101 EAST
The legacy of Tiananmen Square

Watch part two

The events of June 4, 1989 in Beijing's Tiananmen Square remain deeply sensitive in China.

Twenty years on, the protests in the square and the subsequent crackdown are rarely mentioned in state media and foreign internet sites that mention them are often barred.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of unarmed students and Beijing residents died when Deng Xiaoping and other party leaders ordered Chinese troops and police to clear demonstrators from the square.

Two decades after the crackdown at Tiananmen Square, 101 East looks at the impact the protests have had on China today.

This episode of 101 East aired from Thursday, June 4, 2009.
