Iran election recount

The outcome of recent elections in Iran has angered supporters of opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, with thousands of people taking to the streets to demand a recount.

Protesters expressing their anger and dismay at the result were met by a clampdown by Iranian security forces that resulted in the death of at least seven demonstrators.

In response to the turmoil, the powerful Guardian Council - Iran's highest legislative body - has said it will to order a recount of votes cast in the country's disputed presidential election if it finds irregularities.

Can the Guardian Council bring the country back together? If the vote recount goes ahead, will Mousavi's supporters accept the new result?

Inside Story discusses the issue with guests Anoush Ehteshami, dean of Internationalisation in the School of Government and International Affairs at the Centre for Iranian Studies, Syed Mohamed Marandi, head of American Studies at Tehran University and Scott Lucas, professor of American Studies at Birmingham University and editor of EnduringAmerica.com.

This episode of Inside Story aired from Tuesday, June 16, 2009.
