Gaza mourns as strikes continue

Residents holding foreign passports were allowed to leave through the Erez crossing [AFP]

Thousands of Palestinians have taken to the streets of Gaza to mourn a Hamas leader and his family killed in an Israeli raid.

Nizar Rayyan was assassinated on Thursday along with 14 members of his family.

His funeral was held in the Jabaliya refugee camp on Friday as Israeli military aircraft continued their sorties overhead.

The toll over the first seven days of Israel's aerial bombardment on Gaza has now reached 428, with the latest casualties including three children who had been playing outside.

Israel continued to bomb ground near its boundary clearing it of landmines, increasing speculation that a ground offensive is imminent. Israel says its war is against Hamas in response to rockets fired into the south of the country.

Watch our coverage of the war on Gaza
Israel briefly opened the Erez crossing to let about 440 residents with foreign passports leave.

Most residents remain trapped within Gaza, suffering severe food and power shortages after two years of an Israel-imposed blockade.

Tanks, armoured vehicles and troops have been massed along the boundary for the best part of a week, but so far there is no sign as to when they will roll in.

Gaza medical sources say the number of Palestinians wounded, many of them women and children, is now in excess of 2,100.

Palestinian factions launched seven rockets on Friday, some landing as far as the port city of Ashdod, more than 30km from Gaza. An Israeli woman was injured in the rocket fire, the Israeli army said.

Jacky Rowland, Al Jazeera's correspondent reporting from southern Israel, said: "This is two days of very heavy bombing, particularly in the north now, which has made people wonder whether this could be a foretaste of a ground offensive.

"It could be that Israeli forces are trying to clear any obstacles, notably landmines that could potentially lie in the path of advancing tanks if and when the ground offensive begins.

"But the real question now is not if, but when. Many people in Israel are wondering 'what are we waiting for'."

Meanwhile Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, said on Friday that the US was working towards a "durable and sustainable ceasefire" but that any such ceasefire would not allow a “reestablishment of the status quo ante" where Hamas could continue to launch rockets.

Rice also heavily criticised Hamas for rejecting a truce and accused the group of holding the inhabitants of Gaza hostage, saying Hamas "has made it very difficult for the people of Gaza to have a reasonable life".

Talking to Al Jazeera, Osama Hamdan, a senior Hamas official in Beirut, said that the party to be blamed for the present situation is Israel, not Hamas.

"It's clear now that Israelis are blocking all the political solutions. The main question is supposed to be what will be the right end for this? And the clear answer is ending the occupation."

Hazem Abu Shanab, a Fatah leader, also stressed the need for a political solution.

"We don't want to die under the Israeli aggression and occupation. We want the international community and the Americans to tell the Israelis to stop the bloodshed over our people," he said.

"We want to be free and we want to be just like other people."

Hamas leader killed

In the strikes on Thursday, Israeli jets pounded the border town of Rafah in the south of the territory and the Jabaliya refugee camp to the north.

Rayyan is the most senior Hamas official killed in the current Israeli offensive
A single one-tonne bomb dropped from an Israeli jet destroyed the home of Rayyan,  the most senior Hamas official killed since Israel unleashed its bombardment.

Hamas officials hit back at Israel after the attack saying the assault on Gaza would fail.

"The blood of Sheikh Nizar Rayyan and the blood of other martyrs will never be wasted and the enemy will pay a heavy price for the crimes it has committed," Ayman Taha, a Hamas official, said.

Ayman Mohyeldin, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Gaza, said the killing of Rayyan comes at a time when international organisations are saying Israel's policy of bombing the homes of Hamas leaders is against international law.

"While they may be targeting senior members of the factions and military wings, these organisations say there is no doubt that there are families there and they are in residential neighbourhoods," he said.

"As we have seen in this particular strike, it was a direct hit in the heart of the Jabaliya camp, the most densely populated in Gaza, home to 70,000 Palestinians."

Israel says its assault on Gaza is aimed at ending persistent Hamas rocket attacks from the enclave, but its offensive has sparked international condemnation and protests around the world.

In Jerusalem on Thursday, a coalition of left-wing parties and peace groups voiced their opposition to the raids with a protest in front of the Israeli prime minister's home.

The protesters called for an immediate end to the assault, saying the escalation of violence was a disaster for both sides.

Meanwhile Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's prime minister, has called for an immediate ceasefire from both sides.

"Our call to Israel now is to halt its fire and to the other side to stop firing rockets and other attacks," he said after talks with Egypt's president in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Desperate Gazans

With Israel continuing to pound Gaza, the situation for Gaza residents is becoming increasingly desperate.

Israeli tanks and troops have been massing at the Gaza border [AFP]
Most of the 1.5 million people in the densely populated enclave have no means of sheltering from the raids, and humanitarian groups say supplies of food and fuel are running dangerously low.

Hospitals have also reported shortages of even the most basic medicines and say they have no more capacity to deal with the growing numbers of casualties.

On Thursday, however, Tzipi Livni, the Israeli foreign minister, denied suggestions there was a humanitarian crisis in the Strip, adding "and therefore there is no need for a humanitarian truce".

Livni was speaking in Paris after talks with the Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, whose call for a 48-hour ceasefire to allow in humanitarian aid has been rejected by Israel.

"Israel has been supplying comprehensive humanitarian aid to the Strip ... and has even been stepping this up by the day," the Israeli foreign ministry quoted Livni as saying.

Karen Abu Zayed, the commissioner for the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza, said that in eight years of working in Gaza the need for aid had "never been so acute".

"I am appalled and saddened when I see the suffering around me," she said, adding UNRWA has made an emergency appeal for $34m to help the Gaza population.

Hasan Khalaf, Gaza's assistant deputy health minister, described the ongoing assault on Gaza as "an Israeli massacre".

"There is no comparison between what we have and what [Israel] are doing to us. The international community are standing unable to help us, and yet we know they have been helping Israel for tens of years.

"Even now they are comparing those getting scared in the south of Israel, and those buried under the rubble after having their houses bombarded."

why?
I have a question for you. Why doesn't Hamas just quit lobbing rockets into Israel? All I have seen is Israel retaliate in response the aggression from Hamas. I would do the same as Israel has done, as would anybody else. Don't tell me that Hamas is not to blame. They call for the destruction of Israel, as do many other Arab countries. I'm not saying that America nor Bush is perfect, I would say far from it. But if Hamas quits lobbing rockets, I believe Israel will quit the aerial assault.

Hamas hits those settling on Palestinian land, so Israel must stop saying they are defending, rather, they should say they are defending and protecting occupiers.

Gaza attack
I think the so called human rights are really based on how much riches you have and how mighty you are. Is there any difference between the death of an Israeli, Americans or a Palestinian? I think it is vast. Death of one Israeli is equivalent to thousands of Palestanians! I want to know how many dead bodies are needed for the world to say that Israel is severely violating human rights. Indeed, I have no respect for the so-called human rights, which cannot measure the death of all people with the same scale.

Serry's interview
Mr Serry, the UN representative for the Middle East, chooses to ignore the fact that Hamas was fairly elected by the people of Palestine in 2006. Hamas then attempted to form a government of national unity but this attempt was sabotaged by G.W. Bush who refused to recognise the people's choice. If a PLO government is installed in Gaza against the wishes of the Palestinians it could lead to greater internal conflict. The US sponsored policy of refusing to speak to Hamas should be reversed.

Desperate civilians
The lives of the Palestinians in Gaza are miserable because their elected government is despotic and has made war with Israel its principle agenda item. Hamas leadership is as stupid as the Georgian leadership who picked a fight with Russia, or Zimbabwe leadership that is at war with itself. Democracy gives people the blessing to select their leaders and the curse live under their rule. Usually the blessings outweigh the curse. Perhaps it is time to bring back Abu Mazen?

Do they know what humanity is?
It's so easy for all you who reside in the West. How can you sit in your cosy and warm homes ever possibly relate to these people! You think Hamas brought this upon Gaza? Then what have those thousands of innocent children, women, and elderly people ever done to anyone but live a life of fear? You say Hamas are the terrorists who need to be taken out, my response is, the soilders in this land are the real terrorists. Think for once how would you react to soldiers with arms outside your homes, not so cosy now is it!

Israel - an apartheid state
Israel is an agressive state that does not want peace. It has refused to apply resolution 242 of the UN security Council. It has illegally colonized Palestinian occupied land with ultra-religious fanatics. It has cut the water supply to Palestinians in favor of the illegal colonies. it Is an apartheid state building a new Berlin wall. Israel wants peace? Cheap talk.

Bombardment
Hamas is to blame, because it continues to fire rockets at Israel. Israel is to blame, because it continues to allow Jewish extremists to settle on Palestinian land despite promises not to do so. The PNA is to blame, because its corruption resulted in Hamas's election win. At some point, everyone needs to get beyond the blame game and look for a peaceful settlement. The problem is that too many people, on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides, want victory, not a settlement.

Y'all need to understand history
It's depressing seeing the simplistic comments coming from fellow Americans. With 4 israelis dead and ~400 Palestinians killed how can anyone be so stupid as to blame the victim? How would you feel if you were thrown out of your home? This is what happened to the Palestinians.

You must really be living an isolated life to say that the Palestinians have themselves to blame!! Really do you know the history of this land! Perhaps you should open your eyes as well as your heart. Palestine is & has been robbed of their land by force & you wonder why they are fighting back! Would you sit back & watch someone take your home, kill your family & humiliate you!! I doubt that their is'nt a single Palestinian who has'nt seen a family member die! Democracy has its consequences
Just as the United States populace has suffered economically, militarily, and has lost a great deal of it's prestige by electing Bush twice so to have the Palestinians suffered (and I am not saying one is in any way equal to the other). Are we to believe that the electorate was so dumb or arrogant that it didn't expect exactly this outcome? A majority of Palestinans and Israelis favor a 2 state solution, this conflict only benefits Iran and religious extremeist on both sides.

Ignorance is exponentially increasing
Some of you Americans are just as ignorant as your president or maybe even more. Hamas in the last 6 months has tried to keep to the truce. One of the conditions of the truce was to stop the blockade on Gaza, however the blockade increased over the last 6 months, so I ask you who broke the truce? In response to this (imagine, food, medicine, water and basic necessities being blocked for 6 months), wouldn't you fire rockets at them. Look at the last 60 year history of Israel and its military.

Looks like you're missing the point here. Hamas is to be blame?! That's ridiculous! Israel is the one who provoke the Hamas by continuing the settlement in Gaza and blockading the humanitarian relief. If Israel discouraged and prohibited those moves, the Hamas would never launch rockets and will renew the truce. Also, if Israel is really sincere in stopping the Hamas, they shouldn't include the innocent Gazans. For God sake, they've massacred hundreds of innocent civillians.

I do not know why the modern civilizations are not doing enough to stop this masecare? At this point I am not concerned with who started this war, but I am really amazed with Israeal's level of hostility against the general, innocent populations of Gaza. Who in the world with a right mind believes that Israeal is a civil society and and the leaders of this state are the blievers of humanity and religion?

Actually, this confrontation brought on by the Hamas against Israel has been fotunate that very few lives have been lost. I think Israel has done a tremendous job in collateral damage. The Arabian community should unite with Israel and with the job they are doing in protecting their fellow Palestinians!!! Down with Hamas.

Shame on Isreal
It's sad how many people go and say "well they attacked first". This is about the displacement and mistreatment of millions of people who leagally and rightfully lived on land for thousands of years. These people had their homes their businesses and in many cases posessions and livelyhoods stolen from them. Now you fault them for having resorted to desperation tactics when they are starving, cornered and being constantly intimidated. These people fight for the rights they deserve.

For every Israeli , 100 palestinians die. Because both parties are using their best weapon and it just so happened that Israel has a better one. It is that simple. Human right thing is non-sense when there is a real war. You eliminate your enemy with all you have. Forget humanity. Hamas has yet to understand that.

dont forget the roots of the problem
Hamas was democratically elected in fair elections. In the beginning, it looked as if they were going to become moderate mainstream, but internationally they were ignored. Then, Israel sealed off Gaza for 2 years leaving the entire populace in poverty and on the edge of starvation. Now Israel bombs Gazans and their public service infrastructure called "Hamas buildings" to justify their bombing. If ineffective rocket attacks by Hamas on S Israel are grounds for war, then what of Israel's actions?

This article really is a shame, honestly to compare "scared citizens" of Israeli south to Palestinians under rubble. What do you think happens when Palestinians shoot rockets at Israel? No one gets hurt? Maybe if the Palestinians stopped their antagonist behaviour there would be no need for Israeli retaliation. Three million in the Strip and none of them seem to have learned by now. You will not win any war by force. The Palestinians only have themselves to blame and it seems they don't learn!

Let's not forgt that theres more to this conflict than Hamas firing rockets.Gaza has been under 'siege' by the Israelis for a while and life in Gaaza has a been a daily hardship as the people struggled to feed and educate themselves. Slaughtering of Muslim in Palestine
1 Isreali killed is equivalent to the massacre 0f 300 muslims. A ruin of 1 Isrealis Home is equivalent to ruin of 400 Muslim Homes. I think this sounds very fair to the Americans and Isrealis. So to all Muslims - Wakeup !!! Especially the Arabs!!!

Seeing the death of children is an ugly site. It's a shame Palestinians do not take matters into their own hands. Get rid of Hamas! Find a way to make peace with Israel and move on with your life. Rockets will not result in the disappearance of Israel - it's a done deal. Hamas is abusing Palestine and its people for their own political agenda, leaving Israel without much choice. I was tought in school about the American Revolution is that the Americans stood up for the British and demanded their freedom and independence. Were the Americans then terrorists? I don't think so. A quick look to the past 60 years or so shows that Israel occupied Palestine which caused the Palestinians to be kicked out of their homes and be deprived from their freedom. So this latest episode of violence wasn't just born. This is a result of 60 years of occupation

In 1947 the UN voted to partition Palestine. No arab countries voted for the partition. none.
