Five Jordanian police officers are to go on trial in connection with the death of a man, who died of injuries allegedly sustained while in custody.

Nabil Sharif, the minister of state for information affairs and communication, confirmed that the investigation into the incident had been concluded on Tuesday and that the case had now been referred to the courts.

Saddam Saud, 20, died on Sunday having been taken into custody last month by police following a quarrel in a commercial centre in the capital, Amman.

Saud's relatives claim that he was tortured by police.

Saud was buried on Monday amid street protests by his relatives and supporters in an eastern suburb of the capital.

At least six policemen were injured in the clashes, and tear gas was used to break up the crowd which had set cars alight and damaged shops, police said.

Saud had been declared "clinically dead" last month and had been receiving hospital treatment until his death two days ago.
