Mira Nair

in street theatre while studying at Delhi University
This week on One on One, meet the cutting-edge movie director, Mira Nair. There are few women in the film business willing to push the limits as much as this Indian director based in the US.

By tackling taboo issues from inter-racial relationships and the candid lives of strippers, she has made a name for herself as a dynamic filmmaker.

Born in Orissa, into a middle-class family, Mira Nair's studies took her across India but it was not until she got to Delhi University that she became involved in political street theatre.

A scholarship took her to Harvard at the age of 19, where she met, not only her first husband, but also writer, Sooni Taraporevala - her long time collaborator in films.

Awards and recognition came thick and fast with films such as 1988's groundbreaking Salaam Bombay and Mississippi Masala in 1991.

Ten years later, Monsoon Wedding reminded audiences that Nair knows how to effectively bridge cinema for the East and West.

The director is based out of New York, but has adopted Kenya as a second home and continues to make uncompromising films in the spirit of her strong and very independent character.

This episode of One on One airs from Saturday, June 28, 2008
