America and its Wars on Terror

As the US-led "War on Terror" has moved towards an attritional conflict with groups perceived as extremist, Al Jazeera investigates the full implications of this war as it affects the politics and people of the world.

In 2007, America's military spending was higher than at any time since the Second World War but terrorist attacks around the world have increased every year since 2001.

We visit Iraq and Afghanistan, sites of the most prolific terrorist incidents to investigate the human cost of the "War on Terror" as it is played out across ordinary peoples' lives.

With Iraq and Afghanistan enduring as the war's primary focus, we go to Somalia to uncover what some regard as the unofficial third front of the so-called war on terror.

As US-backed Ethiopian forces engage in gun battles with divergent bands of militia intent on resistance, we analyse how this violence and unrest has become a microcosm of the wider war and try to glean what lessons can be learned from the fighting in East Africa.

Al Jazeera's senior political analyst Marwan Bishara is joined by leading analysts as well as the former US commander of Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

America and its War on Terror
It is amazing how these reporters sit in New York and criticize the US war on terror. I’ll bet they are enjoying American Free Speech. Try speaking like this from Afghanistan during the Taliban rule, or sit in Bagdad and speak this way about Sad am Hussein’s reign. Many Americans died to allow this free speech and you want these freedoms without any of the sacrifices.

War on Terror
More and more americans in the US should be urged to access the news and images aired by Aljazeera. There's a need for a change in the american mindset and I think that aljazeera can be an important platform for that. It is the "Land of the Free", istn't it? So why deliberately keep the nation away from seeing the other side of the coin?

@adam pt.1
adam, although you are an american, at least try to be rational and logical. your point is completely irrelevant, no one is arguing that there is a lack of freedom of speech in the US as compared to other countries.

rather, their condition is much worse. so it seems that your domestic freedom of speech is not at all helping the situation of those people you are occupying. on top of this, it isn't even helping you elect a legitimate leader of your country!

War on Terror Series
These images, statistics and opinions are things you never see on United States news. I love this kind of coverage that we do not see and we should see.

war on terror
I am constantly amazed by the quality of Al Jazeera's journalism. Thank you so much for filling in the incredible void in the truth that has been left to gape open by American and Canadian mainstream journalism. Thanks for not adopting the US propogandic lexicon, for asking the hard and obvious questions and for perservering in a quest for the truth. True journalism in its highest form. All my respect, Chris

@adam pt.2
that is a matter of domestic policy, whereas this series deals with foreign policy. on the other hand, going along your line of thinking, afghanistan and iraq were no less free under the taliban and hussein as they are now under US occupation.

War on Terror?
Adam. I see you are a little out of touch. Since the US appears to have declared war on anyone with different views, continues to either attack or invade several nations with no apparent reason ie Somalia and imposes the 'Homeland Security Act' the USA has dropped to about 47 in the world re Civil Liberties. That is equal place with such nations as Bulgaria, Romania and Namibia and behind Poland, Estonia and Botswana- see Economist Intelligence Unit Democracy Index. What's happening?

So called war on terror
Please stop calling the show Americas war on teror as they are spreading teror rather then destroy it! They just want to grab the resources of the weaker countries and eliminate muslims! Give this message to all the Americans who see it!
