In its first heyday a hundred years ago Detroit epistomised the dream of a powerful industrial society.
Workers from the rural south became an urban working class, then a rising middle class.
Detroit's auto industry gave birth to the assembly line, the crucible of modern industrial capitalism.
However with the current plight of the auto-industry that plays such a crucial role in the city's economy Detroit no longer has any option but to make the transition from an industrial society to a post-industrial one.
Amidst all the problems Fault Lines discovers there is also something fiercely alive in Detroit – a spirit of resilience and resistance and, maybe, glimpses of a more sustainable future.
The second episode of Fault Lines can be seen from Thursday, May 14, at the following times GMT: Thursday: 0600, 1630; Friday: 0130, 0830; Saturday: 1130, 2230; Sunday: 0630, 2030; Monday: 1430; Tuesday: 1230, 1930; Wednesday: 0300.
