Israel deepens Gaza incursion

many areas in the Gaza Strip in ruins [EPA]

The Israeli military has made its deepest push into Gaza since the beginning of its assault on the Palestinian territory.

Explosions from heavy aerial bombardment continued on Tuesday and fierce gunfire could be heard as ground troops moved into densely-populated areas of the Strip.

Al Jazeera reported that the heaviest fighting between Israeli and Palestinian fighters was in Tal al-Hawa, in the south of Gaza City.

Clashes were also reported in Beit Lahiya, to the north of the city, and east of Khan Younis.

Al Jazeera's Sherine Tadros, reporting from Gaza City, said there was an intensification of Israeli ground operations, with reservists moving in to support regular ground forces.

The AFP news agency reported Israeli tanks, supported by warplanes, had moved into several southern neighbourhoods of Gaza City and that Palestinian fighters were responding with mortar fire.

A spokesman for the Palestinian health ministry said dozens of calls for ambulances had been received, but none could be dispatched because of the fighting.

Combat continued despite another day of pleas from both the United Nations and the European Union to stop the violence, which has so far killed 940 Palestinians and wounded 4,300 others.

Civilians make up around 40 per cent of casualties, with the majority of those being women and children.

Expressing frustration at the failure of both sides to adhere to a legally binding UN resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, said he planned to step up diplomatic efforts to end Israel's air and ground offensive in Gaza and Hamas rocket fire into southern Israel.

"To both sides, I say: just stop, now," the UN chief told a news conference on Monday. "Too many people have died. There has been too much civilian suffering. Too many people, Israelis and Palestinians, live in daily fear of their lives."

Israeli goal

But Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, said the offensive which includes the latest deployment of reservists into Palestinian neighbourhoods, must continue until Hamas is completely disarmed.

Ban Ki-moon,
UN secretary-general

He said the military operation would end once Hamas's military wing halted its rocket attacks.

"We want to end the operation when the two conditions we have demanded are met: ending the rocket fire and stopping Hamas's rearmament. If these two conditions are met, we will end our operation in Gaza," he said in the southern Israeli town of Ashkelon.

Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin reporting on the devastation in Rafah late on Monday said the continuous shelling had reduced the city to rubble and the Israeli military had been dropping leaflets warning local residents to flee.

He said the human suffering was compounded by the 18-month Israeli blockade that had led to a food and fuel shortage.

Al Jazeera's Zeina Awad, reporting from the Israel-Gaza border, said there were no signs of the war ending despite the huge humanitarian toll on the residents.

Hamas resolve

The Israeli military said air raids were carried out on at least 25 targets across the Gaza Strip and Shimon Peres, the Israeli president, said on Monday that the army had "achieved in 16 days what no other country in the world fighting terror has done in 16 years".

But the Palestinian fighters fired nearly 30 rockets across the border into southern Israel on Monday, according the an Israeli army spokesman, and Hamas said it would continue to battle Israeli troops inside Gaza.

Ismail Haniya, the Hamas leader and ousted Palestinian prime minister, said from Gaza City that Israel would not emerge victorious.

"This holy blood that has been spilt will never be in vain, it will make the victory. The children's and women's blood and bodies will be a curse which will haunt this occupation," he said.

Khaled Meshaal, Hamas's political leader in exile, said: "The Palestinian resistance is standing steadfast on the battlefield as it is in the political arena.

"The resistance cannot be broken in the face of the Israeli aggression, nor can our resolve despite the deep wounds, the great pains, the massacres, the destruction, the punishments and mass killings."

Way to End Gaza Conflict
The only way to stop war on Gaza or Gaza and Israil conflict is to provide more and powerful weapons to hammas. The only way to end any war is the balance of power. if there is no balance of power israil will attack again by any reason

What about some balance here? Or this another racist propaganda site posing as a news service? Almost all the material here (which I have no problem with) is from a Palestinian point of view. Your lack of a more in-depth Israeli perspective makes this a propaganda piece. The underlying subtext is either ignorance or racist. Please be more mindful if you want to be taken seriously as a news service.

Watch the AmerIsraelis Murder their Legacy
Long live the Gazans. The humble, I am sure, shall inherit the Earth. Any gun, whether held by an American or an Israeli, points in two directions. When a bullet is fired, it is not a problem for the dying child: it is a problem for the person whose fingers squeezed the trigger, and for his children, and for their children after them. These truths are inviolate.

The Egyptian proposal
As an international opinion I believe that Hamas can accept the Egyptian proposal with reservation that if Israel will launch distinct and unlawful aggression to the Palestinian Authority including Hamas from now, the PA would exert the right of resistance. *I personally admit the arming right of the PA (which admits 'Two-State' )and cannot admit that of Hamas (which doesn't admit 'Two-State').

Hamas showed their true face today
Hamas showed their true face today. When Israel opened the border to let humanitarian aid in to the civilians. What did Hamas fighters do? Hijack the trucks and sell the goods to the highest bidder. That just proves Hamas does not care about its people, it just cares about it self. And uses the civilians and shields and a way to make money now from the way it looks. Then they complain when their civilians go hungry. They just want more trucks to hijack and steal from thier people.

No doubt. No country is as savage and as cruel as Israel. Massacring defenseless children and women in name of fighting terror is a kind of achievement which could only be achieved by war criminals. Shimon Peres’s comments regarding massacre in Gaza is direct admission of crime against humanity.

Deepening lies are exposing the Israeli government as wanting nothing but conflict in the region to justify their dominant military position. Peace for Israel will mean a need to end occupation, reduce their offensive capability, and drop their threatening stance and rhetoric, something that the Zionists amongst their leaders will not accept. It is a shame that the true Jews are not allowed to rule their country and stop the policy of lies.

Destruction of gaza
The Israelis are again acting as gods chosen, their incursion into Gaza show the same contempt for life as the Genocide in general. Deprivation, discrimination and long slowly planned destruction of a community of 1,5 million people and now an attach carried out with ballistic weapons in highly populated areas, leaves the question should the US Air force flatten little Italy to eradicate the mafia from US soil

Shimon Peres
Shimon Peres recently said that Israel has achieved more in 16 days than other countries have in 16 years fighting terror. I think all they have done is created more enemies, strengthened people's resolve and made a complete joke of their adminstration.

terrorism
How could just the Israeli President say that they are fighting terrorism and so proud of what they are doing, even though the fact is that they terrorize Palestinian civilian. Fear and trauma to these people will last even the war will end. Similarly to what other commentator said, if just the Arab country suspends their supply to the west. Then atlast they did something useful. if they can't do this because of some circumstances, then they must do somethings much better.

Arab governments failed and they all should leave office!
As an Arab and Muslim I salute Turkey and Venzuela for their moral stand on Gaza masscre. Arab dictators proved incapable of defending the Muslim and Arab people. They have conspired against the Arab people and the people need to deal with them without delay. Muslims and Arabs should work with Turkey to restore the Ottoman Empire.

I will ,in my own way advise both parties to stop this blood shed.Isreal or Gaza are same people created by GOD ALMIGHTY,so why this . Mother Thresa stated that "we should all live together as one people or die together as fools" Please world leaders should advise both sides to know the relationship between human life and animal life. Let live in peace and with peace so as to appreciate what GOD HAS DONE FOR MANKIND.

WHY ISRAEL ALONE?
Why do people keep on condemning Isrealis afterall the whole assault was started by Hamas. After several warnings which yielded no result, Israel had to defend themselves by deepening their action into Gaza city.I feel sorry for the civilians but what else could be done as a means of protection. The worst is that Hamas is not ready to halt despite the several assaults. This is absolute madness.

hypocrisy
How can anyone, in support of the Israelis, condone attacks on children? Are you people really suggesting that children can be terrorists? Isn't it obvious that the world is standing up in outrage for a good reason? At this disturbing stage in the game, all Israeli supporters should be ashamed of themselves, especially if they have children of their own.

This conflict was started by Hamas firing rockets into Israel. Israel has attacked Hamas to make them stop killing Israeli women and children. Don't provoke Israel and they will not attack you.

Israels inhuman and barbaric actions cannot break the resolve of brave Palestanian people.paelstanians have once again proved that instead of looking towards USA and its allies, they can overcome Israeli terror with their own strenght and courage.Ironically, response of muslims world,Particulary Arab world has been disappointing and discouraging.Cant OIC, send its military force to Gaza, for the defence of innocents there?Cant Egypt open its Rafah border?cant Gulf states cut oil supplies to Israel

War on Gaza
Israelis have killed hundreds of civilians in Gaza. But they are still blood-thirsty. They have called in the reservists to perpetrate the massacre of Gazans and their land. The seeds of their destructin are contained in their arrogance. Jews were the chosen people of God who rewarded them with their destined land. Because of their vilest sins God took it away from them and gave it to His grateful children. History is going to repeat itself. There will be a second wailing wall soon.

What hamas doing is wrong
Hamas sending simple tin-can rockets to Israel is wrong. In fact Hamas must send their rockets with White Phosphorous or any other Chemical Weapons that Israel is launching to them. Then only this can be called as a War, and compare the power / winner / loose. Otherwise this looks like a Thug attacking innocent

What would you do?
What would you do if your neighbour country, who promised in his manifest to destroy all habitants of your country....., after a pause of 1/2 year starts again to launce dayly 20-30 rockets on innocent citizins, woman and children? Israel waited one week to take action. How they should react? With a simple gun against rockets and mortars? In Israel are democratic choses Moslim mayors and live 30 % moslims and jews peaceful together. Hamas has killed more Palestanians than Israel !!
