Worldwide protests denounce Israel

Demonstrators in Srinagar continue to rally against Israeli air strikes in Gaza [AFP]

Angry protests against Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip are continuing throughout the world, with large demonstrations in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Rallies in other countries are set to take place later on Saturday, with a protest in the United Kingdom expected to be attended by thousands of people.

Protesters in Kabul pumped their fists into the air and shouted slogans against Israel and the United States, while in Srinagar activists burned an effigy of Ehud Olmert, Israel's prime minister.

In Ramallah in the West Bank, Palestinians seeking national unity marched through streets and there were clashes with riot police.

'Killer Israel'

In Ankara, Turkey's capital, about 5,000 people shouted "killer Israel" during an anti-Israeli rally as anger mounted in a country traditionally considered an ally of Israel.

The demonstration is the second largest in Turkey in as many days.

The protesters, who turned out in freezing weather, shouted "resist and win freedom" in support of Hamas.

Many waved Palestinian flags and wore headbands with Arabic scripts.

The fighting has troubled Turkey's efforts to help broker peace between Israel and its Arab opponents, forcing Turkey to suspend its mediation between Israel and Syria and leading to resignations by some of Turkey's politicians from a Turkish-Israeli friendship group.

In Britain, about 18 protests across the country, the largest being held in London, are expected to draw up to 20,000 during the day.

Nadim Baba, Al Jazeera's correspondent in the British capital, said protest organisers were expecting a big turnout.

Global outrage

On Friday, riot police clashed with protesters in Jerusalem and in the Jordanian capital Amman, firing teargas to push back hundreds of demonstrators marching towards the Israeli embassy. Several protesters were beaten and arrested by police.

More than 10,000 people marched through Indonesia's capital carrying banners and Palestinian flags.

The demonstrators gathered in the city centre to pray for the
safety of Palestinians before marching to the US embassy, which was guarded by hundreds of police.

Protests were also held in other Indonesian cities after Friday prayers.

In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood called for marches nationwide. Hundreds of riot police were deployed around key mosques in Cairo in anticipation of the protests.

Egyptian police also detained 40 members of the Muslim Brotherhood, security officials said.

Thousands of people were out in Istanbul to support the Palestinians and show their outrage at Israel.

In Australia, more than 4,000 people gathered in the Parry Park in Sydney.

Five local mosques had closed, asking worshippers to attend the vigil instead of the traditional Friday prayers.

Ibrahim Abu Mohammad, a local imam, led the service, urging Israel to recognise a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and agree to a ceasefire.

"Israel is committing an act of terrorism. It's the duty of all the free people in the world to stand against it and stop this evil," he said.

Hundreds took to the streets of the Bangladesh capital Dhaka after the Friday prayers and in the Philippines, dozens of demonstrators gathered in Manila, accusing Israel of war crimes.

In the Pakistani capital Islamabad, demonstrators called on the Arab and Muslim world to stop what they called the massacre committed against the population of Gaza.

Protest denouncing Israel
In Gaza, there is a humanitarian crisis that concerns us all. The world needs to pressure Israel to stop this immediately and to get out of the region for the sake of the entire planet. Peace is needed and military might is NOT the answer. Israel MUST give back land, and stop acting as if they are the oppressed.

ISRAELI SHORT-SIGHTEDNESS
Although Israel has the overwhelming superiority in firepower, they don't have quite the advantage they think they do. The ongoing oppression in Gaza and the vicious, often indiscriminate, assault now taking place is only strengthening the resolve of Palestinians. Yes, the Israelis may achieve a devastating blow to Hamas, but they are only fostering growing dislike for Israel in the region and around the world. A whole new generation of fighters will rise from the ashes.

No to peace = yes to war
The Arabs and other Muslims protest only the Israeli assault (which is bad indeed) but never call on Hamas to cease their firing at Jewish civilians and renounce the 'jihad' so-called "Holy" plan to win back the whole of Palestine by war. I wonder if all the protesters understand that they are in fact supporting more war for generations.

Muslim Disgrace
Every time I see pix of protesters against the Hamas/Israeli war, I am confused. Where is Arab aid for Gaza?! The USA and EU through Israel is providing more aid to Gazans than all of the Arab world combined including that coming into Gaza from Egypt. And where is the outrage at the killing of 1000's of innocents from attacks on civilians by Islamic fanatics in Irag, Afghanistan Pakistan and recently in India to name just a few?!

Protests against Israel
Israel has crossed all lines of civilized conduct of nations and rules of war. The unrepentant massive deployment of air power against dense civilian habitation is deliberate crime against humanity. The aggression is pre-planned timed to close with the Bush era and tacitly abetted by Hosni Mubarak and Abbas. How useless the is UN is revealed time and again. West is doing all to breed terrorism. Why blame Iran for its role?

To Arab leaders
Learn something from these demonstrators and stop your meetings and being puppets to Western behaviors. Get out of your palaces and walk with your populations towards Gaza, shut down Israeli embassies in your nations, shut down your oil taps going to the West which end up in Israel and send all the EU/USA employees back home in protest. Arab Leaders behave like Salah ad-Din ibn Ayyubi. Saudi Arabia you shut down your oil taps in 1973 - do it again.

Israeli-Hamas
I think it is very hard for both sides right now. On one hand what do you do if someone is firing rockets at you everyday, and killing your people (this is happening to Israelis). On the other, when you are killing mostly women and children you have crossed a line that is unacceptable.(Hamas) I will say it again. Jerusalem should be guarded by the UN as a international city because three out of five major religions are based there. Let us look to compromise at all costs, not winning at all costs.

Rally in Indonesia
I saw that the Friday rally in Jakarta, Indonesia involved more than 100,000 (yes, one hundred thousand) people, but more importantly there are so many people ready to go to Gaza to help fellow Muslims. Latest news said that some of them already had reached Cairo and Jordan.

Hamas
All Hamas has to do is proclaim Israel's right to exist, stop shooting missiles at innocent civilians, and be nice boys and girls. Until that happens, Israel will continue to wipe them off the face of the Earth. Happy martyrdom!

No credibility
The protesters lack credibility. Either they are too closely associated with terrorists themselves (Pakistan is home to the Mumbai and London terrorists, Philippines is home to the Bali terrorists…and so on) or they are elements of the radical anti-Semitic left. The facts in this anti-Hamas war are such that most rational human beings irrespective of religious or political persuasion recognize it as just. The human tragedy is real protesters should target the culpable agents Hamas.

Let them shout
Well, all these people just shout, having flags raised and burn flags. Thats all. It will change nothing. Why? This is all a matter of big business, big money. The West is still having the most economical power - if a blockade against the poor Eastern countries realy would take place - all will go down very quick. So that's the reason you will not hear any critical comment from India, China, the Arab world.

If the Muslims had no guns there would be no war. If the Jews had no guns there would be no Israel.
