Israeli vessel hits Gaza-bound boat

Dignity was carrying aid for Gaza's beleaguered
health care system [AFP]

A small boat, damaged as it tried to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, has arrived in the Lebanese port of Tyre.

The Dignity started taking on water after it was hit by an Israeli naval vessel as it approached the Israeli coast with its cargo of medical aid.

The Free Gaza Movement, which organised the attempt to reach the territory , said their boat was "rammed" and shots were fired when at least four Israeli vessels confronted them in international waters.

Yigal Palmor, a spokesman for Israel's foreign ministry, denied there had been any shooting but said that the ships had made "physical contact".

He said that the crew of the Dignity had failed to respond to Israeli naval radio contact.

'Rammed'

Elize Ernshire, one of the activists onboard the boat, told Al Jazeera by telephone that the boat was rammed twice from the front and then once from the side.

"It has destroyed the front of the boat and the roof ... and has left the cabin, the wheelhouse quite destroyed," she said.

"... we were threatened directly by the Israeli navy that if we continued on our course towards Gaza they would attack us again"

Elize Ernshire,
activist onboard Dignity

" ... we were threatened directly by the Israeli navy that if we continued on our course towards Gaza they would attack us again."

Mark Regev, an Israeli government spokesman, said that the incident was nothing more than a "propoganda stunt".

"Israel would never have done anything against international law, that is inconceivable," he told Al Jazeera.

"These people just want a headline, they don't really want to help the people of Gaza, if they wanted to help the people of Gaza they would be asking Hamas why they initiated the violence."

Several small boats have arrived in the Gaza Strip carrying international activists and medical aid since August in defiance of the Israeli siege.

Ernshire said that the incident would not stop the movement trying again to take aid to the impoverished territory.

"The majority of passenger here are determined, once we reach Lebanon, to keep continuing to organise such boats as these, to reach the people of Gaza," she said.

Gaza's health system is struggling to cope with the casualties from four consecutive days of aerial bombardment by Israeli warplanes and helicopter gunships.

Shortages

Hospitals were already facing shortages of medicines and other medical products due to the Israeli siege imposed after the Hamas government seized full control of the territory in 2007.

As well as more than three tonnes of aid, the Dignity was carrying three doctors to help treat the more than 1,600 wounded in recent days.

Avital Leibovitz, an Israeli military spokeswoman, said that humanitarian aid was being allowed into the Gaza Strip and the medical supplies on the boat would not have made much impact on the humanitarian situation.

"Lets not talk about a blockade because it does not exist, the humanitarian corridor is active, alive and working," she told Al Jazeera.

"There are a numerous number of trucks enetring Gaza with food and medicine according to the requests of the aid organisations."

Three Al Jazeera journalists were among the 15 people onboard the boat.

"Al Jazeera holds Israel responsible for the safety of the Al Jazeera journalists and everyone on board the Dignity," Wadah Khanfar, director general of the Al Jazeera network said in a statement.

"Al Jazeera's presence on the boat is to cover the expedition for news and journalistic purposes. We are deeply concerned for the safety and well being of our journalists."

Propaganda vs. facts
Reading all comments here it seems that Israel is imposing full blockade on food or medicines. For your information: (1) dozens of trucks are crossing from Israel to Gaza, almost every day (when mortars fire allows). (2) The few tons carried on a small boat are meaningless compared to 18 tons carried by just one truck, the boat is a propaganda exercise, and (3) foreign aid is allowed provided it is first inspected at an Israeli port and then crossing by land.

Aid is reaching Gaza but not Palestinians
Aid is reaching Gaza but not Palestinians. Hamas has not allowed all the aid to be released to the Palestinians. In the past two days alone, over 200 trucks of aid has gone into Gaza. Hamas should feed its people.

How is it possible that not even aid is allowed, how is it possible that innocent children have to die & suffer, how is it possible that no big country is doing something about it. Is it ok for this to happen. This is wrong on both side Israel & Hamas but, Israel is attaking Gaza, civilians who live in Gaza. Some people are saying that they had this coming. Did the Jews had the Holocaust coming? Did the Americans had 9/11 coming? Did the D.R. Congo had this coming? The list can go on.

how long and how many times is the world going to stand by while isreal bombs its neighbours, murders civilians and increases the hatred of the isreali people by these acts of bullying. the IRA bombed the united kingdom for decades but did the british attack back with fighter jets and tanks no it didnt because they are considered a civilised nation unlike isreal, who hide behind their friend AMERICA,

Gaza aid
S.M. from the Netherlands asks how it is possible that medicine is withheld from Gaza. Well S.M. I'll tell you. Because the U.S. allows Israel to do anything or commit and criminal act it wants to. I am a very patriotic American and I love my country, but right now it is not my country. Bush and our congress are controlled by the money of U.S. Jews and the enormous control they have of all our news media. What they don't own, they control in various ways. True American

Hamas is at fault
When Hamas stops the rockets then there can be peace. Everyone knows that. Hamas is purposefully bringing death to the Palestinians in an effort to gain sympathy. Israel is well within its rights to defend itself.

Humanitarian Aid?
Was the attempt to bring humanitarian aid a publicity stunt or an attempt to bring in weapons and bombs to Hamas? The boat did not heed or reply to radio signals which is mandatory in a war zone. The Israeli Navy used their boats made of steel to divert a boat made of fiberglass. Which boat would sustain damage? In a war zone, all supplies may be subject to search for contraband. That has been a long standing practice of many nations. The activist are not exempt. There is a safe way.

BOYCOTT
Boycott all Israeli products now! Thats the only thing the Israelis will pay attention to. The money that they so love. A world wide BOYCOTT OF ALL ISRAELI PRODUCTS NOW! It will also send a message to the Iasraeli puppet, the US. A world wide boycott will mean that the US will then have to send more billions of tax payers money to Israel. Money they don't have. A WORLD WIDE BOYCOTT OF ALL ISRAELI PRODUCTS NOW!

I love all people , but the leaders of these people are the ones who are responsible for the situation , they dont consider the lives of people. Peace must be the aim and all other things must be negotiated. you have to disagree to agree and visa versa

Attack in international waters
Israel attacked this boat in international waters. Publicity stunt or not, Israel attacked a civilian boat in international waters. If that's not violating international law, how about purposefully targeting civilians. Israel says it has the most advanced pinpoint weapons. If that's the case, then any women and children they kill, they do it on purpose

Gaza Bound Boat
Why is it that Hamas/Palestine can launch daily rocket attacks on civilians in Israel and that it OK, but when Israel a tiny nation, fights back in self defense it is protested? A blockade is necessary to stop weapons from being resupplied to Gaza terrorists. Where are all the Arab nations that should and could easily get humanitarian aid to Gaza's civilians?

Aid boat rammed
To: Victor A boat not answering to radio signals? That justifies the ramming in your eyes, doesnt it? Even though there is no evidence that it is not just another lie aired by Israeli politicians? There is no evidence of the boat trying to slip by the patrol ships at night or anything like that. Therefore the excuse brought up by Israelis sounds dumb. Agree with Truthman - No to Israeli merchandise!

Support Ships to Gaza
Don't forget the "support" ship Qarin-A that carry hundreds tons of "humanitary" aid and support to Gaza that captured by the Israelis navy. It was amazing how much weapons, ammo, explosive and military equipment was cought on this ship. Is that called "Humanitary support" ? YES !! this is what the Hamas give to their citizens in Gaza instead of food, medicies and REAL support. Don't be surprised why other ships blocked in their way to Gaza.

Go in harms way
If one chooses to board a boat bound for a contested area, one must accept that there will be danger for all aboard, whether activist or journalist. If Al Jazeera is going to lay blame, it should be laid at the feet of the Captain of the Dignity. He chose to reject radio contact rather than cooperate and seek admittance.

Gaza Genocide
What good is the United Nations if it doesn't have the guts or power to stand up for the weaker countries like Palestine and demand that Israel end it's "GENOCIDE" against the Palestinian people. Oh, I forgot, they are controlled by the United States, Israel puppet master. The UN is a sham.

aid to Gaza
Avital Leibovitz states that 'the humanitarian corridor is active, alive and working'. Why is it then that a van driven all the way from Scotland carrying one and a half tons of medicines and medical equipment donated by the Scottish people was not allowed into Gaza via Rafah?

The world is blind. Blame it on Hamas!!!!
Why bame everything on Israel when Hamas started the rocket attacks. Hamas is to blame for all the suffering of the Palestinian people. they are responsible for the deaths of the Palestinians not Israel. A country has the right to defend itself from rocket attacks.

Forgetting the big picture
I think everyone is forgetting that since the end of WWI and the beginning of Zionism, the Palestinian people had their country stolen from them, caged like animals and have been told what they can and mostly cannot do on a daily basis. Of course they're going to fight back. If someone was in your front yard trying to remove you and your family from your home would you not fight? As far as the boat incident: Israel is a bully and thinks it can do whatever it pleases. Not for long.

Answer the radio
The delays of supplies into Gaza are a result of Israel's concern with arming its enemy. They are searching deliveries for smuggled arms to be fired at Israelis. It is not only Gaza supplies that are delayed for searches, everyone entering any building or restaurant in Israel is searched to ensure they are not bringing in arms to hurt someone. By the way, answer the radio and you won't be rammed. But then again, you may not get the publicity. Now, fix your yacht.

Where was the world that for the past 8 years bombs were being thrown into Israel? Where was the world when kids were suffering from the day they were born? how dare anyone point a finger at Israel! Hamas is the enemy of all Arabs and are to blame for what is happening today in Gaza.

Wil

I believe that both parties are at fault here. Although the Hamas may have initiated rocket strikes into Israel, that still does not call for the mandated suffering caused by Israel's blockade of Gaza, halting Gaza's ability to help the innocent, wounded victims that are suffering already with Gaza's crippled health care system. That brings the problem of smuggling weapons into Gaza, like Captain G said. If support ships are bringing medical supplies, they should be searched and admitted to Gaza

A messy war, is that new?
What is this s***?!?! A couple of guys on a rinky dink boat trying to be heros? You wanna be heros you have to pick a side and fight for it (There unwillingness to answer Israeli radio shows there likely pro Palestine). If they have guns for Gaza they are heros to Gaza militants. If they have medicine, they are idiots. Maybe this is propaganda, maybe thy are just idiotic heros, or maybe war is messy and when you decide to go full steam into a war zone you'd better be prepared for some consequences. =P

to gb...where was the world when palestinian land and homes were taken away from them? Where was the world when palestinians were killed trying to defend their property and their families?Where was the world when Israel took basic human rights away from the palestinians like food, water, electricity, gas, freedom and the list goes on.This is a historical problem. If you oppress a group of people so much and give them grief on a daily basis, some will give in and others will fight!

Israeli blockades Gaza
Come On People! Israel is a freedom Loving Country that was chosen by God to reclaim the land that is owed to them by God. Also, NO ONE lived over there and Israel is NOT blockading anyone and is NOT bombing any one and NO civilians are targeted. OK OK every now and then some girl, or some boy dies, but that is NOT part of the game. That does NOT count. Only Israeli lives matter. Don't you get it??

The UN is a nobody. The Israeli government thinks it is the all mightly because they are a country supported by the US surrounded by countries who cannot compete. look at the number of deaths on either side. Its time to act, and actaully do something that is causing these conflicts. Another UN resolution wont solve anything. More is need, the US have to be the ones that go enough is enough- Israel put down your guns or we'll put them down for you. but we all know that will never happen.
