Iran launches its first satellite

Iran has launched its first domestically built satellite.

The spacecraft, named Omid (Hope) - the first in a series that Iran plans to put into space by the end of next year - was lifted into orbit on a rocket on Tuesday.

"With this launch, the Islamic Republic of Iran has officially achieved a presence in space," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, said in broadcast remarks.

Omid will stay aloft for up to three months as part of a programme Iranian officials say is aimed at improving telecommunications and monitoring natural disasters.

Robert Wood, a US state department spokesman, voiced "great concern" at Iran's actions, saying that their satellite work could "possibly lead to the development of ballistic missiles".

Ahmadinejad has made scientific development, which often puts the country at odds with the West, a central theme of his presidency.

Nuclear fears

The satellite's launch demonstrates the development of technologies that many countries fear could one day be used to launch nuclear weapons. Iran insists it has no plans to do so.

The Iranian Fars state news agency said the satellite "has been designed for gathering information and for testing equipment ... [that] is going to help Iranian experts send an operational satellite into space".

It said the launch was "another achievement for Iranian scientists under sanctions".

Iran is under two rounds of UN sanctions due to its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, which the US and other Western nations fear could lead to the production of nuclear weapons.

Tehran says its nuclear ambitions are limited to generating electricity.

A satellite was put into orbit by Iran in 2005, but was carried by a Russian rocket.

Technological development
Iran's tecnological advances proove the fact that subservience to the West is not necessary for scientific progress. Inspite of USA and EU sanctions launch of this satellite in Iran was possible. Technological dependency from the West is the wrong strategic choice.

Iran launches its first satellite
I was wondering if someone could enlighten me (many have tried, few have succeeded haha) as to what Iran WOULD do with a nuclear weapon? According to all the watchdogs the use would be to use it against Israel, however, isn't the ultimate goal of the Muslim world to occupy Israel (Jerusalem)? A radioactive/leveled Israel (I would think) would probably be against their religion. thanks

O great! Now Iran can get ready for doomsday which their luney tunes president hopes for so they can get Mahdi out of the well! Next, the big one so they can blow up Israel and bring all hell loose to mankind, which is so asleep that all they can think about is global warming in the midst of global cooling.

Burning Sea Water As Fuel
Maybe you could spend less time broadcasting the age old problems between militant muslims and Israel and air a story about the greatest discovery that will change our planet. Sea water can be burned as fuel to power turbines and even automobiles. Practice what you preach !!
The US gets to have all the rockets it wants so why shouldn't other countries have them? I bet other countries are afraid of our rockets. We have shown the world that we will fire them at countries for no good reason. If Iran can't have them, then neither should we.

Iran in Space
Why does the US Government look for an excuse to demoralize Iran, when all that Iran is doing is advance her technology. There are other Nations who send rockets into space, why pick on Iran & perform an autopsy on her each time she breaths. Iran has not attacked any nation, the US is the one that helped Saddam into attacking Iran. Is it written Law anywhere that the US has to rule the World & Heavens? USA lets start making Peace than Creating Wars around the World.
