Israel seizes West Bank land
Palestinians and peace activists have protested against Israeli settlements [GALLO/GETTY]

Israel has taken control of a large area near a prominent settlement in the Palestinian West Bank, paving the way for a possible construction of 2,500 settlement homes, officials have said.

Oded Revivi, the mayor of Efrat, said on Monday that the Israeli military has designated 425 acres near the settlement of about 1,600 families south of Jerusalem, as so-called
state land two weeks ago.

Revivi said Efrat plans to build 2,500 homes on that land, but government approval would still be needed before construction begins, a process that could take years.

Eventually, Efrat is to grow to a city of 30,000 people, he said.

The settlement is situated in one of three settlement blocs Israel expects to hold on to in any final peace deal with the Palestinians.

Revivi said nine appeals, eight of which were rejected and one was upheld, had been filed by Palestinian landowners.

'Sticking point'

Al Jazeera's Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, West Bank, said the "confiscation [of the land], which by international law is deemed illegal, has been greeted with condemnation among Palestinian circles".

"We've seen statements from these leaderships describing this measure as condemnable, calling on the international community to take a firm stance," she said.

"... This will undoubtedly be a major sticking point when the US peace envoy George Mitchell visits the region towards the end of the month.

"This is what [the] Palestinians will be concentrating on. Already we've heard from the Palestinian president's office that there will be no negotiations until all settlement activities in the occupied West Bank including east Jerusalem stops."

Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has warned that continued settlement expansion would cripple peace talks.

His aides said recently that peace talks can only resume after a settlement freeze.

Expansion could also create friction with the US, as Mitchell, the US Middle East envoy, has long called on Israel to halt construction in settlements.

Nearly 290,000 Israelis currently live in West Bank settlements.

Israel is doing this for a long time, Abbas can not do anything at all. As long as the U.S. backing Israel , Israel will continue to do so. Israel Is takeing things by force. Israel must face the force in odrer fo it to back off.

Israelis are thieves and war mongers!
It seems as if Israel didn't learn a thing from the so called Holocaust... That's if there was one because I'm starting to doubt that since they're doing to the Palestinians worst than what they claim was done to them. They don't seem to get the notion that people will keep fighting for their lands, dignity and rights. To me, Israel doesn't want peace.

Isreal siezes west bank
It's no surprise at all that 9 out of 8 appeals by the palestinians were rejected. Jew's believe that they will rule the lands between the two river's,from the Nile to the uphraties river in iraq. So a handfull of protester's and appeals mean nothing to them. Let them satisfy their greed for now becaus they wont have it for long. The army of Mohamad(peace be upon him) is coming.

Apartheid Israel has U.S. backing
Israel will only come to the peace table and negotiate genuinely when it suffers a serious military setback. The Arab governments must understand that all history is made by force, NOT by begging for peace. Only force will return what was stolen by force. This is human nature unfortunately.

Abbas Should be feel ashamed of it...No body from the peace keeping champions Uno, europeon union, Usa , etc etc.. is speaking against the acts of Israil....... than how they think that terrorism will end........ By keeping silence we will not achieve any goal.....Only justice& Truth should be the rule of the day.........

Israel seizes West Bank land
Oded Revivi said nine appeals, eight of which were rejected and one was upheld, had been filed by Palestinian landowners. To know what were the nine appeals, why eight were rejected and why one was upheld would give more insight into this situation.

siezed land...
this land was seized long ago, just not built upon. It was part of what was taken in 1967... Do any of you know what is going on on the land owned by Jews in Muslim lands?

West bank land takeover
Israel unilaterally vacated Gaza in the hope of trading for peace. Instead they got 8000 rockets and mortar rounds. and were obliged to risk soldiers lives to stop the onslaught . So obviously the road to peace must be the opposite. There fore land take over. The more Israelis in the West Bank, the more security for Israel and the Palestinians living there.

Holocaust claims?
Any claim that Israel is commiting genocide to the Palestinians, is an utmost lie. Recently I visited Israel and the West Bank, and I saw no such life threatening hostility towards Palestinians. Visiting the settlers was a huge thing for me, but so was their desire for peace in Israel.
