101 EAST
Philippines: Keeping the peace

Watch part two

The Philippines has over two million firearms, half of them illegal. Over one million unlicensed firearms are in the hands of civilians and rebels, leading to the highest rate of gun-related homicides in Asia.

Tackling this entrenched gun culture is the Philippines National Police (PNP).

The PNP's motto is to serve and protect, but with reports about rampant corruption and abuse of power, many Filipinos have lost faith in their force.

The PNP recently came under the spotlight for a spate of controversial shoot-outs that left suspected criminals and civilians dead.

In this edition of 101 East, we ask if the Philippines National Police has taken on the role of judge, jury and executioner, all in the name of keeping the peace.

This episode of 101 East aired from Thursday, June 11, 2009.
