other and that is what they want for us. Little by little they might even take the whole peninsula.
