Watch part two
Orangutans can only be found in the wild in Sumatra and Borneo.
But their natural habitat is fast disappearing – destroyed by illegal logging and palm oil plantations.
Now orangutans face extinction.
One sanctuary in central Kalimantan, Indonesia is trying to rescue the apes – taking in injured or orphan orangutans in the hope of rehabilitating them back into the wild.
But if the rate of deforestation continues, there soon may be no forests to release them into.
On this edition of 101 East, we ask – will Asia's native orangutans be sacrificed for economic progress.
This episode of 101 East aired from Thursday, October 2, 2008.
