China's Uighur dilemma

Watch part two

The ancient city of Kashgar lies on the edge of western China, providing relief to travellers of the Silk Road for over 2,000 years.

Now, the Chinese government is bringing in the bulldozers.

They say Kashgar's buildings are vulnerable to earthquakes and are demolishing up to 85 per cent of the old city and relocating its residents.

But some observers question whether the demolition is being done for the safety of Kashgar's people, or to secure the region against potential separatist movements and terrorism.

In this edition of 101 East we ask, what is the future of the ancient Uighur city of Kashgar?

This episode of 101 East airs from Thursday, October 8, 2009 at the following times GMT: Thursday: 1230; Friday: 0300; Saturday: 0530, 1730; Sunday: 0330, 1130; Monday: 1630; Tuesday: 1430; Wednesday: 0830, 1930; Thursday: 0630.
