Programmes LISTENING POST
Covering al-Bashir's indictment

Watch part two

On The Listening Post this week; the reporting of the International Criminal Court's indictment of Omar al-Bashir, the Sudanese president, plus World of Warcraft, an online gaming phenomenon.

This week in the News Divide: The International Criminal Court recently issued an arrest warrant for Omar al-Bashir, Sudan's president, for war crimes and crimes against humanity. It is the first time the ICC has issued this kind of warrant for a sitting head of state or head of government.

Since 2003 more than 200,000 people have been killed in the Darfur conflict and another 3 million have been displaced. But the ICC's charges against al-Bashir have many in the media, particularly in the Arab world, talking about the apparent double standard.

To them, the court has one set of rules for an African/Arab leader, and another set for Western politicians. We take a look at the arrest warrant and the Sudanese government's media counter-offensive.

In part two, The Listening Post's Sam Sapin looks at World of Warcraft, a popular online game that claims to have more than 11 million registered players. But like many addictions, there may be a health risk involved. Our feature will assess the new media phenomenon, its real world implications, and the steps being taken to deal with this manifestation of online addiction.

In this week's Newsbytes: Youtube is banned in Bangladesh; The Zimbabwean journalist, Jestina Mukoko, is released; Muntadher al-Zaidi gets three years in prison for throwing his shoes at George Bush; Hillary Clinton's crusade for the release of Iranian journalist Roxana Saberi; and Sky News appoints its first Twitter correspondent.

Finally,
our internet video of the week is a satirical video created from the team at The Onion featuring a mock release of the sequel to World of Warcraft, "World of World of Warcraft", which allows you to play the original game vicariously through new characters playing the original game.

This episode of The Listening Post aired from Friday, March 13, 2009.
