Hamas vows to hit Israel harder

The warning from Hamas's armed wing came after Israel said its assault could last "weeks"

The armed wing of Hamas has said it will step up its rocket attacks on Israel if the Israeli military continues its deadly bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

"We tell the leaders of the enemy - if you continue with your assault, we will hit with our rockets further than the cities we have hit so far," a masked spokesman for Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades said in a televised statement on Tuesday.

"If you think that Hamas and al-Qassam will be crushed, we will rise up from the rubble," he said.

The Hamas statement followed Israeli warnings that the onslaught in the Gaza Strip could last for "weeks".

More than 380 people have been killed, including at least 61 women and children, in four consecutive days of Israeli bombardment and local hospitals are saying they are unable to cope with any more casualties.

"We are ready to deepen and widen the operation in order to make sure that the calm and tranquility will come back to the region"

Ehud Barak,
Israeli defence minister

On Tuesday the soaring death toll and mounting international protests led to calls from the United Nations and the European Union for both sides to agree to a 48-hour humanitarian ceasefire.

But Israel's defence minister, Ehud Barak, said that stronger action may be yet to come.

"We are ready to deepen and widen the operation in order to make sure that the calm and tranquility will come back to the region," he said.

"We believe that this is our primal contract with our citizens to protect them against terrorist attacks."

His comments were echoed by Israel's interior minister who said there would be no let up until the threat of Palestinian rockets attacks from the Gaza Strip had been removed.

"There is no room for a ceasefire," Meir Sheetrit told reporters, adding that the Israeli military would not stop its operations "before breaking the will of Palestinians, of Hamas, to continue to fire at Israel."

Four Israeli citizens have been killed by missiles fired from Palestinian positions since the Israeli offensive on Gaza began on Saturday.

Military preparations

The Israeli army has been massing infantry and armoured forces along the border amid increasing fears that a ground invasion is planned.

Matan Vilnai, Israel's deputy defence minister, said the military "has made preparations for some long weeks of action".

On Monday, areas of the border were declared "closed military zones" and thousands of reservists have been called up by the Israeli military.

"The ground forces are ready," Avital Leibovitz, an Israeli military spokeswoman, said on Tuesday.

"The option exists. It is possible that we will apply it but for the moment we are only hitting from the air and the sea."

Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting from Gaza Strip, said that the confirmation that naval vessels were now launching attacks was a further widening of the offensive.

"We undertsand they are targeting buildings and various other targets throughout Gaza," he said.

Mohyeldin said that a ground offensive would worsen the humanitarian situation for Gazans.

"A ground offensive will mean urban warfare, close proximity fighting from street-to-street ... Gaza is so densely-populated that ultimately in that kind of operation the civilian population will find themselves caught in the middle," he said.

More than 1,600 Palestinians have already been wounded in the assault and hospital are running out medicines and other products needed to treat them.

Ceasefire call

Ban Ki-Moon, the UN secretary-general, has added his voice to calls for an end to the violence.

"All this must stop," Ban told a news conference at UN headquarters in New York.

Israel says its ground forces are ready to act if it decides to enter Gaza [EPA]
"Both Israel and Hamas must halt their acts of violence and take all necessary measures to avoid civilian casualties. A ceasefire must be declared immediately. They must also curb their inflammatory rhetoric."

Mark Regev, an Israeli government spokesman, told Al Jazeera that the Israel military was was being "as surgical as it can be", while Hamas rocket attacks indiscriminately targeted civilians.

"We have been hitting Hamas command-and-control, Hamas military structures ... our target is not the innocent people of Gaza, it is only the Hamas military machine," he said.

"Our feeling towards the people of Gaza is not hostility, we see them as victims of the terrible Hamas Taliban-type regime, just as the people of southern Israel are victims."

Support for Israel came from the US, with the White House saying Hamas must halt cross-border rocket fire.

"In order for the violence to stop, Hamas must stop firing rockets into Israel and agree to respect a sustainable and durable ceasefire," Gordon Johndroe, a White House spokesman said.

palestinians are just too kind, letting outsiders live on their land like kings while they on the other hand can't even get a mouthful of food. everyone can see clearly that peace is solely in israel's hands. they have the bigger land, the bigger weapons, the bigger population, technology, everything.. so how come not the bigger upperhand to stop the war?

As long as israel keeps on being unfair on gaza, hamas will keep on doing what it's good at, keeping the war alive because by doing this with minimal weapons they are doing more damage to israel that no other weapon can do looks like isreal is loosing again...

Palestinian is very hard to defeat them
I want to tell the Israeli people, that the Palestinian fighting will not stop until our land (Palestine) is returned to us. And if you want to live in peace as what understand from your comments you can move anywhere in this world but be a way from Palestine. Please read the history and you will know that the occupied country (Israel) will not stay for ever. My advice to Israeli people you to start searching for another country.

Israelis are so funny!
Israelis are still begging for symphathy, even at this very moment when the Israel's soldier keep on bombarding Palestinian with heavy, ultra modern artilery. The Jewish living in Israel said that the Palestinian deserved it, all because of Hamas rockets. If the Israelis want to be safe, move out from Israel, the land that the jewish have taken from the Palestinian, 60 years ago. Stop begging for symphathy Israelis, there wil be no more holocaust.

dead end
I really wonder what Israel is expecting by starving 1,5 million of people, and making their life a living hell. Not mentionning the rampant colonisation that continue again and again in the West Bank. Hamas is thriving on this. Those Palestinians who lost brothers and relatives today will be the fighters of tommorow. This is the only thing israel is achieving since decades with the same old and criminal tactics…

Suffering of People..
First it was Lebanon's Hezbollah who claimed victory after so much death and destruction. Now HAMAS wants to go for a third intifada and with all this death and destruction they will claim victory. When will people learn to live with each other in PEACE. Hope it comes to them at least in the New Year. These political leaders can issue orders from their hideouts in Syria or South Lebanon, but in the end people on the ground suffer. When will they think of their people?

hamas is relentless
Hamas' founding charter clearly states the movemente's goal: to form an Islamic state in the area streaching from the Jordan River to the Meditteranean sea. In other words, the goal is to wipe Israel off the map. The charter also contains statements about the holy Islamic quest to kill all the Jews. Hamas has acted accordingly: relentless missile attacks on Israeli towns and villages, and lately - refusing to renew the ceasefire. This leaves Israel with no choice.

Dear Friends all over the World. There is no doubt that Palestinians are victims of this conflict as same as Israeli's are. But what do you suggest - ceasing fire? trying to reach agreements? What? There is no one at Damn Hamas to speak with, they are just militant group of fanatics with absolutely no goals or care for their own people. What poppycock! 350 Palestinians dead, more than 300 of them Hamas "fighters" - Genocide, war crimes? What universe are you living in mate? If Israel had used the Hamas standards of fighting, by now it would have been 350,000 Palestinians dead. Hamas is getting exactly what it deserves. Both sides are waking up & also not sleeping because of war. if u all stopped blaming each other maybe you can all work within your societies and try to make a difference. I wonder how many future suicide bombers and new Hamas supporters Israel just created. You wonder where the desperate rage of Palestinians comes from? Israel isn't stupid, it knows how to get peace if it wants it, the problem is that it doesn't want it. Shame on Israel and all that support its actions, including the so called leaders of the Arab world. And if this is the type of stunt that wins you electoral support for the February elections, what does that say about Israelis? Shame.

In spite of having lived for months in 1967 in a seven meters boat at large of southern France, proudly under israelian flag, in spite of thinking that Israel should and could exist, I see that the original dream turned out to irresponsibility, transforming Israel in a colony sustained economically and militarly by the U.S.A., objectively aiming to pursue its own policy, people emigrating to Israel just for economic reasons, and unavoidaibly leading to the lost of legitimacy to Israel existence.

The war on Gaza
It seems to me that the life of one Israeli is worth the life's of one hundred Palestinians. How come some of the Israelis posting comments here do not take notice of this fact? Of course its easy for me sitting here in peaceful Sweden to point this out but isn't it a racial slur when the lives of these civilians are not counted for. This is so ridiculous what I have to read here in most of the feedbacks! Each state that is facing rocket attacks from outside has the right to defend their country and people. Isreal and Hammas
While all of the world is busy slamming Israel on its defensive in Gaza, I think it is only fair to present your readers where this is comming from and what the real facts are. There is a Hamas terrorist state ruling Gaza, who's only interest is its own political and economical well being. They care not about the people in Gaza. They are using them for their corrupt interests and now, as a terrorist entity, they are paying for their actions. Would you tolerate such aggresion from a neighbor?

Post-traumatic synrome? Please do not make me laugh! Try living on the other side of the wall...in the prison that Israel has created. Look at the difference in death tolls between the 2 countries. If Israel would follow UN resolutions that define the borders and stop taking land that isnt theirs, problems would be minimized. What is sad is that Israel would be NOTHING without my country (USA) and they are taking advantage of a transition of presidents over here.

You couldn't be more misinformed. First of all, dozens of Israelis have been killed by indiscriminate rocket fire. And none of the women and children and civilians 'deserved it' because they are just trying to live their lives. If Hamas would stop instigating fights they can never hope to win, and invest their money and effort in furthering the Palestinian economy their lives would be much better. Hamas has vowed to fight to the death, and now they get what they asked for.

We all know that Israelies invaded a land that was not theirs. Now they have killed 360 people as a "response" to some rockets falling into their territory. Both sides have done horrible things. Saying it is the fault of one or the other without trying to see both sides and understanding there is a serious need for forgiveness is both shortsided and detrimental to the peace process. When the UK was under attack from the IRA (incidentally the same IRA who enjoyed a great deal of support in the USA), you didn't see our government bombing Northern Ireland in an indiscriminate fashion. In the end diplomacy won through. If you keep a people trapped in a city like dogs, you are bound to see recriminations. If Israel think this will end rocket attacks they are sadly mistaken. There is one solution to peace, Give the Palestines a chance, and recognize Palestine as a State. Then create strict rules and agreements contibuting towards a long term peace. Interesting words you have chosen Issacfire. You think people are angry because Israel is winning? Israel is fighting a lost war. The deterioration of the morals and ethics found at the core of their society is the cause of this. Who is to Blame?
My heart goes out to the people of Gaza. But who is to blame? If Hamas were to agree to stop firing rockets into Israel, this fighting would end. If they hadn't started in the first place, it would not have started. True that only 5 Israelis have been killed and about 400 Palestinians, but Hamas is targeting civilians and 100% of their victims are civilians. Israel is targeting Hamas and most of their victims are Hamas. The only sensible way forward is to stop fighting and start talking.

Gaza situation
By the reasoning of Hamas, the Native Americans should wage war against the US and would now be justified in re-taking mainland US. Eventually, if you love your people and don't have so much self-hatred, Hamas must recognize that it will be responsible for destroying their own people.

Why can Israel "defend" but the palestinians cannot?
How can continued agrression by Israel, new settlements, a new Berlin wall and starving a nation of food and supplies be tolerated by the palestinians. Obama said if people were raining down rockets on my daughters I would defend them. Does that include Palestinians. The world doesn't support this !
