Israeli vessel hits Gaza-bound boat

health care system [AFP]

An Israeli naval vessel has hit a small boat carrying activists trying to break the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The Dignity was reportedly taking on water as it limped towards Lebanon on Tuesday.

The Free Gaza Movement, which organised the attempt to reach the territory with more than three tonnes of medical aid, said their boat was "rammed" and shots were fired.

The group said the Dignity was in international waters about 115km off the coast of Gaza when the incident occurred late on Monday.

Yigal Palmor, a spokesman for Israel's foreign ministry, denied there had been any shooting but said that the ships had made "physical contact".

He said that the crew of the Dignity had failed to respond to Israeli naval radio contact.

'Rammed'

Elize Ernshire, one of the activists onboard the boat, told Al Jazeera by telephone that the boat was rammed twice from the front and then once from the side.

"It has destroyed the front of the boat and the roof ... and has left the cabin, the wheelhouse quite destroyed," she said.

"... we were threatened directly by the Israeli navy that if we continued on our course towards Gaza they would attack us again"

"We are heading towards Lebanon as the boat is not in a fit state to return to Larnaca [Cyprus] and we were threatened directly by the Israeli navy that if we continued on our course towards Gaza they would attack us again."

Mark Regev, an Israeli government spokesman, said that the incident was nothing more than a "propoganda stunt".

"Israel would never have done anything against international law, that is inconceivable," he told Al Jazeera.

"These people just want a headline, they don't really want to help the people of Gaza, if they wanted to help the people of Gaza they would be asking Hamas why they initiated the violence."

Several small boats have arrived in the Gaza Strip carrying international activists and medical aid since August in defiance of the Israeli siege.

Ernshire said that the incident would not stop the movement trying again to take aid to the impoverished territory.

"The majority of passenger here are determined, once we reach Lebanon, to keep continuing to organise such boats as these, to reach the people of Gaza," she said.

Gaza health system is struggling to cope with the casualties from four consecutive days of aerial bombardment by Israeli warplanes and helicopter gunships.

Shortages

Hospitals were already facing shortages of medicines and other medical products due to the Israeli siege imposed after the Hamas government seized full control of the territory in 2007.

As well as more than three tonnes of aid, the Dignity was carrying three doctors to help treat the more than 1,400 wounded in recent days.

Avital Leibovitz, an Israeli military spokeswoman, said that humanitarian aid was being allowed into the Gaza Strip and the medical supplies on the boat would not have made much impact on the humanitarian situation.

"Lets not talk about a blockade because it does not exist, the humanitarian corridor is active, alive and working," she told Al Jazeera.

"There are a numerous number of trucks enetring Gaza with food and medicine according to the requests of the aid organisations."

Three Al Jazeera journalists are among the 15 people onboard the boat.

"Al Jazeera holds Israel responsible for the safety of the Al Jazeera journalists and everyone on board the Dignity," Wadah Khanfar, director general of the Al Jazeera network said in a statement.

"Al Jazeera's presence on the boat is to cover the expedition for news and journalistic purposes. We are deeply concerned for the safety and well being of our journalists."

Al Jazeera
It is rediculous for Al Jazeera to put people aboard these blockade breaking ships and then to say they hold Israel responsible for their safety. You want them safe, keep them home.

Israels Warsaw Ghetto
Israel should take notel Gaza is the Israeli Wehrmacht's Warsaw Ghetto, the similarities are so stark between the two it is amazing that no one else mentions the fact. 20 israeli's killed in 8 years from Hamas crude weapons, the evil of the Israeli war machine is only matched by their control over the US, Britain and the world media.

dream
In spite of having lived for months in 1967 in a seven meters boat at large of Cannes in France, proudly under israelian flag, in spite of thinking that Israel should and could exist, I see that the original dream turned out to irresponsibility, transforming Israel in a colony sustained economically and militarly by the U.S.A., objectively aiming to pursue its own regional policy, people emigrating to Israel just for economic reasons, and unavoidaibly leading to the lost of legitimacy to Israel.

Israeli attack on the "Dignity"
The boat, its crew and all passengers were attempting to deliver much needed medical aid in an entirely legal manner. The incident is a disgrace but unfortunately it is not surprising that the Israeli forces feel that they can do as they please when both America and Britain stand by and allow both the murder of hundreds of Palestinians (Including many civilians)and do not condemn the intolerable living conditions that the Israel imposes on Palestinians. Well done Al Jazeera.

why you keep Lying to the world? why you dont say the truth? Israel attacked Qaza cause the Hamas send Rockets non Stop, why Al Jazeera show how poor people in Qaza? what about people in Askelon? Ashdod? Shderot? If Israel was so bad they would not allow help to come in from Turkey and Cairo, and you go ly again that they hurt the boat. STOP LYING AND HEATING MORE THE SPIRIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good
Good. What do they expect? Hamas turned Gaza into a war zone by terrorizing Israel. Israel has every right to blockade vessels that may be providing aid to Gaza. If Israel was as bloodthirsty as al jazeera trys to portray them, they would have sunk the boat.

warshaw ghetto
Ken, obviously you haven't got the faintest idea of what the warshaw ghetto was. Go, and read some books about it at least before you start to draw parallels. In fact there are large convoys on their way to Gaza to provide humanitarian supply. Yet self-importance can hardly be overweighted. I'm glad that the israeli navy reacted so responsible.

We need to stop expecting Israel to show mercy and think about fighting to defend ourselves. Israel continues to violate all international rules and the Palestinians continue to die, the smallest nation in the world who Israel have cowardly cordon off and they still can't defeat them. rise up and take ur stand.

They brought it on themselves
For 8 years the people of Southern Israel have been subjected to missiles landing on their houses. All this after Israel evicted Israeli from their homes in Gaza in good faith that it would help advance peace in the region. Hamas has proven that when you give them an inch they try to grab a mile. Its a pity that they have to bring such destruction on the majority of the Palestinians that want to lead a peaceful life.

Isreal, terrorist state
The action of the Isrealis in Gaza first by blockading the strip both from land and sea for more than a yr and then heavy area bombardment for the past four days is no more than an action by terrorist state which Isreal is. Livni and other Isreal jews officials should be tried for commiting crime against humanity.

who hit who?
If they wanted to help, why to do so with journelists? maybe they are only looking for headlines? Who much "aid" did they send to Chechnya during their war for freedom?!

Dignity Rammed
Israel has plunged to new depths of inhumanity - a medical supply boat rammed in INTERNATIONAL WATERS, while the carnage goes on in Gaza!

Why am I not surprised. For Avital Leibovitz to say that the medical supplies would not have made any impact is to show Israel's inhuman face. I can hardly contain my disgust at a so called democracy behaving this way. And where is the so called ME envoy? I bet he's enjoying his festivities while the already impoverished Palestinians are dying. Blood on your hands and collective conscience so called international community.

israel Ramms relief vessel
Another example of Israel's Shameless, inhumane & desperate attack on any help that comes Palestines way.!! Peace should be acted upon & not just uttered, as in the case of israel. And history is the evidence.

propaganda
how can they say they've never done anything against international law when they build a wall condemned by the international court of justice? how can they say that when they forbid humanitarian convoy to enter and help gaza people, which is against international humanitarian law? do they think that people around the world are so dumb to believe them?

Shameful Act
What a shameful act by Isreali military and much more shameful is the silence from USA and Arab World. Infact responsibility of killing 250 innocent lives in Gaza more lies on these shameful, arogant and pupet govenrments of middle east.

israel vessel hits gaza bound boat
Seems like journalists are not wanted to view the destruction of Palestinian infrastructure and citizens. Mark Regev should realise Hamas is upset because the blockade has never been relaxed as per the terms of the truce. Instead of relaxation the noose has been tightened and now trucks are let in while the massacre takes place for a publicity stunt. 3.5 tonnes of medical supplies wouldnt make much difference? At this rate of killing i am sure it would have.
