China food safety

Watch part two

Six babies are dead and 300,000 more are suffering health problems in China, all because they drank milk.

Last September, China admitted that nearly two dozen manufacturers of infant milk formula had been padding their product with an industrial chemical, melamine.

It was just the latest incident in a string of Chinese food safety scandals. Poisonous toothpaste, toxic seafood, and insecticide-laced dumplings have all caused scares across the world.

This week, 101 East looks at how China's melamine scandal has shaken consumer confidence across the world and asks if the label 'Made in China' really means – 'Buyer Beware'.

This episode of 101 East aired from Thursday, December 11, 2008.
