What do Iran's reformists want?

Anger and deadly violence is escalating on the streets of Tehran despite warnings from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader.

At least ten people were killed over the weekend. That brings the total to at least 30 since the announcement that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the incumbent, had been re-elected president over a week ago.

Protesters have been clashing with police at rallies in support of Mir Hossain Mousavi, an opposition candidate. The protesters claim Mousavi was cheated out of the presidency and are demanding the annulment of the election results.

Both pro-reform and pro-Ahmedinejad supporters demonstrated in the wake of the results.

But as the protests continue, Inside Story asks: Just what do the reformists want, what will become of their movement and can they shake the foundations of the Islamic revolution?

Presenter Lauren Taylor is joined by Mehrdad Khonsari, a former Iranian diplomat and senior consultant to the Centre for Arab and Iranian Studies; Ali Granmayeh, a former Iranian diplomat and senior research fellow at the London Middle East Institute; and Kenneth Katzman, a specialist in Gulf affairs for the Congressional Research Service.

This episode of Inside Story aired on Sunday, June 21, 2009.
