Israeli troops 'shot at from Syria'

Israeli troops in the occupied Golan Heights have come under small arms fire from Syria, Israeli military officials have said.

No one was injured in the incident on Sunday, but it was been reported to the United Nations force that monitors the area, an Israeli army spokesman said.

"In the afternoon, there were a number of bullets fired from Syria at an Israeli army force doing engineering work near the fence," he said.

"No one was hurt but a vehicle was damaged.

"Forces in the field are examining the incident and a complaint was sent to UNDOF which sent a team there. The circumstances of the incident are still unclear."

The Israeli military spokesman said that Israeli troops did not return fire.

There was no immediate comment on the incident from Damascus.

On alert

Israeli forces along the country's northern borders have been on alert since the aerial and ground assault on the Gaza Strip, that has killed nearly 900 Palestinians, began 16 days ago.

Three rockets were fired from Syria's neighbour Lebanon on Friday, an attack that Israeli and Lebanese officials blamed on Palestinian refugees.

There have been angry protests in Syria, which is home to a number of exiled Palestinian Hamas leaders, over Israel's actions in the territory.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and later annexed the area although the move has not been recognised internationally.

Syria began Turkish-mediated indirect peace talks with Israel last year. Damascus said it had broken off the negotiation after Israel began to bombard the Gaza Strip.

Israeli troops shot at from Syria
I think the Syrians are looking for a way to trigger a war with Israel using their right to reclaim the occupied Golan Heights as Israel hasn't complied with the UN R regarding the Golan Heights. Additional reason would be to support the Palestinians in Gaza. If a war is triggered by either side Syria is the party that is most likely to stand with victory especially with the support of Iran as both countries have military agreement in case of war forced upon either one. Victory = region control

Time to fight armies not women and children
It is time for the Jews to confront a real army, not unarmed women and children. Thinking properly, Gaza is a shame in many ways...

more israeli ridiculousness
The israelis have some audacity. They shoot and kill UN aid workers but report shootings to the UN that damaged their vehicle. Only colonial states like israel can be so blatantly self-contradicting.

Susy, remember what happen last time all sorrounding countries attacked Israel ? .. try harder, that's not such a good idea. Carlos from Cuba, was Syria looking for an excuse to recover the Golan for 42 years?? and now found it ?.. no so clever though. Norberto from Argentina, you are absolutely right, it's time for the Jews to confront an army, and not a bunch of cowards hiding between woman and children, it really is time to start fighting like real men. MajidUmma,US??, Colonialism?

human rights
Last night on our T.V they interviewed someone from Paris and she said that israel Cannot be put up for war crimes as they don’t belong or did not sign something so they can do what they want and the world cannot do anything about it. The rest of the world esp. Russia China and Iran should learn from this. The rules of war does not exist anymore

I feel totally ripped off. I have supported the Jews and felt shattered about the struggles and injustices they have had to deal with. But now I feel that all of that was for nothing because they Jews or Zionists are doing to their half brothers and sisters what the Germans could never do. Shame and really sad- the oppressed becomes the oppressor!
